The Jimmy Carter Library & Museum

This was an incredible experience and is probably my favorite place that I visited in Atlanta. It’s not great for kids as it requires a lot of reading and appreciation for history. But wow, is Jimmy Carter a great guy, great American, and great asset to Georgia. At the time of this writing Jimmy is still alive and you can visit him in Plains, GA.
You enter through the gift shop for $ 8 per person and wander around the exhibits. There is a short movie about the Carters which is worth watching, if only to remind you about how awesome this couple is. The exhibits are some of the best I’ve seen, anywhere – interactive, fun, nostalgic, informative, and in some cases really technologically cool.
The Carters have made a profound impact on every person in the world. They are great role models and this is a fantastic way to learn about them. I would recommend this to anyone.
Note that the cafeteria was closed on the weekend (maybe check ahead) and there is a beautiful park area around the complex. Plenty of parking.

Ok so I have been to the Reagan library and saw Air Foce 1. I went to the Nixon library and saw Marine 1 (helicopter). Here at the Carter library all I saw was Golf Cart 1. It was very nice and low key kinda like his presidency. He was a good man and a simple man. So was his library. The exhibit was nice. Brought back many memories of a time gone by. Well worth visiting. They say he still visits and you can chat with him.

The lack of signs to get here will drive you crazy. I later learned that they took down some signs due to vandalism… but still, you need to get ‘em back up or find a work around for the customer.
Overall, pretty underwhelming of all the POTUS museums I’ve been to so far. There wasn’t even anything I wanted to buy in the gift shop. And I’m a sucker for good souvenir junk!
Maybe that’s the best the curators could do on exhibiting a peanut farmer from Plains, GA that had a mediocre one term?

One of the only sightseeing stop I did in Atlanta, besides the ATL airport, was here at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and museum. I probably couldn’t locate any other cool things to see in Atlanta that I was interested in, so my friend and I chose to come here instead.
It was a Monday afternoon and we spent at most an hour or so here, browsing the exhibits and the archives that were the primary focus of President Jimmy Carter’s life, both in and out of the White House. The most profound impact that he had on the world seemed to be when he left the White House and decided to be the ambassador to peace. It was an interesting life Jimmy Carter had lead, growing up in rural Georgia and facing segregation in the 1950’s, and the eventual presidency in the 1970’s. The exhibition was quite extensive and I got to see it for free, since my friend had an annual pass and I just happened to tag along. The building is usually quiet, as it is a museum, which included a small theater and it played a short film of the former president’s life.
The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and museum is located at 441 Freedom Way here in Atlanta. I’m sure that they charge admission fee here, but I got in through a friend’s annual pass for free, so I would assume it was like $ 10 or something like that. There is a small gift shop near the entrance and I was surprised that there was no security check. Just walk on in and present yourself at the gift shop for admission checks. However, there were security personnel patrolling the facility, so that was good. They accept credit cards in the gift shop, so that’s a good plus. There are some nifty gift ideas for those who want a souvenir of their visit. I saw the short film of president Jimmy Carter’s life from his childhood till his presidency, and some bits after he left the White House. It gives an unique appreciation for what he contributed to our American society and way of life back in the 1970’s. I wasn’t even born yet!
For me, it was a way to remember how it was like back in then. How America endured in the 1960’s and emerged into the country we have today. It gives me a greater admiration for the political process that makes America great and the trials and tribulations we — as a nation — go through to get there. America isn’t perfect by any means, but we are one of the closest ones. My favorite exhibits in the museum is possibly the Nobel Peace Prize that was displayed, as well as the thick us passports that president and Mrs. Carter had during their presidency and afterwards. It was kind of mind blowing that their passports are super thick, but as a us diplomat, it’s very necessary to do so. I kind of enjoyed the work that Jimmy Carter has done in the 3^rd world countries, where I had seen the Guinea worms display and that just didn’t seem right when the drinking water is far from normal and worms can be grown in humans due to bad water.
For what it’s worth, the Jimmy Carter presidential library and museum is worth a good morning stroll, if you are in the Atlanta metro area. The area is beautiful, along with a small rose garden within the complex. Do yourself a favor and come here and empower yourself with some knowledge of america’s past. It’ll give you more appreciation of what it feels like to be an American.

