Arlington Women’s Center

The entire staff lacks common courtesy. They delivered my first child via c-​section (not my choice). The doctor made a mistake during the wound closure which lead to a second surgery a few hours later after I bleed out heavily. The second surgery caused me to be away from my newborn for nearly 8 hours after delivery and a very long hospital stay. I repeatedly asked the doctors what happened and finally asked the doctor during a follow up visit for a copy of the report so I could find out exactly what happened that caused the need for my second surgery. I never received the report or any type of explanation. Four years later, I’m about to deliver my second child (with a different practice of course) and when I called to ask for a copy of the report the office manager demanded that I pay $ 21– the price per page. Keep in mind, had the doctor not messed up, I would not need to obtain these records. I’m mortified by the lack of empathy.

The one star is for Karen King, the nurse and midwife at the office. She is very personable, helpful, concerned when needed and really takes the time during the appointment to make sure you don’t have any questions.
The staff is unfriendly at best. Most of the time the front desk admin won’t even look up from her typing while you sign in and hand her your health insurance card. The billing admin isn’t any friendlier and I have been billed totally differently every year. The phone waits are long, the office hours are shorter than most and the phone lines are closed for lunch. Appointments are usually a month out. I have never been taken back on time ever even though I usually do early morning apts. If you ask how much longer your wait will be they give you attitude about how they will see you as soon as they can. I think if you are pregnant they treat you better.
The medical practice is also really antiquated. No online apts, you have to re-​fill out all 3 pages of forms every year, no way to email the Dr. or nurse with questions, no access to your medical records online, etc. I have problems finding time to call the office and wait 10 minutes on the phone so I would appreciate being able to do online appointment scheduling.

I have had a great experience with both the doctors and midwives in this practice. They are very thorough, empathetic and knowledgable. They helped to deliver my son in May and I would recommend them to anyone looking for an ob gyn office in Arlington or DC.

No stars for this place, I feel the need to write this because of the horrible experience I had here, and so many others can avoid this place.
There was numerous occasions I can write about but I’ll mention a few.
When I call ask for information they do not allow you to speak with the Doctor only the supervisor of the nurses. Which is a very rude disrespectful lady that will make you feel bad about asking a question.
Once I spilt some water on the floor at the waiting center. I threw away my cup apologized and sat down than the nurse demanded I grab the napkins and scrub it off the floor when I was 12 weeks pregnant. I couldn’t believe how rude these people were
Once I came in and waited for my appointment for over an hour and then after all this wait they said they are to busy to help me at my appointed time ! They asked if I could come back in 2 hours. I have a job to go to in 2 hours. They didn’t even respect the time I toke to make the appointment and the long drive I made to get their

And finally the worst ever service I called to ask about some cobfusion I had about my pregnancy and the weeks the nurse very rudely said they are busy and I asked to speak with the Doctor instead I spoke with the nurse supervisor a very rude nasty lady. I decided to no longer speak with her. days later I get a letter in the mail and it says they discharged me from services for the consistent questions I asked about my pregnancy
They claimed the nurses work their and they pay them money to do their job so because I called and cared about the health of my child to be while they could be assisting other patients. I had an appointment a week later and had to scramble to find another doctors office while I WAS PREGNANT. They discharged me without having a doctor or anyone in charge ask for my side of the story. Levine me in a bad situation. I was never out of line and very respectful to them. They get annoyed when you care about your pregnancy and health care
The nurse supervisor needs to be replaced
The Doctor in charge needs to be replaced for discharging a pregnant patient without notice
The most horrible care you can ever get I advise all pregnant woman not to get their care here. Your pregnancy is a special time and it’s critical your happy and stress free

So sad, I once was happy to be a AWC patient but holy God has the place backslid over the last few years. The front office staff is rude, it’s impossible to schedule an appointment and even Dr. Crowther (who used to be the only reason I suffered through lesser parts of this practice) was rude, short and impatient with my questions during my last visit. Sorry questions about my miscarriage inconvenienced you all. I’ll be renewing my search for another practice soon…

