History

Established in 1939.

Fitzsimons has a long and storied history in Colorado. A frequent favorite of former President Eisenhower in the 1950’s, Fitzsimons became an Aurora public golf course in 1998. This tree lined golf gem is now an attractive cornerstone to a new bioscience park, some of the state’s leading hospitals and a thriving medical community. The rebuilt and redesigned holes on the front nine, done by Richard Phelps in 2004, are a great complement to the old-time layout and strong traditions at Fitzsimons.

They expect you to golf a 3 hour round. This course has nothing to do with enjoying the game, and everything to do with annoying its patrons. Zero tax dollars should be given to this course, and its entire golf staff (not food and beverage: they were great) should be fired. This course seems to have a lot of heritage, but I promise you is absolutely nothing to brag about in the modern era. The once great dynasty has fallen, and the smoldering remains are total garbage.

Played here on Saturday because it was all we could find. We were not expecting much and were pleasantly surprised by the conditions of the course. Greens were true, sand was well manicured and the fairways were free of weeds. While the course was not particularly challenging, it was enjoyable because we had young golfer just learning the game with us. He was able to make a couple of par’s and keep up the pace of play.
Another pleasant surprise was the pace of play. We played on a Sat morning and finished a round in 4+15, walking!

I tried to register my son of their junior golf camp. It was very disorganized. I had to call several times and kept being told to try back to talk to the right person. When I finally did talk to the right person they told me they cancelled the camp because they only had a few people pay and register (which must be done only by check in-person); they moved all of those registrants to the next camp, a month out, which now only has one spot open, but we cannot make that one.
Now, if you are halfway bright you can probably put together that had they been more organized or accepted online registration the first camp could have probably had enough people. I just got my recreation guide and tried calling several times to register. I am likely not the only person. Oh well, they seemed pretty rude so I guess it’s a good thing they won’t be working with my kids.

The course is fun, grass driving range is cool (when it’s not winter). The employees are really nice, down to earth. My favorite is the little diner at the clubhouse. The food is great and the ladies that run the joint are delightful characters.

The round was fun, but not much of a challenge. If you are a 12 handicap or less don’t waste your day. Spend a little more money and challenge yourself. The staff was very rude and grumpy, but its a bunch of old men so I almost expected it.

Not a fan. Course is in bad shape, holes aren’t that different from each other, and not very challenging. 8^th hole is stupid. 485 yard Par 5 that any 10 handicap or better could reach in 2, but to keep that from happening, they put OB stakes 20 yards right of the fairway, and this «OB» is just the 13^th fairway. Then they put a random pond right in front of the green to make people not go for it. If you have to do all that to make a hole challenging then the course overall can’t be that impressive, and it’s not.

I really enjoy this course for a number of reasons:
1. It never seems to be particularly crowded
2. Very affordable — 18 holes with a care is around $ 40 bucks
3. Very friendly staff
The course itself was apparently a favorite of President Eisenhower’s, and the layout favors those golfers who slice (or fade). I’m not that guy, so it’s a bit more challenging for those of us with a consistent snap-hook.
There is some water, but not much. Be sure to look for «Ike’s Tree» smack in the middle of one of the par 4’s (It’s got a sign on it for your convenience).
This used to be an old military course, and while it is now open to the general public, it sits amongst old military style housing. An added bit of fun for us veterans…
