Specialties
ShaoLin Kung Fu of Asheville teaches traditional Chinese martial arts from the ShaoLin Temples of China. We teach over 30 animal styles as well as the internal arts of t’al chi, pa qua, and hsing i. Our kung fu is pretty and promotes health and wellness, but is also based on street-worthy, real world self defense techniques.
History
Established in 1998.
Starting out in the Downtown YMCA, we quickly outgrew that facility and rented our present location in the heart of West Asheville. We continue to teach traditional kung fu, avoiding tournament styles, multiple promotions, and quick and easy black belts. As pretty as true kung fu is, it has to be street effective and based on realistic concepts of disabling an opponent. WE have grown to a very family-type atmosphere with 7 staff, classes Monday through Saturday, and a lot of hard work.
Meet the Business Owner
Bob C.
Business Owner
Bob Cummings started his kung fu career over 23 years ago when he began studying ShaoLin kung fu under Master Garry Mullins in Knoxville, TN as a college project, eventually earning his Black Sash 7 years later. Since then, he has continued to study under Elder Master Mullins, subsequently earning his second, third and fourth degree Black Sashes. His major systems of study are Shan Tung Black Tiger, Omei White Crane, ShaoLin Bird, and various other animal forms. Not neglecting the internal arts, Bob also studies Yang and Chen T’ai Chi, Hsing I, and Temple Pa Qua. While Bob runs the classes, his wife, second degree black sash Sue Cummings, runs and manages the business as the business manager, finance whiz, and general «get it done» person.