I am sad to write this review because we are grateful to the doctors and midwives at AWC for delivering our first baby. They are kind, considerate, and have an excellent bedside manner.
However, I WILL change practices for a second baby. I want to echo all the reviews on here about the office nurses, or, as my husband and I called them during pregnancy, The Gatekeepers.
I get that crazy pregnant people call with crazy questions, and that you need someone to filter through what concerns are «phone concerns» and which warrant a doctor. However, three times during my pregnancy I called requesting to see a doctor via the phone for symptoms which to me seemed serious. I would talk to the nurse and found her rude, condescending, and belittling. Each time I hung up with trite advice in my pocket and still concerned. Two of the three times I called I ultimately landed in the ER (the third I just went to my GP) and every time I heard some version of «wait, your doctor didn’t want to check this?!» Luckily, the hospital staff at VHC was able to get me and my baby the help we needed. All three visits resulted in significant, which made me feel less crazy but also made me uncomfortable with the practice.
Our sweet baby made me get over it long enough to starve off a review, but my treatment postpartum has been worse. I feel like as soon as you give birth they just want you to go away as quickly as possible. I sustained significant injuries during birth, and the few times I have been able to muster up the courage to call with a plea to see the doctor, I’ve either been directed to a GP or given a script over the phone with the same edict another reviewer mentioned («try this and call back if it doesn’t work»).
I’m six months postpartum, in pain, and eager for answers. While I’m sure the sweet doctors at AWC would be helpful with my concerns, Heidi & co will make sure they are never heard.

If you like having someone prodding around your genitals with an audience of 3 other «nurses,» this is the place for you! It was like the were treating my room like a clown car. Otherwise, the front desk staff are rude. The calendars don’t open until about 3 months out, which makes it hard to schedule an appointment far into the future. It’s also hard to get an appointment less than 6 weeks in advance. I had to call this place for a mundane issue and they wrote me a script based on what I said on the phone and said «call back in a week if it doesn’t improve.» THANKS. Then I get to the drugstore and it’s just a slightly stronger version of an OTC product. So now I get to use that, it won’t work, and then I can call back again and wait six weeks to get in. Except I won’t, because I’m going to switch to a different office.
Plusses, I’ve never had to wait long but I see one of their midwives, Karen King, and I really like her most of the time. I think those who see the Doctors may have longer waits. Parking is expensive unless you’re willing to park on the street, then you can save a few bucks.

I love the doctors and midwives at Arlington Womens Center. They have always supported me with my birth plans and when those plans go awry, they are always there for me. Dr. Rohn has an amazing bed side matter and I would definitely go with her again if I had to have surgery. Karen and Melissa are awesome midwives and I wish I had them in my birthing room. Their prenatal care was top notch and so warm. I highly recommend this practice.

I went to this place for 2 yearly check ups.
I saw Karen King. She was very nice and personal. But last time when I visit, she did not even perform the check up herself but had an intern did it. I knew the medical condition that I had and asked the intern if she found anything. Needless to say, the intern did not find any problem because she did not do a proper job in checking that area.
Staff are ok, could be not very polite sometimes. And they are extremely hard to make appointment, usually 2 – 3 months in advance. They also seem to care about those who are pregnant.

Service was crowded, doctor basically forced a gonorrhea and chlamydia test on me, even though I have been with the same person for over a year. Then she acted all sketchy after and ran out of the room — made me feel very uncomfortable.
THEN about 5 months later received a bill in the mail for $ 575. The receptionists did not notify me that I was out of their network, which I confirmed with the insurance that they should have told me.
Apparently each STD test was $ 100 (the doctor failed to mention they would cost extra). Upon receiving this outrageous bill I asked her why they kept pushing to give me an STD test when I was 99.9% sure I was completely fine and she said «you’re never gonna know if it’s negative or positive». Uhmmmm… I guess they were never showed the STD pictures in health class!
My pap smear was $ 125 on top of my «preventative care» visit, which was $ 250 (receptionist told me that included a breast exam? Not sure what else a preventative care treatment is a pap smear costs extra).
Long story short, this office is not willing to help retain their customer base and will suck as much money as they can out of you. Will not be returning here.

