Dear Matty Cakes: As bad as the economy has been lately, my wife and I want to support local businesses when and where possible. Our recent experience with you has left us unable to patronize your bakery. I’d not read any reviews of your shop before coming in, but seeing them now, I understand the lower rated ones based on customer service. Sounds like it’s very hit-or-miss. When your staff(and even you, Matt) act like you just don’t care whether we bring our business to you, then you can’t be surprised when people go elsewhere. We needed a simple cake done. 2 weeks notice for the equivalent of a sheet cake? With two employees standing around? Sure, it wasn’t a $ 1000 cake or something that’s going to get you on the Food Network, but come on, not every job is TV worthy, right? You don’t have a look book, or any examples we could see at your shop? I know you do some really cool specialty cakes but word of mouth only travels so far, and the price we were quoted changed depending on which of your employees we spoke with. Anyway, I digress… our experience was less than stellar. If you notice business isn’t booming, or if you feel like traffic in and out of your shop has plateaued, then you may want to look at your staff and the employees that represent your business. After all, anyone can make a great cake, cupcake or dessert. It’s that special thing called customer service that makes an average business truly great. Right now, my friend, to say it’s lacking is an understatement. I wish you luck, Matty Cakes. We’ll take our business elsewhere.

I sincerely wanted to like this place and support them because I frequent the Cheshire Bridge neighborhood a lot and would really have liked that independent bakery to thrive. First off: the service. The person who answers phones(feminine sounding, ebonics speaking individual) should really be removed from that post. They were consistently rude and unhelpful. The first time I called to place a cake order upwards past +$ 100 two weeks in advance, this rude person tells me that they’re too busy and are all booked up. This should have been my first cue to take my business elsewhere but I needed the cake pickup to be conveniently in that neighborhood for a party on a specific day and didn’t want to haul a large cake around town. But anyhoo — two weeks advance notice and they’re booked!!! yeah right. It rather sounded like the phone guy didn’t want to be bothered. Besides, I had already sent in my order via email and got a call back from somebody higher up the food chain one week later inquiring about my order and also informing me that they were just then taking orders for the week — confirming that the receptionist lied about them being booked. The cake itself was decorated fine but the taste was pretty awful. I had a party guest comment that«the cake tastes like plastic». Perhaps I should not have ordered outside of the cupcakes menu that everyone else seems to rave about. Even till the day of pickup, the service did not improve. One would think that a customer who just dropped $ 150 of business and bringing a cake to a party of 80 would have a lot to say about the cake in either praise or disgust. They really could have improved my experience. Bleh.

I really enjoyed the cupcakes here. I tried the chocolate with chocolate cream cheese frosting, and the chocolate with nutella. I couldn’t taste the nutella whatsoever, and it was slightly sweeter than the cream cheese one, but both were delish! I didn’t find the cupcakes too dry at all… The cream cheese frosting was heaven! Only minus 0.5 star for the hugeness. No one needs to eat a cupcake that big, even if it’s worth the price! It took me nearly 3 days to finish… Also minus 0.5 for having way too much frosting. I rarely eat a cupcake with a fork, but this one needed some surgery. It was much better when I removed some of the frosting and evened it out with the cake. I was on my way to Highland for a cupcake when I passed by this place and decided to check it out. And I definitely would again!

Been here twice cupcakes are really good! Each time I got a variety of what they had available. Not much of a selection on hand. The staff is a little slow and uninterested and they do not look you in the eye or talk loud enough to be heard. But I love the cakes so I’ll be back. Plus the location is convenient!

