We intentionally select the lines we carry at Urban Sanctuary. We believe that what you put on your skin matters; what you put in your bath matters; and what you put in your home matters. It all impacts the way you feel. We value companies whose products are organic, fair trade, & eco-​friendly because it shows they have a conscience. Among those we carry are Naturopathica, Suki, Gabriel Cosmetics, SpaRituals, Farmesthetics, Way Out Wax, Tara Ayurveda, Zum, New Directions Aromatherapy, and Zhena’s Gypsy Tea.

History

Established in 2000.

Urban Sanctuary Spa was started by two friends with a vision of a beautiful place where people could spend an afternoon or even just an hour and find total Sanctuary — a place to Unwind.

After spending over a decade exploring & studying life enhancing disciplines including Ayurveda, Mindfulness, Aromatherapy and other Healing Arts, they decided to take their vision to Athens, Georgia where Alan grew up.

Since opening Urban Sanctuary in February 2005, Candice and Alan have become very committed to Athens community organizations. These include ATHICA, Athens Wedding Professionals, Project Safe, Five Points Local Artist Show & Boybutante AIDS Foundation.

Alan McArthur and Candice Courcy met in Tucson, Arizona and worked together at Gadabout Salon Spas. With over 25 years combined experience in the Spa Industry, they have both trained and educated Spa Staff and Massage Therapist around the US and Mexico.

We were visiting from Sarasota and wanted to relax. I have had massages all over the world and I have to say that Jenn gave me one of the best massages I have ever had. I tried to offer her a ticket home with me;) Then to make the experience even more memorable they arranged for the Gymdog’s massage therapist Katie to come to our hotel room and take care of our girls sore from gymnastics camp! I would highly recommend this spa as a must if you are ever in Athens!

Let’s just say… I am excited for my next microdermabrasion appointment. Dena is awesome and I enjoyed talking with her I’ve had some experience in other spa’s but this took the cake. I had a headache before arrival and as soon as I walked in, the soft aromatherapy scents melted my headache away. Beautifully crafted layout, it wasn’t this stuffy modern spa interior. It has charm! Dena worked a miracle on face, before my skin was congested and irritated now it’s smooth and red free! I can’t wait to go back

My girlfriend and I have been so stressed! I work on my feet and she is finishing a PhD. We did a one hour massage and it was awesome. I even set our next appointment before we left. Jan was great!

This place is magical.
I have heard great things for a long time, but finally went to get a brow wax. First off, the building is beautiful. It has an old-​timey, rustic feel, while being simultaneously immaculate and sleek. The waiting area is comfy and welcoming, and the lighting and music are tasteful and not over-​the top. The room I was taken into for the wax was also beautiful and squeaky-​clean. The staff was friendly and professional, and seemed to enjoy working there-​my aesthetician raved about how much she loves her job. All in all, I got a lot out of the experience, especially considering I only came for a brow wax! I will be back soon.

Great place! Classy, soothing, professional. I had a prenatal massage and was very pleased. I also had a pedicure which was good/​average; I’ve had better at nail only salons… they don’t have the nice pedicure chairs with tubs, etc. However it was still quite enjoyable. Loved the warm neck pillows. Will come back to try other services.

I have never personally been to Urban Sanctuary. So why am I writing a review? Or better yet, why should you read my review? Well, let me tell you.
This review is written for everyone out there trying to decided whether they should get their spouse/​parent/​sibling/​boss/​significant other/​neighbor/​random person on the street an appointment for one of the services Urban Sanctuary offers. I have made appointments for my wife to go get massages/​pedicures from Urban Sanctuary multiple times, and I am telling you Urban Sanctuary is FOR REAL.
Every time my wife enters Urban Sanctuary, she emerges an entirely new person. Her normal radiance seems to have multiplied to the point there pure liquid serenity seeps from every pore. Instead of walking through our front door, she floats, leaving an effervesent trail of unadulterated zen. She also smells really good.
So for anyone out there considering whether this is a good gift, the answer is a resounding yes. Urban Sanctuary is worth every penny.

