Arrowine & Cheese

My husband (then fiancé) and I visited this wine shop back in April for a bottle of wine to take home. He actually used to live very close to here (in Ballston); so I wish we had discovered this place sooner back in our dating days! The shop is large and has tons of wine selections! We ultimately went with a sweet white wine (my favorite) and were very happy with our choices. Prices are reasonable and service was friendly! Will visit again :)

Once a go to for me for excellent cheese & wine but, well, the owner’s customer service… or, the lack thereof, has chased me away, I am sorry to say… I, now spend my money where… it is appreciated! i

GREAT wine and cheese selection! Only two things i did not like about this place is the parking and some of the beer was overpriced. I know it is a select craft store but some craft beers, especially VA based craft beers should not be an extra 2 – 3 $ above everywhere else.
Besides that, good place. Stopped by here on a thurs evning to grab some wine and cheese for my buddies house. They were very helpful. Associate helped me pick a Cab wine that was similar to one i frequently enjoyed. Also they rec some manchego cheese for the wine i purchased. I really enjoyed it and if i am in Arlington, I would come back and would get another of their recommendations!

I can’t believe I’ve lived 10 minutes away and frequented this shopping center for almost 2 years without trying Arrowine! This place caters to all my vices — cheese, chocolate, handmade ravioli, not to mention wine! They have a large variety of cheeses and always at least one to sample. The goat Gouda is my current fav. What a wonderful place to purchase gifts as well as a treat for yourself!

Love this place, everyone is very nice and extremely helpful. The prices are higher but the quality is there.

Arrowine is my opinion is the best wine store in Arlington — they have so many things going for them — so let’s jump right into it
1. A wide variety of wine from around the world — not only do they have wine from all the major regions, but they have variety of styles for each region and across a multitude of price points
2. Their staff know was they are talking about
3. The store is well organized — the wines are easy to find
4. I’m not a huge beer drinker — but their selection looked great
5. They do real wine tasting — not the «here is a plastic cup and one wine to taste» — last Saturday I must have tasted 15 – 20 wines from the small glass wine glasses (real glass makes a difference). On Friday — I was there and tasted another 5.
6. They offer a 10% discount on any bottle that you buy from the wine tasting selection
7. There selection of wines for the wine tastings range the price point — they were tasting bottles that ranged in price from $ 16 — $ 60.
8. Parking is a breeze (they have plenty of parking behind the store and on the streets around it — just not in front of the place — the spots disappear quickly)
The only downside that they have is that they don’t have Coravin CO2 replacement cartridges (unless they added them recently) nor do they have wine glasses for purchase. But alas — I won’t ding them for that.

I came for the cheese and left with that and ice cream! I can’t review this for the wine and beer, because I was more interested in the cheese. They had a super helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable staff behind the cheese counter. I came in thinking humboldt fog, but they veered me torwards something better. I also got some raclette. I was super stoked about their Jeni’s ice cream. I don’t have to order online now! So happy I came!

I adore Arrowine! They have the best recommendations for cheese, chaucuterie, and wine for any occasion.

First off — As Steve S says — «If you are going to have featured items specific to one location, you should 1) have separate web sites (click for locations) or 2) emphasize DC STORE ONLY.» I too have been frustrated to the max when told «Oh, that’s in the VA (or DC) store only!!» Hey, when I use public transportation to get to your store– don’t expect me to go ZOOMING to your other store to get that item!
Secondly — yes, the store is clean, has a great selection of wine, cheese beer, specialty pastas and meat, but if one of your employees happens to be a skinny white guy with an attitude, keep him off the selling floor. I was at the checkout when suddenly something hit me with full force on the back of my leg — I turned, did not see anyone but DID see that one of those wheeled plastic grocery carts had slammed into my leg — so I said sarcastically (I could have said worse) «Gee…THANK YOU for hitting me with that cart!!!» And so this skinny guy comes over and angrily says «I WAS coming over to apologize!» (Like an apology would stop the pain in my leg?) When I told him «Go SLOW next time and you won’t HIT anyone!!» he threw the cart in a corner and huffed off talking to himself. This guy work here? Stick him in the stockroom.