I had read reviews of Matty Cakes and walked by it numerous times(seemingly always on a Monday, when they are closed), so I’d been wanting to try them for a while and add another notch on my cupcake bedpost. I had borrowed my Mom’s car one Wednesday morning and made a snap decision to turn around on Piedmont and give ‘em a go. I almost wished I had walked because parking is *tight*. I walked in and can’t say the staff seemed terribly interested in the fact that I was there, or really wanted to «talk cupcakes». I got the red velvet cupcake and, while it was reasonably priced and the size of my head, I can’t say it was very good. the cream cheese frosting didn’t really taste like cream cheese, and the cake part tasted strangely like corn bread. Now, I enjoy cornbread so this was not an entirely disagreeable thing, but I was expecting red velvet cake, not red velvet cornbread. On a positive note, I did accidentally drop my cupcake in its to-go container on the concrete floor of my parking garage and it held up well. My MAIN issue though is they have their cupcakes in a refrigerated display case. *Nothing* dries out and renders a cupcake inedible faster than that. So, once again, the perfect Atlanta cupcake eludes me…

Hello Unilocal. My name is Cindy and I have a problem. You see, it all started with some random Unilocaling I was doing one day when the work day was getting a bit slow(I’m allowed to do this. One of the perks of a salon job. Suck it corporate business!). I don’t know what sparked my search for a good cupcake place. I’m not particularly fond of sweets. Give me some fresh fruits or something insanely sour and I’m a happy girl. But, alas I stumbled or more like heavenly sent to Matty Cakes. The bakery is very open space and quaint. You might see the cupcakes being decorated as you make your order. The owner has always been there every time I’ve stopped by. Not the most talkative or approachable person. Most I’ve gotten from him is a ‘hi.’ The workers are usually friendly. Now the CAKES. The one damn reason I don’t mind going out of the way from my usual commute with gas being over $ 2.50. I love Matty Cakes for making deliciously moist cupcakes that aren’t sickeningly sweet. I never feel like guzzling water after two bites from sugar overload. Heck, these are the only cupcakes where I finish the whole thing, frosting and all(oink oink!). The jumbo cakes are 3x the size of a regular cupcake and only $ 2.95, which doesn’t leave me feeling jipped(Hey, I’m looking at you Atlanta Cupcake Factory!). I always get the red velvet. It has an amazing slightly sweet cream cheese frosting that I salivate over and crushed pecans sprinkled on top. Great flavor and so damn moist! Now, let’s talk about the double chocolate cupcake. All chocolate-loving women should have this. It’s a freaking sin in cupcake form. So rich with this awesome dark chocolate frosting. And you even get a surprise in the center of white chocolate ganache, YUM! It’s like diving into a pot of gold and finding diamonds in the center! Don’t think I’m biased with my love for Matty Cakes. I’m not particularly fond of the carrot cake. It’s the one cupcake that tasted kinda bland and pretty dry to me. That aside, I can’t wait to venture into the other flavors if I ever get tired of my favorites. Now I lust for the day I can make the drive down here before it closes to nestle one of those jumbo deliciousness into my mouth. You better believe I schedule my visits.

In the last few years, Atlanta has jumped onto the cupcake bandwagon that popped up a while ago. I never really understood what the big deal was with this surge in popularity of cupcakes, but I figured that places started making some special, unique cupcakes that far surpass what I ate at birthday parties when I was 7. A little while back I was driving by this place and figured I’d stop in and see what this cupcake renaissance was all about. They had a variety of types and I chose the 2 that were recommended to me by the staff: tiramisu and red velvet. I was slightly taken aback when I was told it was six dollars and thirtysomething cents for 2 cupcakes, but I figured that the cupcakes were rather large so maybe it’s a fair price. Quantity doesn’t matter much to me though if the quality is not there though — and it wasn’t. These cupcakes were just not good! Both of the cupcakes were surprisingly very dry and the flavors were average(red velvet) and bad(tiramisu). And these 2 should have been the best since they were the recommended ones! Very disappointing. I can get much tastier, cheaper cupcakes from Publix or by making them out of a box — dead serious. Sad, but true. I hope this place is just an anomaly in the world of Atlanta cupcakes but I am questioning this cupcake hype even more now. I have just addressed the cupcakes, but haven’t had anything else from this place(cakes, pastries, cookies, sandwiches). I looked on their website and they have an amazing looking dulce de leche cheesecake that’s available by the slice so I decided to give them one more shot before posting my review. I stopped by to get a slice of the cheesecake mentioned above. They did not have it and tried offering me something else. I walked out. My conscience is clear. 1

