In-Shape: Antioch

Have gone as guests with our daughter and son in law who are members. We live in San Diego and have gone to the same gym (under different owners) for 30+ years. I wish In Shape would come to San Diego! We alternate between the Brentwood location and this one and find them both welcoming, friendly, clean, with a great variety of equipment and lots of extra «niceties“from the large or small towels offered for no charge as well as roomy clean showers complete with a large wall mounted trio of shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner. The Antioch facility has 4 visible w/​plexiglass racquetball courts (no extra charge), and even lends out rackets and balls which they keep (limited supply) at the front desk. This enables us to play a little with our grandsons, who are just learning how to keep the ball in play. Both facilities have indoor pools, but Antioch has a beautiful set up with their outdoor pool that is very family friendly. to enjoy not just a lap swim (though they do have a section for lap swimmers), but a free shape large pool with lots of patio area around it with tables, umbrellas, chairs, lounge chairs and even tented cabanas! Both locations have a huge, wonderful kids zone. Our grandsons love going to «mousercise» with Mom and Dad.

OMG! Best place to work out and stay for some relax time, and lobby is a great spot to have fun and chill. But some time is not clean at all, but still good: D

First off, I use to really like coming to this gym although there are certain rooms that I do not feel comfortable in (weight room-​because there are so many men they look at you like, A. you don’t belong B. because you’ll never get a turn on the equipment you would like to use.) but as it is I now have a bigger issue. I have been a member for quite some time and have never experienced the staff or members treating others so poorly. I specifically had a confrontation with another member that verbally attacked me by not letting me use 1 of the 7 pieces of equipment she and her daughter were «using». Not once did I ever see them use the actual pieces of equipment they were hording. All I needed was a rope attachment to do my bi’s and tri’s. After they were rude to me, I told staff, they did nothing but help me wonder around the gym to find another rope, mind you this is 5am in the morning. I felt as the staff should have approached her and let her know that she needed to put the equipment back — that didn’t happen. So once I got the rope I continued my workout, the whole entire time they were giving me dirty looks so I decided to pause my headphones, sure enough they were talking about how «ignorant’ I was and how «disrespectful» I was to «walk through» their workout area. Never have I came across members that wouldn’t let someone use a piece of equipment they weren’t using or for that matter let me borrow it and I could have given it right back. It escalated from there… I stood up for myself and chimed in as they were talking about me, I’m sure they weren’t expecting that… then they were in my face telling me they were going to «beat my ass». At that point I started walking back to the front to get a staff member, the 2 members started following me I made my way around the front and headed toward the bathroom, when I turned around one of them was standing behind me fueling the situation, the staff they said we all needed to leave but I refused without speaking to a manager or writing a report. Then they insisted too, so they staff member wrote down what he interpreted. This has been on going for about a month now and they have done nothing about it, I feel threatened and not safe to be in the gym at 5am alone when they are understaff in the morning. They don’t feel as if that is enough to terminate the other members so there for I made them terminate my membership. As they stated they gave the members a warning but «don’t see them being members long». I pay $ 200 a month for my membership and training that I would think they would want a good client. Cameron and Morgan the managers of this facility didn’t do much to help. Cameron wasn’t very sensitive from the beginning, Morgan on the other hand acted as if she cared and could help. I called all the time leaving messages that no one returned to just get in touch with me about what was going on. Because of this and lack of communication I ended my membership!
The only positive thing I have to say is if you are interested in training — Beau is amazing, I highly recommend him.

50% of staff at the front desk I’ve come across have been unfriendly to me, but this is just the ones I’ve come across. Gym is overall great but staff could definitely use some work.

By far my favorite gym. Just make sure you avoid going in the later afternoons during the week. It’s packed at that time.

