Now, see, J. Crew, me love you long time. And I’ve known all along(well, since about 20 when I realized) how faux your sizing is. But now you’ve jumped the shark. To wit — the vanity sizing has just gone stratospheric —(see ). I went to this store today, just browsing out of interest bc I haven’t done much shopping in «generic» stores like J Crew, BR, etc recently. It is lovely(pretty glass and wood vibe) and the people were nice(friendly, not pushy). But as I looked at the clothes — mainly shorts, and shirts — I kept seeing size 0 and 00 that looked… big. Now, I know my body and its permutations — when I am «average» size, I am a 6. When I am «too skinny,» I am a 2. When I’m «too heavy,» I am an 8 or at one time, a 10. Right now, I am on the heavy side of a 6. So while the teeny sizes looked big, literally speaking, I still got 6s and 8s to try on. They hung on me. Like, to the extent that I tried on smaller sizes that I should not have been able to fit into but the labels said I did. This isn’t a GAP outlet where everything is «kind of» size whatever and nothing is spec. This bothers me a lot — and I can only imagine leads to confusion(and consternation? self-loathing? unintended starvation or binge-eating tendencies?) for any woman who goes in looking for one size and finds that one three sizes smaller«fits.» I don’t know all the ways this is impactful — but my emotional inner style girl feels it. Shame on you, J Crew, because whatever you’re doing is just wrong.

I love J. Crew and this one does not disappoint(though admittedly, it did not seem so much different from any other J. Crew store that I’ve been to). The day that I visited with my sister, we were greeted and checked up on throughout the store by a couple young ladies. The layout(at least, for now) has women’s clothing in the front, women’s shoes and bags in the middle(near the register area), and men’s apparel towards the rear. I looked for a sale section and I guess since we’re in the middle of summer and this is Westside Provisions, after all, not many items were to be found at discounted prices. Pretty, colorful dresses in the store right now that work for events ranging from a midweek lunch with co-workers or business clients to a casual walk through Piedmont Park to summertime weddings. J. Crew normally carries classic pieces with some trendy updates to keep you well-dressed and fashion-forward. For the price, the quality of their goods is excellent. I still have many pieces from 7 – 8 years ago that still garner me compliments. The style of products here fits in very well in this highly-lauded shopping and dining complex, with the likes of Free People, Jack Spade, Anthropologie, Calypso St. Barth, and the other upscale retailers. Go and see for yourself.
