History
Established in 1973.
Ship’s Hatch began in 1978 with one nautical store in Fairfax, VA. In 1984 a second store opened in Crystal City, VA (within walking distance of The Pentagon). It fast became a military store but retaining the nautical flair. Next year we will celebrate 30 years in Crystal City. We are unique in that we make much of the merchandise in the store. Most of it can be personalized. Our small, mature staff is well versed in «military speak» and can often solve complex problems. Most of the staff has been at Ship’s Hatch for ten years or more (in one case, 21 years!). We are all well versed and «at the ready» to help customers find just the right gift for that special person.

Married, the mother of two and the grandmother of two, Mary Beth has a degree in Psychology. She has lived in the Washington, DC area most of her life and has extended family living here as well. Having never taken a business course, she now finds herself toward the end of a long, successful (assumed after 35 years) retail career. Ship’s Hatch began in 1978 selling WW II Liberty Ship hatch cover tables. Although the original Fairfax, VA store closed in 2008, the Crystal City store is alive and well. It has been a great journey and she has enjoyed every minute of it.