I’ve been coming to this gym for over a year now. At first I was extremely impressed as this is a nice facility with very clean equipment and a variety of machines to use. Some of things that irritate me about this location is that the women’s area isn’t really a women’s area lol there are often gawking men not really working out but paying attention to the women who are. More classes would be nice and when you decide to remodel be quick about it lol they shut down an entire section of the gym for weeks kinda screwed my work out up for a little while. The prices to join are semi expensive an don’t u dare have more than one kid who needs to go to day care 6 dollars each kid yikes

I signed up at In Shape Antioch several months ago. I had multiple health issues and my Doctor recommend I go swimming (best exercise for me). Marela gave me her time to show me some exercise I can do in the Gym and I was convinced that this would benefit me and came back to sign up for personal training. My trainer Beau Vigil started working with me. I would not have come to the gym regularly if I had not had the appointment. The facility is clean and the staff is always availed to help. Thank you Mark and Marela for signing me up and Beau for working with me and around my schedule. Giving all 5 stars without reservation.

I’m a new member of In-​Shape and very happy to be working on being a healthier me. The staff is very knowledgeable and I look forward to my personal training sessions. This is my 4^th week and I feel my body is doing things that I never though it could do.

Facilities are nice and clean, equipment updated and kids club employees are good with children.

This is my default gym. The one that I prefer to go to if time permits. Out of all the In-​Shape facilities I’ve been to, this one is my favorite. The staff at the front are super friendly and efficient. The facility is usually clean when compared to the Pittsburg In-​Shape. Staff is always courteous. Hell, Even the environmental services employees say hello to me whenever we pass each other in the hall. So why the 3 stars? 3 stars because of lack of enforcement of gym etiquette among the patrons and the absolute disregard for care of the equipment. I try to sneak out to this gym after my kids are asleep so I can avoid the typical gym characters. Go to any gym long enough and you’ll notice that you will find the same characters.
The girls that are there for a fashion show and not to work out. The «you’re doing that wrong» guy that I’ve never seen exercise but offers his expert advice to every hot girl in the gym. The boy band group. The Crossfitters that are dead-​lifting with horrible form but making tons of noise so everybody knows that they are in fact part of the cult. The wool ski cap indoors in august guys. Every gym has these and others that are too numerous to mention.
However, the one thing that this gym doesn’t have that every other In-​Shape I’ve gone to has is that one employee that knows everybody and just walks around all day talking to every pretty girl in the place. huge annoyance. That guy at the In-​Shape in Pittsburg, who is a total loud mouth jack ass hit on my wife right in front of my on her first visit to that gym. Had no idea that we were together and just did his best to flirt and hit on her until she finally felt uncomfortable enough to go «Honey, let’s go.» at which point this guy put his hand up and goes «What’s up, bro.» In-​Shape Antioch thankfully is missing this guy! Whew!
Last Sunday I roll into the gym at 6, two hours prior to close to avoid all the characters above. I’m doing a back work out and I’m greeted by the lovely Indian girl at the front desk who is always pleasant and she tells me «Have a great work out» and I plan on it.
First thing that I notice walking into the free weight room is the screaming and the grunting. Actually sounds like two cats having sex in a landfill. But what it turns out to be is two idiots on the decline bench, both wearing over the ear headphones and they are screaming at each other for motivation, but obviously can’t hear each other.
They make their way around the gym making tons of noise, dropping weights, screaming and generally being jack asses. There are maybe 13 people in the weight room at this point and everybody is watching these two. I mean it, everybody is watching. I’m exchanging glances with another regular that I see almost daily and the two of us are looking at each other with total incredulity at the amount of noise these two are making.
Now they move over to the cable crossover device and the show gets good. Mind you at this point there is an employee in the weight room in the squat rack doing her thing and not functioning as an employee. She’s even getting annoyed and you can tell by her facial expressions.
Now the show begins and they attempt to cable cross the stack and they cannot, so what they do is yell at the top of their lungs and then drop the stack on each side so that the handles crash back up into the pulley and rattle around. Five sets each, just like that. You would have thought that a garbage truck just plowed right into the gym every ten seconds. It crossed over from being comical to unsafe and annoying.
I went and asked the nice young lady at the front desk if there was a manager on duty and she informed me there wasn’t. I told her what was going on and she said she would send somebody. Those two somebodys went right to the nice blond girl to ask her for the situation report. By this time these two had moved over to a press-​down attachment and continued their behavior of screaming and dropping the stack without regard for other patrons.
Finally, having had enough, the female employee walked over and had words with them and asked them to please keep it down. I was right next to them when she was talking to them and they were both like «Huh, what? Us?» and then went right back to it. People were walking out of the gym, shaking their heads and looking pretty pissed off.
It was the worst work out of my life. I can’t believe there isn’t a person with some authority present in that gym during operating hours. Additionally, neither of these guys gave a damn about the rules and somebody with some authority should have ejected them from the site. Offenders like this are the reason why other people join gyms and then quit because they feel intimidated and why veterans like me go to other gyms to avoid this crap.