One of the things I’m not too tolerant of is when a business’ web site is not helpful in ways that can be misleading. Saw an affordable French Pinot mentioned. When I went by, I was told that that Pinot was in the DC store only. Result: wasted trip and ½ hour of my life I’ll never get back.

The store clerk mentioned, rather unhelpfully imo, that I could go to the DC store, which I didn’t really care for.

As the only place around that consistently sells sour beer, I have to give it 4 stars. Prices are crazy high, though, but that’s to be expected when buying sour beer. I’ll have to return, because from what I’ve seen, there’s no place that has the sour selection like Arrowine!

i love arrowine. i cant remember what brought me in here the first time, but im happy to have discovered it.
it has become a weekly destination for me as its the only place ive found in the dc area (so far) that has unpasteurized cantal cheese, just like back home in auvergne.
theyve got a great selection of cheeses and charcuteries for sure, and they carry ficelle baguettes from leonora bakery which are absolutely delicious. ive yet to buy any wine there, but im sure i will eventually. also, recently i noticed they have all the ingredients needed to make a proper cassoulet… including tarbais beans!
the staff are generally very friendly. i highly recommend this place :-)

I walked in here this evening. The STENCH is abominable. I couldn’t stay for more than a moment or 2. It stinks of mold. I’m a fan of nice wine shops (cheese, etc.), but I couldn’t trust buying anything fresh from here. Some wines were packed in the shelves, others were single-​file. What was better? Single-​file? Packed in? It felt like a wine and cheese flea market.

This place is alright, but it smells bad and looks all dark and dingy. Great cheese, charcuterie, and wine selection; beer selection might be better if it had more room. I don’t give a crap about much else there though, except the olive oil.
Get this though: there’s some dude there in the wine department that came at me one day and introduced himself as Coleman Hawkins; asked me if I wanted to see his saxophone. I told him he could go blow with Bill Clinton since he also had some experience with that curved instrument.
I’m in there twice a week though because their goods are crucial to my lifestyle. Talking to some of the other employees there rounds out my conception of the place as a haven for aesthetes, voluptuarys, sensualists, bon vivants, and all the sundry bric-​à-​brac of the greater metropolitan beau monde.
There was a wacky guy there one day — someone said it was the owner, but they were wrong — IT WAS NOT THE OWNER. The other guy was like Rick Moranis sitting on the shoulders of Crispin Glover sitting on the shoulders of Steve Carell sitting on the shoulders of Jeffrey Tambor all stitched up in a Dennis Hopper costume. He came in all out of breath, stamping his feet and waving his arms around wildly all red in the face and babbling incoherently; all until the sound of the cash register opening and closing brings him back to earth. One would think Godzilla was chasing Mothra through downtown Tokyo with all the commotion, and honestly, it heightened my experience. But seriously, I’m in here all the time for the quality additions their goods and services add to my life, and you should not hesitate to go in there as well. Go in there and discover your inner gourmand!

There is no better place to go for wine and cheese. Arrowine also carries an amazing selection of frozen foods and treats from local and regional vendors. Stop by for a tasting, or pop in for a recommendation from the knowledgable and helpful staff. The wine selection will please every pallet and every pocketbook.