I had a rough day yesterday, so today I decided I needed to try a fancy cupcakery I’d never visited before. The woman who served me was really, really nice. She wasn’t an ultra-cheerful personality type, but she didn’t look at me funny when I noticed the standing Hobart mixer and announced, «That’s a really big mixer.» She smiled and told me that it was an 80-quart mixer. We had a nice little conversation and then I left with my cupcakes. I got a red velvet cupcake and an old fashioned chocolate one. They were, um, huge. And I think they were only $ 3 or so each. Compared to other gourmet cupcakes, that’s actually pretty cheap. I haven’t tried the chocolate one yet, but the red velvet was YUM. Very tasty cream cheese frosting, very moist cake with the perfect texture. It’s very hard to get the right texture in a red velvet cake – most people don’t manage it and a lot don’t even come close. I will definitely be returning to Matty Cakes in the future.

Cupcakes folks — I am not sure what the other reviewers are talking about, but I loved the website and fell in love with this place from graphics. I had a big birthday planned for my partner, decorated suite at the Midtown W, presents, dinner and a cake. Folks — Fondent, the hard stuff on top, is edible, but really not meant to be. The cake was dry, just like the attitude of the dude wearing the odd shorts and clogs with the bald head. Customer service! Hello. I would have choked down a piece of the cake if they had been a little nicer with my American Express card. A thank you. These hip places are going to have to actually produce a good product to stay alive. What is the big deal about this place -?

For some strange reason I woke up the other day CRAVING something sweet. Cupcakes were the first thing that came to mind, but since it was almost lunchtime I thought that it might be a better idea to eat something that wasn’t exclusively dessert(although I’m not too good to make a meal out of sweets). Sitting in my house I couldn’t think of what I wanted to eat, so I decided to drive. While cruising down Piedmont I looked up and saw a sign(in this case, it was literally a sign for Matty Cakes). I stopped in and ended up leaving with a turkey and brie sandwich and 3 huge cupcakes. The red velvet was my favorite, although it was in a close tie for first with the carrot cake. Prices are a little expensive, but not more than I would expect to pay in a boutique bakery like this. I wish they would be a little more creative in their cupcakes by doing more than making miniature cakes. Some basic chocolate w/pink icing would be good too(although this might not be that kind of place)… maybe some sprinkles… Yum!

Worst customer service. Ever. I just called there in regards to purchasing 10 dozen cupcakes for my upcoming wedding, and just dealt with the two biggest airheads. One answers the phone. I go into the«Hi, I’d like to talk to you about ordering 10 dozen cupcakes for my wedding on August 31st.» She replies: There is no 31st in August. Me: Um, yes there is. Her: No, only 30 days. Long pause. Her: OH! Never mind. Hold please. Holding. Then the next girl gets on the phone, I state the same as above: «Hi, I’d like to talk to you about ordering 10 dozen cupcakes for my wedding on August 31st.» She straight up no-pause reply: That’s a Sunday. We’re closed on Sundays. You’ll just have to pick them up on Saturday. Me thinks: What in the hell am I, the bride, going to do with 10 dozen cupcakes the day before my wedding? Where am I going to keep them? How will I set them up? Me: Nope. Not going to work. Thanks.(Hangs up). Matty Cakes, you had your chance, and you blew it. Instantly blacklist by me.

I stopped by for a sweet treat during lunch and ended up getting a small chocolate cupcake. Cupcakes aren’t really my thing, but it was either a cupcake or a cookie, and I wasn’t in the mood for a cookie. The cupcake was cute. The chocolate breading was shiny and glistening; it was topped with a sizeable chocolate icing swirly swirl. If it were delicious, you could probably eat the cupcake in three bites. I didn’t find it tasty, so I took a few stabs at it with a fork. The cake was moist, well, way too moist, actually. The second I put a piece in my mouth, the cake broke down to the consistency of raw cookie dough. Shivers! There was NOTHING to actually chew here. NO teeth needed! The swirly swirl on top was QUITE bitter. This brought about a double exclamation of «shivers!». It didn’t so much taste like icing, but rather like sugarless, stiff chocolate pudding. I had to pop a GARLIC cracker in my mouth to cut the bitter taste. Because I’m described by some as a «picky» eater, I sought the opinion of a self-described cupcake-a-holic. Right off the bat, she complained about the texture of the cake, and she did not care for the bitter icing at all. She(like me) prefers desserts/treats to have, at minimum, a modicum of sweetness. ANY sugar would have helped! I give Matty’s two stars for the friendly staff. Also, it was quite cool to see bakers in the heat of making a large novelty cake. Most times, bakers are in the back. These guys are right up front.

