Garden Hills Pool is a City of Atlanta public pool operated by the Garden Hills Pool & Park Association, a not-for-profit, volunteer organization. The pool provides swimming and diving facilities to the general public as well as extended hours and special events to patrons who purchase an annual membership.
History
Established in 1981.
Which is the year the City of Atlanta Parks Dept faced significant budget constraints & proposed a dramatically reduced operating schedule for the Garden Hills Pool. A neighborhood resident, Stan White, organized the Garden Hills Pool & Park Association (GHPPA) and negotiated to lease the pool from the City of Atlanta, assuming all responsibility for operations, while keeping it open to the public.
Garden Hills was founded in 1925 by the P.C. McDuffie Company who planned to develop «Beautiful Garden Hills,» a 450-acre rural, park-like development marketed as «the garden spot of Atlanta.» Development of the neighborhood continued through 1941 and included a «country club» area with a swimming pool and recreational center built on land donated by Phillips Campbell McDuffie.
The pool started as a private club and was taken over by the City of Atlanta in the 1950’s. The City charged daily admission for the use of the pool and kept it open from Memorial Day until mid-August.
