Arlington Sleep Medicine

Have already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Have a CPAP wanted to try the mouth piece so I went there once. I spent an hour filling out the questionnaire before hand arrived 15 minutes early. Paid my $ 50 copay, spent 35 minutes listening to him read my questionnaire and left with him trying to re diagnose me. To my surprise I received another bill in the mail for $ 300. I figured must be an insurance mistake however when I called I never received a call back until they turned it over to Suburban Collectors who put my job on an auto dialer. STAY AWAY, RIP OFF

Dr. Kaufman was not helpful. At all. Would not recommend.

I have done 2 sleep studies here, as well as a couple of additional appointments (consultation and follow-​ups). Dr. Kaufman has personally and promptly returned my calls on multiple occasions, which is much more than I can say for other doctors I have encountered. He has been kind and seems to genuinely want to help. The sleep technicians have all been friendly, accommodating, and understanding of the inevitable discomfort involved in doing a sleep study. Everyone here seems to want to help and they have met or exceeded my expectations.

I have been a patient of Arlington Sleep Medicine for a few months and have not encountered any of the horror stories that other people describe in their reviews. I have seen both of the doctors in the clinic. Both are undoubtedly knowledgeable and clinically competent. Dr. Kaufman is the more quiet type, Dr. Gofreed a bit more outgoing. Both are kind. I really like that you can easily communicate with the doctors through an online portal.
The receptionist is extremely helpful, though I did run into a few snags with support staff when she was on maternity leave. Thankfully, she’s back now.
I had a sleep study at this office, and the technician was professional and definitely not creepy.
I’m quite puzzled at reviewers who are saying things like, «I had sleep apnea and this clinic wanted to treat it with CPAP.» Well, yeah, that’s what sleep doctors do; not breathing during the night is pretty dangerous. Fortunately, they also have other treatment options if your apnea isn’t bad enough to require CPAP. I felt like Dr. Gofreed laid out all of my options and I am happy with the plan we are pursuing.

Wish I took all the 1 star reviews seriously. As others have said, this clinic’s true goal is to sell you an expensive CPAP machine and bill your insurance provider exorbitant amounts for poor consults. ( Unilocal filtered out 1 star reviews of reviewers who have no friends.)
BLUF: If your problem is sleep apnea, this clinic can set you up with a CPAP (which I have heard has varying results), but don’t expect a pleasant experience with machine or doctor. (I know others who have ultimately just returned the machine altogether.) For those of you on Tricare unable to get an appointment at an MTF, don’t choose this clinic.
Dr. Kauffman was my doctor and I spoke with a variety of their admin staff. I should have noticed there was something wrong when both medical staff and doctor were not only rude and unwilling to listen, but devoted their attention only to numbers they collected (i.e. weight, blood pressure, hours of sleep you think you get, your scores on a nominal scale). If you try to volunteer a narrative of your situation, expect to be dismissed. While going purely by numbers works well for research and publishing in journals, medicine, unfortunately, requires more finesse in the patient interview process, which Arlington Sleep Medicine clearly is not familiar with. It was also clear that Dr. Kauffman could only make a diagnosis if he had nominal scores from a questionnaire that he input into an application on his computer that calculated probability of you either having sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or not enough sleep. (Mostly likely he had a decision or risk analysis program that helps with diagnosis.) There was no room for any other diagnosis or any drop down box for any other kind of situations you could have.
As for the over night study, I cannot believe the accuracy of results that say I slept through the night when I distinctly remembered being awake for a large portion and waking up multiple times due to discomfort and random blinking lights in the room. The technician was at least polite, which is a step up from the rest of the staff.
Good luck to all of you on finding good sleep. I’m still in search of mine. Too bad my multiple appointments here did not get much closer.

AVOID THIS PLACE!!! I would give ZERO stars!!!
I went here because it was walking distance to my house. They book two sleep study apmts back to back, but don’t tell you. If the first person is late and you are on time, they make YOU wait not the person who was late. The doctors do the same thing. I almost left after waiting about ½ hour for the follow-​up apmt with the doctor because the prior patient was late so I was bumped.
JAY KAUFMAN never read my file. He asked me every single question I answered in the pages of paperwork they had me submit before my sleep study. Then he makes you agree with him even if you don’t. For example, he asked «are you sleepy during the day» and I said «no, I’m tired.» He writes, I have daytime sleepiness that can cause car crashes. WTF!!!
Before Jay Kaufman would go over my sleep study, he was showing me the different CPAP devices. I asked if we could go over my study first. He said, no, you need to know the different CPAP options. When we finally got to my sleep study, he argued when I disagreed with what transpired during the sleep study. If I didn’t see a change in the ‘graph’, he would say that one still existed. If I said that the technician said I didn’t sleep for the first two hours, he’d argue with me as if he knew better — only the technician and I were at the sleep study. If I asked a question for clarification, he’d say that it wouldn’t matter as his conclusion is the same. My oxygen level was 99% and he still pushed me to get a CPAP machine.

I wish I could give this zero stars. There are better sleep clinics (I have been to one). It is wrong as someone else also said for just one technician (impolite, in a rush, not well trained) to be conducting these unsupervised. For him to constantly adjust the wires, not letting me sleep beyond 4:50 AM — seriously. The details said the patient should be out by 7 so at least let me sleep till 6am.
The doctors are rude, ‘I am always right’ attitude, not willing to listen. I wish I had seen another doctor who may have suggested another sleep clinic.
The room was ok, the location ok and easy to find.

My experience was very positive. The facility couldn’t be better, and the techs were professional and knowledgeable. The environment is quiet, clean and comfortable.
The review that complained about wanting «different options» was way off base. CPAP is the gold standard for treatment of sleep apnea. Many people have difficulty with it at first, but the other options don’t work as reliably, and are equally difficult for some people. There is nothing wrong with Arlington Sleep Medicine, and I recommend it highly.

I agree with Maggie V: This place sucks.
My experience was that the room was OK, but the technicians are a little creepy. They seem to want to jump into treatment after a short sleep study rather than describing your options. I am not sure that is medically appropriate. I don’t think the technicians are qualified to prescribe treatments.
Moreover, when I had trouble with the CPAP machine, I asked to terminate the session. The technician gave me a hard time, so I tried the machine again. I finally had to insist on taking the machine off. I just told the guy «I don’t care what you say, I am leaving.»
I think it is totally inappropriate to have one person there conducting these «studies» unsupervised. The study itself seemed more oriented toward selling me a CPAP machine rather than discussing alternatives such as behavioral changes, different sleeping positions, or surgical options.