I have never had anything from here, but after my experience with their customer service I would not want to order a thing. I looked through their website when I needed a cake for a friend’s birthday, and decided to call and order one. I thought since it was advertised on their website, it would be easy for me to get. Also, I was calling a day in advance. What bakery needs more time than that? It’s not like I was ordering my wedding cake. Anyways, the girl on the phone acted like I was completely distrubing her and ruining her work day by calling to place an order. When I told her what I wanted, she said«We don’t make that.» I said well, yes it says on your website you do. She sighed loudly, told me she would have to transfer me to her manager and then hung up on me. Thanks Matty Cakes. Definitely will keep my business at Rhodes.

Oh Matty Cakes, why, why? Why did you have to do this to me? Tell me how an initially mouth-watering-OMG-those-cupcakes-look-so-cute experience turned into«I’m-not-going-back-ever-again one?» I hate to be the one breaking the string of four and five stars reviews here, but my experience at Matty Cakes was about two titanic opposites: the service was one the most amazing I have ever got in Atlanta, but in terms of edibles, it was one of the biggest disappointments I have had in our beloved city. One really wants to stay and hang out with the people working there. They are fun, witty and nice and it seems they love to work at Matty’s. They guide you over the options they have, always with a smile on their faces. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich after improvising a little survey among the staff. That one was their winner. They put my sandwich together as they would for a loved one. For my awaited dessert, I asked for a Tiramisu cupcake, which they packed with care. The cherry-over-the-malt was them wishing me a great experience when having my meal, all tucked in inside a white paper bag. Up to this moment, everything was insanely idyllic. Then things began to go wrong. A business’s image gets ruined for me with that damn receipt with no tip line on it. That itself is a star off. If you have an amazing team working for you, you should make everything possible for them to get tipped! It’s really infuriating for those who, like me, rely so much on a debit card. The chicken salad sandwich was triple meh. Meh. Meh. Meh. It had nothing different from any other you’ll find at a food court restaurant. But at least, it sort of saved the day for Matty’s. When I came home, I decided I was going to have half of the sandwich and half of the cupcake. When sinking the knife on it, the first sign of «oh, oh, this is not good!» came in. It felt stiff and dry. It was. Triple dry. Dry, dry, dry. It was also flavorless and maybe even undercooked. The mascarpone frosting(mind you, I am a mascarpone looo-vveee-rrr) was bland at its best. I wasn’t even able to finish the cupcake up. I don’t know if it is because my cupcake standards are extremely high thanks to Cupcake Royale and Trophy Cupcakes,( ) both in Seattle. It is saddening that what I was expecting to be extraordinary ended up in the trash, where it belonged. For such an experience, I only have to go to my school’s vending machine to buy any of those wrapped in plastic crappy desserts. This visit to Matty Cakes was part of my «things to do in Atlanta before I leave for good» list. It made it to the«forgettables». *Tear*

…sigh…I have to write quickly because I’m about to slip into a glorious food coma… Based on the many great reviews I went to Matty Cakes to check out their offerings.(I tried to tell myself that I was going for the sandwiches, but even I’m not fooled) First, if you’re unsure of where it’s located; it’s near Fatt Matt’s on the corner of piedmont and rock springs next to the two minit car wash(with the godawful purple/green gorilla — what’s the deal with that thing). The place smells like what I imagine heaven to smell like — warm, cakey, chocolatey(yummmmmmmmmmmmm); and the baking area is in public view for those of you who like to watch ;o) The staff is friendly and helpful — Matty even stopped to chat and rang up my order. I had the SBLT, an amazing combination of smoked salmon, cream cheese, bacon and avacado with other sanwich fixin’s(I pretended to eat healthy by getting it on multigrain). I know it was good, but I barely remember eating it because I also got… THEMOSTDELICIOUSCUPCAKES I’VEEVERHAD!!! Again… I’m indecisive and greedy, so I got two; the red velvet and the carrot cake to sample and share(well…not really share). The outer crusts were crispy in the way that great muffins are, but the frosting and insides were both soft and fluffy and melted in my mouth; all without being heavy or sickeningly sweet. And for all you size queens: those babys are huge! THEPERFECTBALANCEOFMOISTURE, TEXTUREANDSWEETNESS! So good in fact that I’m going back tonight to buy some more to share(well…not really share)

