History

Established in 2013.

Geraldine’s Bakery is named in honor of owner, Fred’s mother, who grew up in an orphanage in Thomasville, N.C. Fred learned the bakery business from his father, who was an apprentice in Berlin, Germany before moving to the U.S. in 1952.

Fred owned a bakery on Long Island for 25 years before shifting into semi-retirement 10 years ago. He sold Cheesecake King… bought a Harley Davidson and rode to 49 states with his wife, Rosemary. They were visiting friends in North Carolina when they fell in love with Asheville. So after a final 11,000 mile ride to Alaska from New York, Fred and Rosemary joined their daughter, a teacher in Asheville City schools, and opened the perfect neighborhood bakery.

Fred thinks this is a good place for him to start baking again, and he appreciates the focus on local sustainability. «Asheville’s ‘go local’ attitude is one of the things that drew me to this area,» he says. Of course kind generous customers and beautiful Blue Ridge Mountain roads help.
