History

Established in 1870.

The Ladies’ Floral Club of Austin began the library in 1870 with 231 books and a willingness to use their own homes, turn by turn, as libraries. In 1884, the collection moved to the basement of the newly built courthouse (now demolished). A Carnegie library opened in 1904, was remodeled and expanded several times, but finally demolished when the current new building at 323 4th Ave NE was built in 1996.
