MMTA Firearms Training Academy

My friend took a few classes with MMTA about 2 years ago and loved it. His instructor was Robby, something? Anyway I went on Unilocal to see the reviews and not sure why the last review was almost a year old. I wanted to know if the level of quality is still the same (or better) before spending my money. I heard they lost a few good instructors a year ago so I wanted to check them out first. I guess I will look elsewhere until I see more current reviews on here.

This is a decent course for the Utah CCW permit, but, like a few of the other reviews, I thought it was way too heavy on the sales pitch to buy tactical pens, pepper spray, holsters, knives, passport photos, etc. There seemed to be simply too much emphasis on selling stuff rather than conveying information. My first priority is too learn about having a CCW permit, so I thought the course could have offered more substance and less sales. That said, Ron is a fun and dynamic instructor who has an excellent presentation style, and I did learn a few things. He is a lieutenant; I would have loved to have known what police department Ron works for.

It was fun and educational. Overall, it was a great environment to learn in.

The course was well designed and the instructors were thorough. They were not very good at being on schedule; we started about 5 minutes late and ended about 10 minutes late. We were told that they would scan our drivers licenses and that did not happen. The instruction was useful and on point with my prior training.
I had no problem with the mid class break and sales pitch. They are there to make money, if you do not want their products do not buy them. There was no real pressure to buy.

I saw another review, quoted below, which is 100% spot-​on. Ron was a very entertaining and engaging instructor. That was the real positive. His staff was friendly and the class moved smoothly. No complaints there. As for the content? It was not at all worthwhile. I take issue with some of the legal and practical points he made. The whole part about throwing a key out the window to the police? Absurd. The matter of not using hollowpoint ammunition? Absurd and not at all factual. The sales pitches are kinda’ silly. The stuff they are selling is Chinese junk and not terribly useful — low quality holsters and knives. Take the class to get your Utah cert, but don’t pay close attention, the content is questionable. I did learn some very useful information, but, some of the content I think should’ve been given more time and discussion, but, we were told to go home and look on the internet for it. Maybe there would have been more time for it without so much extra selling of stuff. BTW, passport photos that your will need for your application will cost you an extra $ 15 through these guys. It is not included in the price of the class. If I was to do it again, I think I would research it more and find someone who focused more on content and less on sales pitches. It would be worth it to me to pay more to get a better content filled class. I was dissatisfied with the fingerprints and will get them redone somewhere else. Only reason I gave it 3 stars was because of the useful info I did get that I didn’t know before and Ron was entertaining and not boring. BTW, I don’t think he’s an actual cop. He wore a badge, but, don’t think it was a police badge. He never identified himself as being employed by a particular police dept. Doesn’t matter to me, but, someone here said he was a cop.»

I took the 4 hour concealed carry course using a Groupon though there are many web deals too.
Instructors: our instructor was a NRA certified cop who was an experienced instructor. Kept the class moving quickly through Q&A sessions and short videos.
Class: entertaining and VERY informative. I learned how to handle misfires correctly for the first time after shooting since I was 9.
Materials: well organized and focused. Slides are available from website after class.
Highly recommend this class to anyone who is thinking about purchasing a gun or who already has one. The safety and maintenance tips were superb.

Amazingly thorough. I have some firearms training, but my wife has none. 1. She stayed awake. There was plenty of good, lively conversation from the facilitators and the class. Jokes were told where appropriate and they were actually funny. 2. She was actually interested. Mind you, she is not a gun fan and was just there b/​c I begged. 3. She’s interested in taking more educational classes. 4. She wants to practice shooting! Enough said!

Another Living Social deal and money well spent. Although it’s a real trek out to Dulles from DC, these instructors are professional, funny, and personable. Although the class is geared towards Utah law, they are knowledgeable on other jurisdictions and willing to answer questions about DMV laws (as in DC-​Maryland-​Virginia).
The main instructor was Ron Crouse, and I would definitely take another class from him. The other guy was equally funny (I just didn’t get his card so I can’t recall the name). Not a single complaint. I was entertained the entire time.

I attended one of their training classes after purchasing a Living Social deal and I was extremely pleased with my experience.
The course covered everything as advertised and the instructors were not only very engaging, but they were extremely knowledgable in their field. The support staff were also fantastic and everything moved with a great deal of efficiency. They clearly respected your time.
If you’re considering taking a class with these folks, you’re in good hands. I look forward to utilizing MMTA in the future.