Review from Beverly Hills, CA: Yesterday I had the opportunity to visit Urban Sanctuary. I absolutely LOVE the «Little house on the Prairie» feel when you first walk inside — so comfortable and familiar. The lay-​out was super warm/​cozy, and I could have spent all day in there. It looked like an awesome barn that had been restored — with loft rooms upstairs for facials or body-​work, and the waiting area in the back was super comfy. The team provided only the most outstanding care and customer service. Now — let’s get down to business. As a corporate traveler and health/​beauty professional myself — when I get a massage, I usually ask for deep tissue — which is rarely relaxing for me at all. In fact — it’s work and takes a lot of concentration and breathing. So when I met my therapist My’Leka — I began wondering if she could handle it. BELIEVE ME — she’s a healer!!! Breathe-​2, 3, 4, 5, 6. My’Leka ‘s therepy is so on par for the treatments I’ve experienced around the world — and here she is in Athens, GA — AMAZING. And I’m sure she can handle anything from relaxing to a total body work-​out which is what I usually request. Urban Sanctuary — LOVE LOVE LOVE. And I can’t wait to get back to see you.

If I could give this place 100 stars, I would. Seriously, this is the best massage that I have EVER had. The overall experience feels like a really swanky, upscale salon in Hollywood. They treat you like kings and queens. They provide you with robes, it’s private, the massages are personal, intimate, sensual and intentional. My masseuse was completely professional in asking me what areas I most wanted her to work on, and which areas I didn’t feel comfortable being massaged. The overall experience seriously left me feeling like I was on cloud9! I ended up buying a partner massage for my parents’ anniversary and they both LOVED it, as it was their first massage. My Mom reported that my Dad was so relaxed and comfortable that he fell asleep! Haaha! Seriously wish I still lived in Athens because this would be a REGULAR spot for me!

A dermatologist I know really enjoys regaling women with tales of the fungi and lost toe nails that he sees as a result of manicures and pedicures. As a germaphobe, I took that to heart. Urban Sanctuary is the only place I will get pedicures because their hygiene practices satisfy even my most neurotic desires. And on top of that, my favorite masseuse (and you guessed it, I am also not crazy about being touched by strangers) Krista works there. She is amazing and the only reason I made it through law school without a more serious drinking problem.

Just getting settled back in after a whirlwind wedding weekend in my beloved Athens. I needed wedding make-​up and nails and found a few great reviews for Urban Sanctuary and I am SO thankful I decided to check it out!
I HIGHLY recommend Layne for make-​up and Kela for nails! Both these gals were beyond personable and totally chill, which made for an excellent stress free elopement scenario (and trust me, eloping is the way to go for stress free).
I will upload pictures of my awesome make-​up once I get them back from Twin Hearts (probably the best photographers in the southeast)!!
In short, this is a great one stop shop to relax and get done up!

I was so pleased with my first experience at Urban Sanctuary. Laney is an excellent esthetician and makeup artist, and the ladies in the lobby and front desk area are friendly and made me feel very welcome. It is easy to park on site, and the atmosphere is lovely and relaxing. I highly recommend this day spa!

This place is great. It is super relaxing. I have been there twice and have great experiences both times. the last time my massage therapist was Lauren. Since the massage had been given to me as a gift they had written down info for a massage that was not what I wanted, not their mistake but the mistake of who gave it to me. Well not a problem Lauren took the time to ask me what i wanted and gave me a great massage!
This place is in a older church. Everyone is very friendly and make sure you leave fully relaxed. While you are in your massage area there are no noises like I have found at other places where you can hear people talking or phones ringing. The linens they uses are very nice as well.
if you are in Athens you need to get a massage form this place.

Urban Sanctuary has a new location, and though I’m bummed that I can no longer walk to my visits, I think the facility is great. They now have a high frequency machine to use on blemishes, and I love the Naturopathica pumpkin enzyme peel they’ve started using. I think everyone should try this spa!
