Mom and I partook of a rain-barrel class given by the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper today. I strongly urge you to take the class even if you don’t go home with a rain-barrel. Bonny will make sure you go home informed about water wars, and our area’s water conservation issues. As a result, we will be installing four or five rain-barrels for use on our home.

Our beautiful Chattahoochee has been a big part of my life. I’ve fished on it in many places, canoed on it, swam in it, and, yes, even participated in the infamous Ramblin’ Raft Race of the 70’s. I’ve bathed in, cooked with, and drank its water all my life. I have also become increasingly concerned with its safety and quality as the Atlanta population has ballooned. After all, it’s just an itty bitty river compared to other cities’ water sources. This is why I applaude Sally Bethea and her Riverkeeper staff’s efforts to educate, inform, and rally people to the cause of protecting our Chattahoochee and its basin. They have several excellent public participation events a year, and their website is worth a visit to see how you can learn or, better, get involved. Our water supply and ecosystem’s health is too important to leave alone in the hands of politicians, developers, and lawyers.
