Finally. I finally made it here during a time it was open. Make It Your Own Boutique is a working studio(upstairs from the coffee shop) run by an enthusiastic owner who nearly had me signing up for classes in something I already know how to do. She was that good. Make It Your Own has handmade gifts from local people, creatively inclined, who probably don’t have enough to open their own shop, but just enough to test the waters in a small setting. Right now, MIYOB has some jewelry, scarf holders made of silver, unique scarves, and some handbags. The scarves and handbags are made by Julie, the owner. She offers sewing classes for ages 12 and up. They’re small classes, or perhaps private lessons, at a very reasonable price. Although we talked specifically about young students, I am sure she’d also be willing to teach adults who want to learn basics. I think it might be like a flashback to high school home economics class, but without the pressure of a grade and the teacher’s pet who’s practically sewing jeans and wedding dresses on day one(you know who you are Roxanne, you show off) while the rest of us are trying to figure out how a needle threader works. Sorry. I digress. This is a cute little place, full of lots of promise, and an owner who clearly loves what she does. If her skills as a sewing teacher match the enthusiasm she had explaining the class goals, I’m confident of the success of the gift I have planned.