It was only $ 8 a person and kids 16 and under free. I wish they had more actual artifacts but it was informative. My 11 year old loved the Oval Office replica and the interactive computer passport system that taught him about what the Carter center foundation does world wide.

Really educational and great to learn the acclomplishments of President jimmy carter.

Pay respect to Jimmy and Rosalyn. Emulate them… they TRIED and still TRY to help people and bring them together. Great Americans. Great education on 1976 – 1980. The problems of today are no different! Worth the trip; 2 hours and you see it all.
The President and First Lady show the value of trying to help… you may not have all the answers but you must try!

We went here mostly because it was close to our hotel, and when you are within walking distance of a history lesson with your teenager, you have no excuses. It was a very well laid out hotel. I wasn’t born when Jimmy Carter was president, so my knowledge was limited to my parents and grandparents comments in passing and the blurbs in the history books. There were many accomplishments I’d forgotten all about and humanitarian efforts of he and his wife that I was never aware of. All in all, it was a good use of our time. It’s free for kids under 17, so it’s an affordable family outing.

The main reason for my recent visit to Atlanta was to visit the Carter Presidential Museum. Really was not sure what to expect as this was the first Presidential Museum that I have been to (and Carter was president when I was born– so not too familiar what happened during his presidency). The grounds were laid out nicely, as there is walking trails nearby, and looks like they were also having a farmers market when we visited. Not only is the museum there, but so is the research center Carter had thought of when he was still in office (believe this came before the museum.
There was pretty extensive details on Carters early life, Naval Career, starting out in politics, and rising up to President. There was a film on a day in the life of Carter when he was still in office, his furniture from the Oval Office, and his accomplishments during and mostly after his presidency.
I am not sure how his museum compares to the other museums of the former presidents (I believe they go back to Hoover). I know they are spread over the course of the United States, but if you know you are going to be visiting more than one during the course of year (as my parents did), you can buy a pass for a year that gets you into all museums (as well as one adult guest). Prices do vary between museums (from what my mom told me). Not sure exactly of the price of this museum (as I got in free), but believe adults are around $ 6.

Not a fan of James Earl, but we’ve visited other Presidential Libraries and thought, what the heck, we’re here anyway. Obviously you are presented with the slanted view of how he saved the world, but it did provide a better insight into his upbringing and his motivation. Best part of Carter was that he gave us Reagan.

I remember Jimmy Carter’s presidency — or at least I thought I did. The Presidential library and museum reminded me just how much happened during the four years of Carter’s term — how much was accomplished and how much the nation changed in that relatively brief time.
There’s a certain amount of «putting the best face on it,» of course, but overall I had to admire the honesty of the exhibits. The Iran hostage crisis and struggles with economic inflation which contributed to his defeat at the polls in 1980 get due treatment. But so do the Camp David negotiations that normalized relations between Egypt and Israel, the revised treaty for the Panama Canal, and the nation’s recovery from the Watergate scandal.
The Museum also covers the Carters’ — Jimmy’s and Rosalynn’s — extraordinary activity after leaving office: the peace work of the Carter Center, the home-​building of Habitat for Humanity, and the mental health leadership. The couple’s twin Medals of Freedom take a well-​earned and honored place.
I’m really glad I visited.

I think museums are the best way to learn about history, and Presidential museums are an engaging way to learn about American history. The roots of today’s Al-​Qaeda can be traced back to some missteps in the Carter Administration policies in Afghanistan and Iran, but Carter came the closest to peace in the Middle East of any of the Presidents after the formation of Israel. Atlanta is such an interesting city to visit, I think this museum is the best, most interesting site. Unlike the other Presidential museums I’ve visited, I think this one focuses most on the President’s life (as opposed to his political legacy as the primary focus), and this is a good museum strategy as Carter’s life is so interesting.