I have been extremely pleased with the care provided at Arlington Womens Center. I started going to the practice after becoming pregnant. Appointments have been consistently timely. The doctors and staff have been patient with our first time parent questions. I have also been able to easily talk to nurses when I’ve had questions between appointments. One specific incident that left my husband and I extra happy is that we had an issue that wasn’t going to be covered by our insurance. The nurse, Susan, took the time to research alternatives and offered several solutions that we were content with. Even more impressively though, she called the next day and found a way for us to resolve the issue for free. This was above and beyond our expectations.

There is nothing nice to say about the staff at this office. As a new patient I was really looking forward to a positive relationship. Dr. Rossi seemed to lose his train of thought A LOT & repeated himself without completing a thought. His staff — just awful. The person at the checkout gave me a blank stare & told me I was done, when i kept trying to get a script for a mammogram & sonogram. Now a week later, they have no records of the blood tests, the pap smear or the urine tests? Calling in — just gets you routed from person to person who is clueless & not invested in the well being of the patient or the practice. I don’t really know how to even get my results & I’m extremely disappointed now that once again I have to go shopping for a new doc:(. This practice has more patients from medicaid than private practice & its just a conveyor belt experience. :(

I honestly don’t know why this place has such negative comments about the staff. I never have a problem getting an appointment with the midwives. The nurses are professional and nice and were very comforting when I came in the same day because I was worried I couldn’t feel my baby. I’ve been to plenty of OBGYN’s and Dr’s offices in DC and am always shocked by how rude everyone is, especially the receptionists. AWC is nothing like I’ve ever experienced before; all of the receptionists have been very accommodating and pleasant.
One front desk staff even promised to call me as soon as the next month’s sonogram calendar opened (because it wasn’t while I was there) and she remembered 3 weeks later and called me to make sure I got my appt. To me, that’s great customer service. I also like that I can call to speak with a nurse about any issue; they’ve been very patient and supportive so far.
Regarding wait times, the nurses have always called me in on time. Only twice (in 7 months) did I wait 30 minutes to see my midwife. Not the end of the world; I get they are busy and some women have more questions than others. Just recently they called me in early and I was in and out before my actual appt time even started.
I can’t comment yet on billing or actual delivery, but so far I’ve been extremely happy. This is exactly the experience I need while going through pregnancy.

Please avoid this place.
First of all you have to schedule appointments 3 months in advance but wait you cant so you have to constantly call in hopes that they have «opened up» that months calendar schedule.
Had to wait over an hour today for my appointment at which point I had to wait an HOUR for them to tell me that Dr. Rohn would be longer. No thank you.
Called me to schedule and only appointment available in January is a day that I’ll be out of town .
They waste your time and don’t care about your business. AVOID THIS PLACE.
I’ll be taking my business elsewhere and you should too.

I have been going to Arlington Women’s Center for the last 7 years and am about to finish up my first pregnancy (so I can write a review about that portion later).
I see Karen King and she is absolutely FANTASTIC! I have met the other midwives and doctors in the practice who are all pretty great in my opinion, but I am biased since I have been seeing Karen since 2007. She is always wonderful, caring, and a pleasure to speak with. Even when she is busy, I never feel rushed and her calming attitude has alleviated any stresses I’ve had since I got pregnant. Since I’ve been going through my pregnancy, I have been dealing with Melissa a lot as well and she is great too.
Of course the waiting times can be long (as noted in the other reviews) but I have never been to a doctor’s office where that never happens. I personally haven’t had to wait super long more than a few times and usually there’s a good reason such as my doctor was on-​call all night with multiple deliveries.
The front office staff is efficient and nice, no complaints there. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this practice and a few of my friends have already switched because of my positive experiences!