I like other Unilocalers, decided to try Matty Cakes after a recent ROTD on the place. I stopped in on my way out of town to pick up some cakes for my family. The place is like an oxymoron! On the cool, calm and collected left side of the shop you find cupcakes and other goodies on display, peacefully waiting to be chosen and an attendant waiting to recommend their favorite. The right side of the shop is full of commotion as you see half a dozen bakers covered in flour creating Matty Cake specialties. The cupcakes are so huge! I chose the Carrot Cake, Red Velvet and Chocolate Tiramisu. I only tried the first two and they were so moist and yummy! I like how the cream cheese icing wasn’t too rich as I hate really sweet desserts. I imagine the Tiramisu cupcake was good too since my dad devoured it in a matter of minutes! Prices are really good since one of these babies only costs $ 2.50 to $ 3.50. Definitely recommend swinging by this cool shop if you’re in the area!

When in the south, eat red velvet! Deanna J and I braved the rain in Atlanta last week to run into Matty Cakes for ginormous(think Costco jumbo muffin size), intensely red velvet cupcakes. These babies were moist and the cream cheese frosting was decadent. And for $ 2.50 this cupcake was a steal!

YUM! Cupcakes always make me happy. Matty Cakes makes REALLYGOOD cupcakes. Red Velvet was my fave out of the three I tried(banana and lemon vanilla being the other two). I also really, really liked the Egg Salad Sandwich. Nice big chunks of egg and not too heavy on the mayo. It was a little on the pricey side, but not as expensive as Alon’s. And oh-so-good. Matt y Cakes is colorful and fun and I even got a free sample cupcake. I just wish they were open EVERY day. And had seating nearby.

A GREATCUPCAKESTEALSMEFROMEVERYTHING. The epitome of a kid snack, the kind your mother makes in abundance for a birthday at school, or simply you and your friends on a Saturday afternoon — I had forgotten what they could be. The possibility and excitement of a simple, powerful punch of sweet-cake-specialty halfway wrapped in thin paper with ridges. Better than a slice of cake because the entire creation is mine. All of it mine and no one elses. Childish indulgence with frosted love and joy. Believe the hype, the stories are true and Matty Cakes delivers on all levels. The specialty cakes and cupcakes are everything you want them to be. The staff, while busy mixing and crafting, are more than willing to answer a question, and if you’re lucky, hand out a few of their glorious mistakes or delicious extras.

It’s amazing what you can find when you drive up and down Piedmont Avenue. My newest discovery is Matty Cakes Bakery. Matty Cakes Bakery has pastries, cookies, cakes, breads, other bakes goods, sandwiches, and coffee. The environment is a cakery, bakery, coffee shop and deli wrapped into one and somehow it works well. Would you believe that I ordered a chicken salad sandwich on multi grain bread? My sandwich was $ 5.95 and loaded with grapes, chopped walnuts, blue cheese, lettuce and tomatoes and it was magically delicious. The white chocolate macadamia nut and double chocolate chip cookies I sampled were also tasty. Matty Cakes bake an assortment of cakes and pies ranging from $ 15 to $ 30 in price. Just reading the menu was a mouth watering experience and I promise to go back for the white chocolate devils fudge, chocolate old fashion, sweet potato cheesecake, chocolate orange marquis and traditional fashion cakes. Specialty cakes are also available and are customizable for varying prices. At Matty Cakes everything is made from scratch and I would much rather support a locally owned baker than the grocery store. The owner provided great service and whether it’s a sandwich, cupcake or birthday cake, I’ll be frequenting this place in the New Year. To get a glimpse of Matty Cakes beautiful creations go to .