Arrowine & Cheese will forever hold a soft spot in my heart since it was the first place my real estate agent took me when I closed on my first house to purchase some celebratory wine, cheese, and smoked meats to mark the occasion. Like any good wine, cheese, or smoked meat, Arrowine continues to improve with age as I have returned time and time again to gather supplies for house dinners, parties, and the occasional holiday gift for my foodie friends.
Cheese– A treasure trove of artisanal cheeses from farms both domestic and abroad including unpasteurized selections; The guys behind the deli counter are very knowledgeable as well as generous in doling out samples and recently their very own Perry Soulos took home first prize at the 2014 Cheesemonger Invitational, so if you are new to venturing beyond the norm or trying to pick out selections to impress, trust that you will be in good hands.
Meats– an all-​star lineup of thick slabs of pork that are sliced and meticulously arranged and packaged to order, the Jamon Serrano and Jamon Iberico were exceptional and very moderately priced especially if you catch them during a sale. There is also a diverse array of accoutrements including marcona almonds, specialty crackers, quince paste and dried fruits, and various pates and mustards to round out the perfect charcuterie board.
Wine/​beer– They boast a selection of over 350 craft beers including several from local breweries and their wine selection is well stocked and organized by country and type. The owners make regular trips to Europe as well as invite vintners and artisan distillers for local tastings so they not only have the reputation but also the experience to back their product line. Be sure to subscribe to their weekly electronic newsletter to stay abreast of specials which are described in wonderful detail as well as announcements on weekly tasting events open to the general public.
Service– As mentioned earlier, the folks are courteous without being obtrusive, knowledgeable without being pretentious, and professional while still being passionate. While the original location in DC may have the infrequent celebrity or high government official sighting (I’ve heard Owen Wilson and George Stephanopoulos have been known to make the occasional appearance), the Arlington location has more of the local neighborhood hangout vibe where the regulars are known on a first-​name basis and it sits in a little shopping center adjacent to a local bakery and toy store.
Bonus– for those who are too busy to cook or need a last minute meal to impress, they also have baguettes and a refrigerated section stocked with fresh pastas and pints of Jeni’s Splendid ice cream, which uses grass-​grazed milk from a few select farms in Ohio.
An absolute neighborhood gem well worth the trek for any Northern Virginia resident.

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. They have a huge selection of cheese and charcuterie. You could easily spend hundreds of dollars here if you wanted to host a big party/​wine & cheese event. If you find a voucher through Groupon or another site, I would purchase ASAP and gift them to your friends. I love the prima donna cheese, brie (all types), and different proscuittos and sopressatas! They also have a good gelato selection. I highly recommend this place to my friends and readers.

Additionally, their selection of beer is really impressive. I was sent on a friend’s recommendation, and it is now my favorite place to purchase wine and beer (and cheese). The staff is very approachable and friendly — and the in-​house beer and wine experts happily offer a wealth of knowledge. If they don’t have what you’re looking for in stock, they can recommend a very similar item.
Don’t forget to check out the saucisson sec selection as well on the way out! If you’re not careful, you just might end up with a perfectly composed wine and snacks pairing — perfect for book club, a casual get together, or a delicious afternoon in.

Stinky cheese, beer, ale and expensive food. AKA… yuppies paradise!!!
First of all if you are enrolled in any «12 step program» or Jenny Craig” stop reading now. :D. Also I’m not not a super pretentious wine snob. I like a nice bottle of wine but I’ve never gotten sucked into the whole wine culture. The only thing I like to sip swish and spit is mouthwash. I simply do not believe in wasting alcohol.
I went to this place on the fly and while I was wondering around lost in the general area. To my surprise I was greeted by very friendly down to earth staff. One guy who kind of looked like Gerard Depardieu really seemed to know his stuff. How cute is that?! Although they did not have what I was looking for he recommended I try an Italian wine. I’m not too into Italian wines. (I know, weird right?). What I liked about this guy was, he was honest and real. He didn’t try and upsell me to buy something super expensive and fancy, that would probably end up tasting like vinegar and burn my throat. When 9 out of 10 I’d probably be happier drinking a Zima then a $ 300 bottle of grape piss. :p
So back on topic, yeah the wine was good. It was very smooth. The staff at cheese counter offered me samples. However, I kindly declined. Sorry but whenever I’m around Gorgonzola and Parmesan I want to upchuck, I not French enough of that. I definitely do want to come back and go full on Sharknado on some of their honey and chocolate.
Anyway if you’re in the area check this place out! It’s a great place to hit up if you’re trying to choose a gift for a coworker, family member or just enable one of your favorite alcoholics.

