House of Sudz

The ladies who work here are very nice and they work extremely hard. Most of the ladies there are probably no taller than 5 foot 2 and they lift heavy bags of laundry and get the wash done within 24 hours. Drop off is always very quick and, if they are overloaded with orders, they will let you know. They have never messed up any of my clothes and they always fold them, and organize them for me.
The place is clean. It’s a laundromat with hundreds of people coming in and out every day so it’s bound to get a little dirty sometimes. I’m not sure what the other reviewers are talking about: I have never seen a cockroach, there are almost always available dryers when I do my own laundry, and I have always received my money back when the machine eats my coins (which has not happened a lot).
They also have plenty of seats if you are going to hang out at the laundromat while your clothes are being washed. On nice days, you can sit outside and people watch. This place also has free wifi.

This laundry mat can be PACKED on the weekends around 10−11AM so I try to get my laundry done on Thursday or Friday night when it’s empty. Recently a lot of the dryers have been «out of order» making it even harder to snag a free machine! The coin machine has also been out of order for quite some time so you have to find someone who works there to give you quarters. What I would give to have my own washer and dryer in my apartment!

Sadly, this didn’t stay my laundromat very long. Only like 2 of the dryers work and everything else ate up my quarters and left me w/​cold and wet clothes. I get it’s a tough job and can be unpleasant but the women who work here are never pleasant. On to the next…

SO ANNOYED and disappointed.
I put in coins to dry my clothing (6 quarters) and pushed the start button and it didn’t work. So I pushed the coin return button, and no quarters came back. I told the lady who worked there and she puts a quarter in, the machine starts running, and was like «it’s not broken!»
Seriously, I’m NOT the type to try and play people and get a free buck fifty, and after I told her that, she just sat back and watched as I put my money in AGAIN and said she couldn’t «do anything to help me». AND, this is not the first time I’ve had problems with their machines.
I just told her that by acting unsympathetic towards people who have issues, she’s losing customers. Unilocal community, we need to show business owners that we are to be listened to.

My current laundromat, simply because of proximity.
Cash only, cheap, 1 day drop-​off turnaround and no shirt hangers provided.

I’ve been coming to this laundromat for the last three years. Up until this point, I would have given it three stars. As others have mentioned, it gets the job done. There are always machines that are out of service, and depending on how many, your time spent and the laundromat will vary.
The biggest issue are the dryers. As mentioned above, there are always a few that are out of service. I’ve also learned that unless you put it on high heat for an hour, your clothes will still come out damp. At my last trip, I had put my laundry in for 56 mins, medium, and my clothes came out still completely damp and room temperature, which was never the case. I explained it to the lady and she refused to do anything about it since the timer had already expired.
The reason I’m giving this place two starts is (1) I asked the woman to put a sign on the dryer so people know it’s not working properly and won’t lose their money. She didn’t. (2) They raised the prices on the dryers. It is now 25 cents for 6 mins instead of 8. That’s a substantial price hike considering how long it takes the machines to get the job done.

Not always the cleanest, and not always in good repair, but it gets the job done on most days.
Lately there have been quite a few «out of service» dryers, which doesn’t surprise me one bit, because their dryers do a pretty horrendous rendition of drying wet laundry. More often than not my laundry is still damp upon removal, but instead of cramming more quarters in the machine (waste of time and money IMO), I just line dry them at home.
The girls that work here are friendly enough. Don’t expect a smile from them, but they are always attentive when you need help.
This review is for the do-​it-​yourself laundry facilities, NOT the drop-​off laundry service.

While I prefer the machines at smaller laundromat down the street, I prefer HOS as a hwole. It’s more spacious, they have free wi-​fi which works most of the time, they have tons more machines, they have an okay amount of counter space and seating, but, most importantly, their staff is friendly and helpful.
I was there shortly after Hurrican Sandy and there was some sort of power issue where ¾ of the dryers weren’t producing hot air. Most everyone was irate, and taking their frustrations out on the ladies. But they remained calm, addressed the issues as well as they could, and did their best to keep order. To top it off, they were extra faithful to the nice regular that I try to be for them. I remained understanding, tried to fix the issues myself, and they recognized me as a regular who speaks with and is nice to them. So they watched my drying loads for me, added more quarters on the house, and helped me get things done quickly.
That set me as a customer for the life of my residency in this area. And makes me recomend them above their area competitors.

Friendly service and honest business. These are the types of businesses that make a neighborhood easy to live in. It is convenient and clean. I have never seen roaches and the staff always is cleaning the place. The drop off service is also efficient and everything comes back clean and folded. The self service is good as well. The machines are clean and never rip you off. I’ve been to laundromats that you put money in there and the clothes come out still dirty. Never at house of sudz. Sometimes the place gets crowded and you have to wait for a machine but that’s just a sign of its popularity in the neighborhood which has other laundromat options. Only thing I would say negative is that it is a bit pricey, but everything in Astoria is getting more expensive so it’s not necessarily just House of Sudz overcharging.

This laundromat has a strangely bright, sterile look to it. However that is a little deceiving seeing that 75% of all my visits I’ve encountered rather large cockroaches scuttling around on the tile floor.
The staff member usually is pretty quick to take care of them after jumping in excitement.
You may find that you need to wait for a machine despite the large number of them. You see the machines are separated /​priced by load capacity. So if you’re not careful and wondering why you are in a row with nobody using the machine. You’re probably loading up a $ 3/​wash extra large load machine.
The aisle with all the drying machines is a bit cramped especially when someone is at the folding table.
Overall it is convenient and well maintained.
