5280 Angler

Jay is phenomenal! He did a terrific job in explaining 5280 Angler offerings, helped me understand what I need to consider for a guided trip and offered very helpful information on gift ideas for my husband. Talking with Jay by phone was a very positive and uplifting experience.

Amazing fishing experience! I bought a Groupon for a full day guide and was paired with Gene. We were new to fly fishing but Gene was extremely knowledgeable and showed us the ropes in no time. He knew the water well, was always positive, and just very enjoyable to be around. Jay happened to join us at the end of the day because he was in the area, he was also a blast to hang out with and gave us great pointers. Both Gene and Jay constantly made sure we were comfortable and having a good time. We caught a number of fish and are already looking into signing up for another trip. Overall, we couldn’t have had a better experience.

My Dad and I went out with Geno down in Deckers. We’re both intermediate anglers with years of experience but not a whole lot of professional training. Geno taught both of us a ton! We also landed some really good sized trout. I’d highly recommend Geno if you book a trip with 5280 Anglers!

I purchased a fly fishing package through LivingSocial and contacted Jay. to set up a date. He was highly responsive, scheduled a date to fish in the future. Jay emailed a week before our date to confirm and provided all the information needed to make for a great day. it was the first time my 15 year-​old has fly fished. It was a day to remember. Jay was extremely knowledgable of the river and provided simple, detailed, and helpful instruction to how we could catch fish. Boy did we catch fish.
My son caught big fish all day. Jay treated my like his own by showing patience, support, and instruction. The day ended with a nice lunch that Jay provided and talked about our experiences on the river.

Ben and Jay are the bomb. Extremely knowledgable and friendly. My first time fly fishing and I caught a 22″ rainbow trout. I poop you not.

Jay and Ben were fantastic! So kind, enthusiastic and ready to teach. They wanted us to have such a positive experience fly fishing that they went above and beyond to make sure we all caught a fish! A few of us caught several. Their lunch was tasty and they went over the top to ensure we were happy and comfortable. I can’t recommend these guys enough! Beyond being great teachers they were just fun to hang with and talk to. There was never a dull moment. I wish I could continue learning from them!

Jay and Ben were great guides for us four complete newbies from Denver. The gear supplied was top notch and the instruction was great. We caught 12 fish between the four of us. They were also very personable and it was very easy to talk to them.

We have been fly fishing with 5280 Anglers since they began three years ago. My dad and my husband went two years in a row, and finally this year, now that the baby is big enough, I got to go with them. My father has been fly fishing the Rockies for 50 years, and he is thrilled with Jay every single time he goes fishing with him. Jay knows the best places, has all the gear, and ensures that you get something. The hardest part for me is knowing what flies to put in, and how to change based on the fish. Jay just does it, and we were really successful. He is also very patient when working on different casts (I had only ever done back casting), and throws out lots of compliments even though I didn’t deserve them. I’ve never caught 20 inch fish in Colorado, but it always seems to happen in the fall with Jay. This time, since there were three of us, we had a second guide Jeremy. He was also great, and fun to work with. Anyone with 5280 will serve you well. My dad observed after we came home that the thing that makes fishing with Jay extra fun is that Jay is genuinely excited every time someone lands a fish. Its not a put on. He gets this little boy glee about it, and its infectious. If you’re looking for a fishing guide, use them. And if you want an absolutely spectacular experience, pay for the private waters. I’ve never fished so comfortably or so well.

I purchased a groupon for my boyfriends birthday since he loves fly fishing and I’ve never been. Our guide Geno was amazing. He was super patient and very knowledgeable about the best parts of the river and specific flies to use for that time of year. We both had a blast and would definitely do it again!

My first time fly fishing was with 5280 anglers, with guide Jay Baichi. Within the first hour of being on the water I had landed two nice trout. Jay really knows his stuff and knows how to put you on fish! Over all it was a great experience, and since October I have gone out with 5280 3 or so times and have had great days catching lots of fish every time! I would definitely recommend 5280 for any body looking to have a great time and catch some fish! 5 stars all the way!

So I lucked into a guided trip (friend broke up with her man and gave me his gift) with 5280 Anglers — to tell you the truth I didnt really know what to think/​expect from a «guided» fly fishing trip in the Rockies; and then I met Gino. Gino met up with us in the early am, he reminded us of our «hangovers» and asked if we had camped out the night prior — we laughed and stated «yes».
As we stepped into the river Gino noticed the flow rates were high, you could instantly see a concern in his eyes (he knew this would affect the feedings, but he kept his confidence and stated «I’ll get you some fish today»). We stood for a few and he simply asked «whats your skill level», Dag said «ok» and I looked up at Gino with a grin and said «teach me». I think «teach me» was the right thing to say to our soft spoken friend from Schenectady NY, Gino laughed and began his journey by my side for the next 12 hours.
I learned more in 30 seconds than anyone else had taught me in all of my years of fishing– fly fishing was simple (mending, mending. mending and having fun). Within the first two hours we were pulling trophy trouts (I mean really really big TROUT). By about hour 9 I got annoyed that Gino was just tying flies for us — so I insisted that he join us. No BS, his first drop and he pulled a 20″ Brown, three drops later another 20″ Rainbow — this man was a Fly Fishing GOD!
If you have ever had doubts about a guided trip, suck it up, admit your foolishness and call up the 5280 Anglers & ask for GINO! You will not regret it. If you are dating a fly fisher person (you like how PC I just was!!!), do not hesitate at buying this for your loved one. This was gift from the ladies to us and we walked back in with grins — no kidding, this was the greatest gift I have ever been given.
Post Script: Bring Sun Screen (Gino will give you some if you ask) but its always good to have your own.

Went first time fly fishing with Tim, what an awesome day! Tim was patient in sharing his knowledge in helping me understand everything from Fly selection to specific casting techniques for different areas of the river. I am an avid golfer, an Tim was able to link the soft skills of fishing g to those of a perfect golf shot. Tim’s really likes helping others. Tim’s enthusiasm, humor and knowledge made a perfect day, and started me on a new passion. Thanks Tim!

Tim Schoenborn was our guide and made our experience entirely wonderful. We caught and released 8 trout between my husband and myself within about a four hour period. He was very accommodating to our needs and his fly-​fishing knowledge as to how to catch those fish made our trip a success. I highly recommend this company for first timers or occasional fishers as ourselves. They provided everything we needed to get on the river. All we had to do was show up and have a great time.

I have flyfished for 50 years and this was my first guided trip. Tim Schoenborn, part-​owner of this outfitter is extremely knowledgeable and interested in teaching what he knows about fishing in the the Colorado Rockies. He will provide whatever is needed in the way of gear, or you can provide your own. He has a variety of areas to fish and I would encourage interested to call ahead and discover the opportunities that he has to offer.