This is a nice thought about a mile and a half from the MLK site. D Carter museum is expansive it covers his life his presidency and also human rights. There is a lot to read and see. I when I came not expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised the ground around the library pretty the museum itself is well laid out with an interpretive film at first and then a lot of interpretive display.
Definitely worth the trip if you like 70 s history. Glory in the end of the Vietnam War and energy crisis.

When I found out the my business trip was going to take me through Atlanta, I knew I had to check out President Library #9. Military admission — $ 6, cool. Lots of free parking. There’s a short little orientation film, then the exhibits. The most interesting thing about the Carter library is the focus on what happened prior to being President and what has happened afterwards. As our longest lived former President, it is long and extensive. A great little addition to my Atlanta weekend!

What a spectacular hidden gem in Atlanta.
I went for the first time this weekend with some of my history buff friends. Expecting to be kind of bored, I found myself really engaged and interested in all of the different exhibits and videos.
The museum entrance and exit is located in the gift shop and makes a convenient loop around the facility. It does cost a nominal fee, but it’s only $ 8 and there are discounts for students and military which cost $ 6.
Upon beginning there is a short film about Carter, who he was, and where he came from. It features both him and his wife Rosalynn as they make their way from the navy to peanut country, and eventually to the capital. The film is less than 10 minutes long and definitely worth the watch.
Upon exiting the theater you are able to walk through a timeline of Carter’s life, from his humble beginnings to his charity work after the Oval Office years. There are great archive features, recreations, videos, and interactive maps. It has enough variety to keep the pace while still presenting history as it was made and gems from the past.
Great way to spend an afternoon — plus the location lets you walk around the beautiful Inman Park area and grab a snack or lunch while you’re there! It makes for an affordable, fun date.

On a recent drive from California to Georgia I found myself at the Carter Museum and Library. Being a fan of specialty museums (and presidential museums are definitely a niche type) I was very pleased with this stop. To review the timeline of the Carter administration and recall the integrity of this son of a peanut farmer from Georgia was indeed a wonderful trip down memory lane. President Carter held to his ideals and it shows in the way he handled the events that occurred during his tenure. The videos on the handling of the Arab Israeli negotiations was a stellar remembrance of his people skills.
Adding the humanitarian challenges that Jimmy and Rosalyn have dealt with following the white house are indeed making the world a better place for all of us.
Congratulations to our former President, a true world class citizen and the museum really reminds us all. Thanks

This was my first Presidential Library visit. There is a lot of history. But most notably is many other things that Carter did after leaving office.
It is amazing how much time, effort and dedication that he has in his philanthropic work.
I enjoyed the Oval Office replica. Also the small display of other presidential museums and libraries across the nation provides possible other places to visit.
Finally, very informative of how much time the US-​China relationship occupied during his tenure.

The first of these presidential library/​museums I’ve been to, this is a beautiful site on some beautiful grounds.
The museum does a great job of telling President Carter’s story, from his upbringing to his years as governor then president and on to his current status as a globe-​trotting defender of the less fortunate. Although the museum glosses over what many perceive as his failures as a president, the issues aren’t tucked under the rug, which is good.
The $ 7 entry is quite reasonable and their are some great interactive features and an absolute wealth of items from Carter’s presidency.
This was a great first experience, especially seeing the replica of his office during his tenure.

As a supporter of GreenLaw, a non-​profit environmental legal foundation, I was pleased to be invited to a reception and a talk given by former VP Al Gore, who has a new book coing out (I got a free signed copy).
The talk was inspiring, but this review has more to do with the library itself. I’d been there a number of times to see the permanent presidential exhibit plus various special exhibits and at least one other talk. Every time, I’ve come away thinking we are so fortunate to have the Carter library in Atlanta. Very nice exhibit spaces, and a well-​designed speaker’s auditorium. Comfy seats, good acoustics. Plus, easy access and parking. I’m a fan.
