I really want to like this place because its the only place in town but I just cant. The pizza is so inconsistent(and expensive). We decided to try grinders instead but those were horrible, nothing fresh on them. Frozen meatballs and the turkey was just aweful quality. I just don’t have the money to waste and chose to make the drive if I want pizza.

Midway is a staple of Ashford and as the only pizza place in town it definitely comes in handy when you’re stuck in the woods with no food in sight. The atmosphere is very local and with that you either know everyone or are camped or alone depending on if you’re from the area. The bartenders are very friendly as are the rest of the staff. I typically get their meatball grinders, they’re always consistently good and filling. Worth a try when in Ashford!

My brother and I came here for an early lunch and we had the place to ourselves. Crystal was super friendly and we shared quite a few laughs and traded stories during our lunch experience. We started with an order of buffalo wings, which are offered in regular or hot. I opted for regular since I wanted to taste the rest of my meal. They were battered and delicious. My brother ordered the Paul Newman Midway Special — a hearty Greek salad and a small pizza that was topped with onions, peppers, tomato, sausage, ground beef, and pepperoni(which is a ridiculous amount of food for one person to eat) and I ordered the gyro deluxe(which just means the flatbread sandwich comes with their hand-cut fries). The gyro alone was tasty and plentiful, we really didn’t need the fries, but they were delicious. Such a treat to find a diner that hits the spot! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve passed it by on my way from RI to CT! Next time, I’ll be sure to stop in!

the staff is very rude I went there and I believe the owner was very upset and you should not discipline your employees in front of customers

Midway is a bar. It’s got some food, pretty good pizza, but nothing special. Except the staff. There is a nearby camp whose volunteers and employees frequent the place after the campers return home. The staff at Midway have developed relationships with them, know all about the camp, and provide them with the respite they need before another load of kids come in expecting to have the camp employees’ full energy and attention. Midway isn’t fancy, but they are the heroes behind the heroes.

I could up this to four stars depending upon the outcome of another visit. Midway between Hartford and Providence on Rt. 44(haha, get it?), we’ve driven past The Midway more times than I can count. Literally. It became not so much a restaurant, rather a beacon of sorts, a landmark telling us we were nearing our weekend destination. We never gave a thought to actually stopping and eating there. It’s not a pretty place, at least not from the outside. Just a big, standard-issue road house, like many a bygone-era New England inn. But curiosity(and boredom with the usual suspects) got us, and we stopped in for dinner the other day. I must admit, it was a pleasant surprise. The interior is as clean and nice as the exterior is bland. The fusion Greek/Key West décor made me smile at the irony of being in this little dump halfway between two big Northeast metro areas, getting a tropical tourist vibe in a pub/restaurant lined with etched dolphin mirrors and classic Greek geometric trim. The place is actually, uh… I can’t use the word ‘cool’ because it’s not. But it was oddly nice and homey. And huge. I mean, really big. It never looked that big on our drive-bys. Normal sized main dining area, with a large bar off to one side and a banquet/function/zombie apocalypse room all just a swinging’ door away! Don’t laugh at the ‘zombie apocalypse’ reference. They’re ready. One of the things that caught my eye years ago was the sign out front, placed after the killer October snowstorm of 2011 which left many of us, this writer included, without power for more than a week: «We Have A Generator.» The Midway was safe-haven, advertising itself as the place to hunker down with a pizza and cold beer when all hell breaks loose. I like that. Enough of the flowery b.s., the food was okay. That’s why only three stars. The overall experience was good. It’s a very friendly place with lots of locals. Of course there are lots of locals, there is NOTHINGELSE in Ashford! This place could serve nearby roadkill as a special and you just might buy it because you still have a 7000 mile drive before you reach Hartford or Providence and you can’t even find a place which sells Doritos. Okay, so I exaggerate a bit. I started with a cup of seafood chowder, and ordered the spanakopita(spinach pie) and Greek salad special. D got a Gyro with fries. Hey, the owners are Greek so I hear, how bad can it be? The seafood chowder was excellent. Really, I loved it. But let’s call a scallop a scallop… it was just really good clam chowder with some extra stuff thrown in. Some scallops, shrimp, calamari, whatever. It doesn’t matter. Kudos to the chef who thought of this. Our dinners weren’t quite as good. My spinach pie was soggy as all get-out, whatever that means. It tasted good, but void of the wonderful crispy filo dough texture. Essentially a soggy mess. The accompanying greek salad was fresh, and totally flavorless. Iceberg lettuce with a few cukes, giant carrot frisbees, a smattering of olives, and a Rubik’s Cube of feta cheese tossed into the middle. I understand that«real» Greek salads don’t actually have pepperoncini, but how about at least having some real Greek salad dressing? I had to choose between balsamic vinaigrette or Italian. Is it too much to ask for Greek dressing for my Greek salad in a restaurant with Greek décor and actually run by Greeks?(This goes to all you other offender restaurants out there, too — if you call it a Greek salad, don’t make me use Italian dressing). My wife’s Gyro was equally adequate. Really, it looked good and it tasted good. Not great — she ended up just opening the pita bread and eating the contents. The fries looked great, too, but they weren’t. Skins on, golden brown, they looked awesome. Nah, kind of like my spanakopita, they were a soggy mess. Not crispy at all. As negative as all that sounds, we liked The Midway. The menu has something for everyone and there is a big bar room with tv’s blaring if that’s your thing. It is an oasis along the desolate 44 strip. The place was hopping, even Sunday evening. The servers are very friendly and attentive. It’s clean and inviting. If they could bring the food up a notch I could easily see giving it five stars on the Roadhouse Scale.