My experience at the In-​Shape gym in Antioch, Ca has been excellent.
I took advantage of my free consultation session that everyone receives upon joining and it has been the best decision helping me meet my health goals.
I met with Marela Aberg for my free consult and I found her to be extremely encouraging and her knowledge helped me figure out what I wanted my goals to be regarding my health. She assisted me in choosing the personal training session package that was realistic to my lifestyle and goals. She continues to assist me with any needs I have after our initial consultation.
Brian Kolo is my Personal Trainer and he is above and beyond excellent. I have had Personal Trainers in my past at other gyms and Brian exceeds beyond any experience I have had.
Brian encourages me to never give up and educates me in what the human body can do. This type of education, which I have never had, has helped me raise the bar on myself to goals that I have never thought I could ever accomplish. It has been less than a month and I see a major differences in my body in such a short time. Seeing these changes and reaching these goals has been so exciting. Brian teaches good safety, explains the physiology and anatomy of the body, always has a smile and works around my schedule.

You know that feeling you get when you find that really good place to eat and you wanna tell almost everyone about it, BUT at the same time you get that Greedy feeling and you want to keep it to yourself? Well … that’s how I feel about a couple things in Inshape.
First, my personal trainer, Brian Kolo this applies to that greedy feeling I was just talking about. lol.
He pushes you!!! but explains the how’s and why’s. He has a military background, that scared the crap out of me when I first signed up. I thought he would be the «all up in your face not very nice drill Sargent type» which to my surprise he was nothing like! He’s really pleasant to work with, he trains you hard, listens to what you’re comfortable with and pushes you from there to where you’re actually surprised you can do more than you originally thought! He teaches you how to effectively workout when you’re on your own time as well. He makes him self available to any questions you may have, even when you’re not in session. Oh, I must add, He’s always on time! Huge plus in my book!
I recommend Brian to anyone that wants to better theirselves. Just dont take my 7pm Thursday sessions! Lol
Now, classes.
They offer an array of AWESOME classes. I was really impressed by this. with the combination of Brian and classes, you can’t go wrong .
First class. Cycle aka spin
There are multiple classes in the day. that fits everyone’s schedule. but PAULETTE’S class in my opinion is THE BEST one. You can actually tell by the long line of her loyal attendees that waits by the door 45 mins before her class starts, I am one of them! it fills up Fasst! (Another greedy feeling. I actually wanted to leave her class out my review since it’s already hard to grab a bike. but she’s really great, so let it be known)
Note: if you do take her class, take note of the people waiting before you, please let them go in first. DO NOT rush the door before the ones that were waiting hours before. That’s just rude**
Next class I highly recommend.. bodypump. this class is also offered many times during the week with different instructors.. my favorite instructor is NICOLE S. She does things a little differently than the others. she remembers everyone’s name in class, she helps you with form, very thorough, very likeable! you get an awesome workout! Her class will kick your butt! But you will definitely feel great afterwards and will definitely come back for more! * that greedy feeling is back, her class fills up fast too! If I tell you all the good stuff, there may not be room for me next time I go. LOL. Again, she’s great so I must tell Unilocal **
Bodypump is an overall great class regardless, like cycle but there’s just instructors that motivates and pushes you more, or I should say is more «fun» than others.
Last but not least my Sunday ritual, Body Combat a really good cardio workout! Ayaba and Sharlena are both great! Highly energized, explains all the moves, and they get you sweating all those calories! A very fun class!
There’s instructors and trainers for everyone’s personality at inshape try a few classes and pick the ones you like. believe me I have tried almost every class, every instructor. (except for aqua. I don’t do water lol)
Everything in InShape Antioch is great! from the friendly front desk people and clean facility, (scale of 1 – 10 it’s a 8.5. it is a gym afterall) there’s plenty of equipments, free weights, treadmills and all that good stuff even on a super busy day you’ll find what u need.
And if you’re germaphobe like I am, there’s all these disinfectant sprays everywhere so you’re good!
Oh Kids zone, love it! The ladies in there are awesome, my kids have fun when they’re there. A peace of a mind knowing your kids aren’t being bored out their minds while u work out

