Alpha Beta Hops is a small family commercial hop yard growing 100% Organic Cascade Hops (certified by Oregon Tilth). Our business is growing…
History
Established in 2008.
After 17 years raising cattle and growing hay in the Rogue Valley, the Pierce Family decided in 2008 to start a commercial hop yard here in Southern Oregon. With an eye toward local community-supported agriculture and sustainable living, the entire family pitched in to augment the field with 120 yards of certified organic compost and erect juniper poles and a trellising system. In the Spring of 2009 we were ready to plant 1800 Cascade rhizomes. Our fields are cow pastures, untouched by any non-organic fertilizers or pesticides and we are now certified 100% Organic by Oregon Tilth. Our goal is to start selling the best local organic hops this Fall to local craft and home brewers at a farm stand, local supply stores and online. Hoppy Brewing!
Meet the Business Owner
Steve and Spencer P.
Business Owner
Steve and his son Spencer decided to get this venture going with the help of wife Rebecca and son Morgan. The family lived in Munich, Germany for 4 years and developed a love for beer and the beer culture. Steve has been home brewing here in Oregon off and on for 19 years, and he and Spencer use some of the harvest for their own beer. Starting a small scale hop yard in the Rogue Valley is a continuous learning and problem-solving experience. We are the only commercial venture in a valley that supported a huge amount of hop production in the last century. Reviving hops production in this area of vineyards and orchards has been exciting for everyone we meet. While farming is rewarding (especially in view of the sustainable agriculture movement all around us), it is also very labor-intensive. Thankfully, we have had dozens of friends readily volunteer to help with the first two harvests/social events. We’re still learning about hops and organic farming and we love it!