Eggplant grinder is always soggy and gross. Ordered a pizza once and found a piece of plastic embedded in the cheese. Chicken parm grinder is also soggy and unappetizing. Prices are also on the expensive side.

About 12 of us came in here. We sometimes go, it’s not an impressive place, but is convenient. Here are peoples feedbacks : Chile. Is mild, rlly good. Corn chowder. Great, not too much Corn. Mozzarella sticks. Very stringy and delish. Chicken fingers. Run of the mill, and crispy. Honey mustard sauce. Was just ok. Hand cut fries are on the soggy side. Wings. Good, mild, crispy outside and soft inside. Gyro. Great! Very delicious. Burger was tasty but could B e bigger. Fries that came with it were overdone. Chicken cutlet with mayo. Great! Juicy! Calamari. Awesome, crispy n light. Fetuccini Alfredo. Run of the mill. Ravioli. Seems to have been made out of mystery Meat. Peanut butter pie was good. Cheesecake type texture. French silk was good. Mousse was run of the mill. Wait staff, we had Tracy. She was fast, witty and funny. This place has good lighting. It isn’t too bright, but you can see everything. Clean atmosphere. We would give this place 3 stars according to food because some things really are good. But gave it more because the service and environment really is wonderful for a group.

In the past had tried the Midway and written it off. Lately we have been there 2 or 3 times a month. There are new dinner specials that are reasonably priced. The drinks are generous, and again, reasonably priced. Service in the bar is always attentive. Best of all Peter’s wife has started making home made Greek dishes. They are great! The Spinach Pie is fantastic, as are the deserts. It is unusual to find real Greek food at a Pizza Place even if the owners are Greek. Kudos to George and Peter for trying something new.

Midway is a great place to get lunch, dinner or drinks. They have an awesome beer selection and full bar, and their menu has something for everyone. Their pizza is definitely one of the best things on the menu. The service here is always super friendly and good. Always like coming here, and as someone who lives in Ashford, I definitely appreciate that they have a backup generator and so are«always open!»

Low on atmosphere but the pizza is pretty decent. We prefer their pizza to that of Willington Pizza as a matter of fact — plus, they cut it the way a pizza is supposed to be cut(hint: not in squares). Fries need work — usually limp and(too) dark brown. Most grinders pretty good. Owners are friendly, waitstaff is usually very nice.

Midway has a lot of potential with a high visibility location on Rte 44. But they need to pay attention to the details better. Our waitress was nice but totally mishandled our order so that we ended up waiting over an hour for our lunch to arrive. Once it showed up, it was mostly tasty. The four of us ordered 2 pizzas, chicken souvlaki & patty melt. The pizzas have a thicker crust than I like, but the 2 people who ordered them seemed to like it just fine. Chicken soulaki was ok, but I adore tzatiki sauce and the sludge they served just wasn’t close. The patty melt was standard stuff. The true downer was the service. She was apologetic, but it was just far too long and the place was not at all busy. She should have caught her mistake much sooner and offered us more than just a salty cup of soup as an apology. Plus she kept laughing and going on about how she had to work a double(I don’t care) and how she wished she could be outside in the nice weather(how about you do your job and serve my food in a reasonable time???). Won’t be stopping here again next time we’re camping in the area.

The Midway has been around, in one form or another, for years. The pizza is good– thick crusted, heavy pizza with a decent sauce, toppings, etc. And the drinks are good :) However, the remainder of items on the menu are just okay– even though there is a Greek influence here, the two Greek items offered aren’t great, the sandwiches not so tasty, the pasta no different than you’d get at home(my house anyhow!), and the fries are just plain not good. Add some wonderful Greek items to the menu, maybe some sweet potatoe fries done in clean oil, add more fresh veggie offerings– and I’d be glad to change this review. Another restaurant that I really want to like– and can’t . Sorry, Midway. You have a captive audience in Ashford. Upgrade your ingredients and new recipes to reflect the prices charged– and I’d LOVE to change my mind!

George and Pete run the kind of family restaurant you find up in Maine, tucked in the middle of nowhere, like Shangri-La. It looks like a big log cabin and has tons of space inside, with a huge bar room, a huge eating area with laminated wood tables, and a large private room. The Greek style pizza is excellant and consistent, with cooks that will probably retire there, and the cheese is to die for. They’re very generous with toppings, and service is absolutely top shelf. The salads glow bright green they’re so fresh, and the waitstaff always treats you right. The assorted menu has almost everything you’d expect, with clams when they’re in season. The lasagna has that killer cheese, and it melts in your mouth like somethiing from Cheese Heaven. Revel in it; be the big cheese. Fun for the whole family, and the owners do a lot for the community. It was a favorite of Paul Newman’s, and every year huge celebrities come by to raise money for his Hole in the Wall Camp. A truly great place.