I was referred by a friend to see Dr. Crowther. I called in February and was told that they are waiting for Dr. Crowther to open up her May schedule. The receptionist took down my information and said that she will call me once that happens. 4 months later and still no call, I call their office to get an update. The receptionist informed me that Dr. Crowther is booked and that they are waiting for her to open her August schedule. I told the receptionist that I called months ago and that someone was supposed to call me once she opened her schedule in May. Her response was «well, I dunno who you spoked to, but she’s booked.» Really? How professional! I’ll be finding myself another office.

Wonderful care. Dr Rossi is fantastic with my «old lady» issues, and the staff (receptionists, sonogram technician, and nurses) are warm and caring. I called Monday with a problem and got an appointment for a sonogram and a check up on Thursday. Dr Rossi discussed my overall health in depth. I left another ob gyn practice a few years ago because of too much office bureaucracy. Arlington Women’s Center has none of this. The receptionist even lowered the volume on the radio at my request.

After moving out of the state, I called requested a copy of my mammogram order to be mailed to my new address and paid the $ 10 processing fee. Since I had a change of address, I gave it three weeks but I never received it. I called today and was transferred to five different people in the office, having to repeat the request to have another copy of the order mailed to me each time. Finally, I was connected to Heidi, the person who originally processed the order. She told me she couldn’t mail another copy, that I had to come pick it up and I told her I lived three hours away now. She then admonished me for not having the mammogram sooner since I was seen in January. I didn’t feel I needed to explain the reason I wasn’t able to go sooner and simply asked her to mail it again. She was very rude and on an obvious power trip. She finally agreer to mail it and we hung up.
I then received a very snippy voice mail from Susan, who had obviously just spoken to Heidi about our conversation. Susan informed me that I had a balance which would need to be paid before I could get my mammogram send to me! My question is why wasn’t I told that the first time and why did they take the $ 10 and say they would send it to me? Susan is on a bigger power trip than Heidi from the sound of her voice mail! Why were they able to mail it the first time but now that I had words with Heidi, they are suddenly not able to mail my mammogram order?
From the other reviews I’ve read on here, the office staff is definitely a problem at this practice. They are rude, insensitive, unprofessional and uncaring. DO NOT GO TO THIS PRACTICE!

Do NOT come here for your pregnancy!
Just a few pieces from my experience to hopefully help you —
Wait Time: I have come for four appointments so far and waited 35 minutes, 70 min, 55 min and 45 min. When I was waiting for over an hour, I asked if it would be much longer and the nurse said «There are other patients who have more pressing matters». So make sure you’re prepared to understand that you don’t matter.
Incompetant, Rude Staff: Many examples of this, but I’ll give just one. I requested a prenatal vitamin prescription and brought a print out of what my insurance covers. The nurse said «I don’t need your paper», returned with a prescription. I asked if she was sure the prescription was for one of the brands covered and she rolled her eyes at me and said «yeeeess». When I got to the pharmacy — surprise. Not covered. $ 89 for a VITAMIN! No thanks. Now they want me to schedule another appointment to come in to fix their negligence.
Unnecessary number of appointments: at every other doctor’s office I’ve been to, your ultrasounds and discussions about them with the doctor are at the SAME visit. Nope, not here. They can not figure out how to coordinate their schedule, so they will make you come in once for the ultrasound, then return another day to see the doctor to review the ultrasound. See my note about wait times above and you’ll understand why this is a huge inconvenience… not to mention very uncommon in comparison to more organized practices.
Very short time with doctors themselves: this happens at many practices, but be prepared to feel rushed once the doctor comes in. Dr. Rossi spent approximately 4 minutes with me at my last appointment before being whisked back out the door.

I saw dr. Biggs.
I went in for a first time yeast infection, they didn’t bother finding out what type of yeast and just put me on diflucan for 6 months!
I went to another doctor and they immediately tested for the species of yeast.
And it turns out the species I had is resistant to diflucan (fluconazole) !!! [Written on the lab results]. And for those who asked: Boric Acid was the cure.
My conclusion is that Arlington Women’s Center just don’t care for minor things like yeast infections but they sure don’t mind prescribing medications for 6 months. And in my view this is why certain yeast species became resistant to certain medications.
I am done with this place although my best friend had her babies delivered under their care.
