Modern Barber Shop

Came here after a recommendation from a friend, and I was not disappointed. When I head «Barber Shop,» I think of stodgy old men swapping war stories while one of them gets a trim that matches the poster of haircuts from 1956. This is not that place. The barbers still swap stories and chat while cutting your hair, but they do a really good job. I came for a trim, and left with a really good haircut.
Price is good, too.
I’ll definitely be back.

I really needed a shape-​up, so on my way to work I stopped in, planning to get one only if there was no wait. It looked like all the barbers were occupied, so I mentioned that I couldn’t wait around and would come back another time. I didn’t realize the older gentleman sanding to the side was a barber, but another barber sure let me know (by barking at me with wide eyes, causing customers and other barbers to laugh). They lost a customer today. I will not go to an establishment that treats customers disrespectfully.

I am very laid back and this was so bad i created a Unilocal account to say this guy sucked!
He kept stopping to watch TV or to look at other people waiting. He never touched my sideburns and when i asked for a little shorter he just got grumpy and starting cutting the top of my head really fast but not doing the back so my hair is all different lengths on top. I noticed all of this but was thinking its all in my head i am sure its fine then i showed a friend she confirmed it and said i had to get it cut again.
Please read the other reviews and every low rating is this man. I wished i would have looked at at Unilocal before i came to this place. This man is hurting the reputation of the other barbers who have good reviews

its like an old school barbershop with people just talking about things happening in the neighborhood. decent haircut nothing special. Im not real picky about my hair but if your someone who is picky I wouldnt recommend them. Its more of a place to go bullshit for a few get a decent haircut and then leave. All the barbers are extremely friendly and personable and will go out of there way for you if you ask.

3 ½ is too low for this place. This has become my go to place, its what you would expect from a barbers shop with reasonable prices.

Pretty good barber shop, nick is commonly known to be the better cutter. This place reminds me of that old fashion European barbershops that talk bout men things that happen around the neighborhood. There prices have gone up, so I have been absent and found a better shop. Always keep this place as my secondary.

This is the classic NYC neighborhood barbershop experience. Everyone there is very friendly and chatty, never overly fake or saccharine. The prices are solid, I get my hair cut for under $ 20. Fantastic. You go, you get your haircut, you shoot the shit you leave looking better, what else do you want?

if your a young guy like me who loves his shape this might not be the place, the people are good but shapeups arent the best

I went there a few times and i did get a decent haircut the first couple times i went there, after that the quality started to decline. i like good fades and these aren’t the guys to do it. they are probably better with longer hair, not police lineups.

I go to Arthur so I’m not sure about the old guy. He’s good though. Follows instructions. I really can’t complain. I usually don’t get my hair too short either so I guess it’s not that hard. But I like the haircut for the price.

Tried this place out due to the Unilocal recommendations and was a little displeased with the haircut I received and the price I had to pay for it. I was hoping to get a cut for 10 bucks and it was my fault for not asking when I walked in as opposed to when I asked when I was sitting down, but I had to pay 14 bucks for the haircut I received.
First off, I believe he was the older of the two, would stop periodically to watch television while he was cutting my hair. I’m sorry to interrupt «Pineapple Express» but seriously dude, you can focus on my hair for a few minutes at least. In fact, he seemed so captivated by «Pineapple Express» that he barely gave my hair a once over. Yes the hot foam was nice on my neck and yes he seemed a nice enough guy but I actually had to go back and straighten my hairline. The dude barely even looked over that stuff. Call me meek and a whiner, but I didn’t even notice it until I got home an took a shower.
I’m going to try out Alex’s Barber Shop next time, it seems like a decent place for a nice quality price.

The old guy… Jesus H Christ… he destroyed my hair. I’ve been here several times, and the younger guys (the brothers) always did a good job. But when I went and got the old guy… What a nightmare. I got home and noticed all different lengths on the top of my head. Literally, one clump of hair was an inch and a half, one was 4 inches. When I spiked my hair like I always do, I looked ridiculous. I tried to fix it myself to no avail. NEVER AGAIN. If you go here, AVOID THE OLD MAN! The 2 brothers know what they’re doing… The old man does not!

Great neighborhood barbershop! Great haircut at a great price. Friendly and courteous service. I’ve been coming here for years.

There’s a short way and a long way to review Modern Barber. The short way is that I brought my son here for his first haircut and I’ve been taking him back ever since. He’s 8 ½ now and he looks forward to coming here as much as he likely realizes that I’m forcing him to come here because Dad enjoys getting is hair did here, too. NO SPOILERS, but you will enjoy this barber shop more than attending any summer blockbuster @ #UAkaufman or any meal on Astoria’s Broadway. (Although there are some bomb-​ass meals to be found on Broadway, so it’s a close call).
If the long version is needed to put this place over, then I’ll do what I can.

I’ve been going to the barbershop for over 15 years now, and, I don’t see myself going anywhere else anytime soon.
The good thing is that since all of the barbers there give the same, high-​quality haircut, there’s no need to wait for any barber in particular, so your wait time is always short, relative to other shops.
Comfortable, clean and fun is my experience each time. The two owners are real smart asses, which always makes the time go by better.
A classic-​looking, old school, neighborhood barbershop with top-​notch service… and a good haircut, too!

I’ve been coming here since ’99. Even though I no longer live in Astoria, I still make the trip here every few weeks.
This place is a classic New York barber shop, in the best sense of the word.
Personally I go old-​school, Dominick is the guy. He has been here since the Sixities However Nick and Arturo, who recently bought the place from Dominick, do a great job as well.

I think these guys do good job, but they seem to do with non-​asian head (don’t question, that’s what my friends all said after my haircut)
So I went there a few times in the past, each time different guy cut my hair. I like all of them, funny, usual berbar talk, had fun.
As far as the skill concerned, they are good, but make sure you know what you are getting for $ 12. And I’ve seen a few guys there getting haircut, they all looked good, I thought mine look good, but then after I left all my friends said «dude, what happen to your hair?»
I’ve changed to other location, but I still think these guys can deliver.

I have a bad habit of letting my hair grow well after it should have been cut. Sure, I revel in the paradox of looking like a hippie when I’m actually a capitalist foot soldier, but the motivation is really a fear of the BAD HAIRCUT. And I don’t much like the whole process, anyway.
Since I moved to New York, I’ve gotten most of my haircuts at Astor Hair — the arena of barbers that’ll process you as soon as you arrive and have you out in ten minutes flat. Of course, the price of this convenience was a string of hit-​or-​miss haircuts. Because of this uncertainty, I tended to procrastinate any time I needed a haircut.
Well, today, I think I found my new barber. I dropped into Modern Barber Shop (right under the N at Broadway) to see if I could find a better solution than Astor Hair.
I waited for about five minutes, then sat in Nick’s chair. I gave my instructions, and felt pretty confident that he understood them. He even asked for clarification on one or two points. Throughout the process, he made pleasant banter with me and the other patrons and staff. This is clearly a very friendly joint. And, more importantly, I could tell he wasn’t completely scissor-​happy, which helped me relax.
When it was all over, he reiterated what I asked for, and showed that he’d delivered, complete with the hot shave touch ups. I was happy with the service and the results. And the price ($ 10 before tip) was not bad at all.
