Apple Valley Unified School district serves over 13,500 students ranging from pre-school through twelfth grade. The district has ten elementary schools, two comprehensive high schools and one K-12 independent study/hybrid/online course school.

History

Established in 1987.

The very first Apple Valley School, built in 1908, was located on the Carroll homestead on Haida Road near the river. In 1913 a new school was built on two acres of property donated by the Westphal family, at the corner of Deep Creek Road and Bear Valley Cut-off. The building was used until it was moved to the site of Yucca Loma School in 1950. It was dismantled and removed in 1978. In 1953, the school became locally governed, rather than county governed, and James A. Woody was named as the first Superintendent. In 1987 the district unified to become AVUSD (K-12) with five elementary schools, two junior high schools, and one high school.