Perfect… just perfect… incredible wine display and solid beer section… cheeses galore, specialty crackers, tinned sardines, pâté selection, and an olive bar all make it a very convenient stop… if you show up just before closing time, the very cool, friendly, and professional employees may offer you a baguette to take home free of charge… will keep coming back again and again… in fact, just went there tonight and am enjoying Sweetwater Brewery’s «Happy Ending» imperial stout — a wonderful end to a very busy week at work… park in the back and enter thru the back door if parking lot in the front is full… enjoy!

This wine shop is a great place to find some unique cheeses, pick up some quality bread, and grab some wine of course, but man is it pricy. These days with all the grocery and big box stores selling wine, the only time to really go to a store like this is if you need something unusual… OR… if you need some good wine advice. The staff here does know their stuff, and its one of the only reasons I still go. Great place when looking for a present or something special.
But if you just want some casual wine for dinner, skip it if you want to save some cash.

I kept seeing Arrowine advertised on ARLNow, and finally had an excuse to make it over here on probably one of the worst days ever in a wine shop, Christmas Eve. However, the staff was still extremely patient and friendly, and still took the time to make amazing recommendations. I was impressed.
Wine, beer, and cheese is their focus, but other items, such as Jeni’s ice cream, LeoNora bread, refrigerated pastas, wine accessories, etc., are sold. The shop is decently-​sized and yes, parking can be a bit rough, but it’s worth it. Arrowine is a true gem.

I could spend all day here. Well, maybe not ALL day, but a *good* amount of time.
If you’ve never ventured inside this little gem, do yourself a favor: fight for parking. Its totally worth it.
When you walk in the front door (there’s a back door to the parking lot as well), you’re practically surrounded by wine. It’s a little overwhelming… at first. Towards the back you’ll find the meat and cheese (mostly cheese) counter, and to your right will be the small beer area.
Their beer selection is really good, even for being so small. Lots of local stuff (and a mini tasting if you’re lucky), and a lot of really interesting foreign bottles.
The cheese counter is almost as overwhelming as the wine… at first. Though we felt right at home once the boisterous guy behind the counter started telling us about the samples they had out that day and how they compare to other things they sell. No question was too pedestrian either. My advice would be to take a few samples and then peruse the wines. Every employee Ive encountered here has a fun personality, and they arent afraid to show it.
And attention any ex-​Columbus-​ites! THEY SELL JENI’S HERE. If you’re not from OH and have never heard of this frozen temptress, go to Arrowine and grab a pint. She’s not cheap, but she’s worth it.
I’m excited to get settled into my new place cuz that means Ill have to go shopping for wine for our housewarming and you better believe I’m coming here!

Arrowine was suggested to me by my trusted Beer King Kevin back in Virginia Beach when I wanted to find a store with a good selection of harder to find stuff that the box stores don’t carry.
I was on a mission for a beer from Canada by Parallel 49 called the Salty Scot… a delish salted caramel scotch ale that is very difficult to find around here, as we aren’t in Canada and it is/​was a seasonal brew. So, trusting Kevin with my craving, I give them a call and talk to the «trusty beer guy» and he is not only very impressive, but super welcoming on the phone. And for the people in the DMV area, that is a very big plus coming from this laid back beachy girl… ;-) Most of the time, people are in a rush to tie up a conversation, but he went into detail about the beers he had, the release dates, shelf dates and was willing to hold some of the beer that I had been craving forever!
When we get there, the store has this pungent smell that my hubbs loved… cheese. all kinds, meats of any kind, heart stopping, heart stopping, Italian, German, fatty, lean, you name it… it was the end all of our pay check if we let it. Oh and truffles? How do you like them? In salt? Sugar? Honey? Olive Oil? White? Black? well… you get my point…
Now again, more beer than wine, but the beer they do have is the harder to find imports that we love.
Local owned, delicious food & spices, great beers and wines… what more could you ask for? Enough to keep this girl happy for a long time!!!