I moved to Antioch about 2 years ago.
Finding a place to work out that would be tailor fitting to my schedule and training needs was pretty hard to find, until I checked out In-​Shape in Antioch off Lone Tree Way.
I personally steer-​away from reviews online just because I heavily rely on my own personal experience. This Antioch facility is in a prime location, great training equipment and professional staff. (I appreciate the little things: Smiles, Hello’s, pleasant gestures) This place welcomes you the moment you set foot… so, check it out.
Although I have been an athlete for most of my adult life, I believe that no matter where you are in life and what you are doing… there is always room for personal improvement. I say this because I have been a member of this location for a little over a year. And the workouts, training knowledge that I have acquired through personal experience was not enough to achieve my personal goals today.
I approached a Training Manager named Marela
(always address a Leader/​Manager in my opinion, how they carry themselves and respond to you — That energy will be projected to rest of Staff)
I must have stopped 5 or 6 times at her office before making a decision in hiring a trainer. And not once did I feel Rushed or ignored. Never felt the Pressured about purchasing sessions, instead I received valuable information and the feeling that the door would always be open if I ever wanted to pursue professional workout /​training sessions.
I’m approaching my 4^th week of training sessions. and in that short period of time… I’ve begun to see my transformation into the athlete physique that I have been seeking for a whole year. Marela (Manager) lined me up with a Trainer that has been consistent with all the aspects of consistency, a diverse yet cohesive workout routines that maximize my range and motion and ability to increase agility & athletic performance. Not going to tell you how old I am… but I will tell you that I’m beginning to feel like a Champion.
The trainer that I’m speaking of is a young professional with a genuine interest in helping people. If you are looking to work out, improve your health and gain respectable knowledge on how to use equipment properly, line up with Patrick Green. He has surpassed all of my expectations and I will continue to follow his workout vision and will definitely refer my friends and colleagues.
In-​Shape in Antioch, you have my respect.

This is a great place to work out. Great trainer I would recommend getting a trainer from this gym, the trainer I had was great I wish I could have keep my trainer Steven. Great place to work out.

I absolutely love the child care staff, they are super friendly and my son is comfortable and has a lot of fun there leaving me the time to focus on my work outs.
The locker rooms are clean and plenty of day use lockers are available during the times I go. Bring a lock to secure your belongings.
Most of the equipment is in good condition with the exception of some of the cardio equipment functions not working such as the heart rate monitor but other than that everything else is in good condition.
The outdoor pool is a lot of fun for the kids and relaxing for the adults with the cabanas and lounge chairs.
Overall it’s good athletic club and family friendly

This review is mainly for the front desk staff who are absolutely horrible and rude! If it was not so close to my house I would not come here. I don’t understand how every single day they can be so rude and bitchy. Also the tanning beds always shut off before I am done and have to call them to reset it, and they give me attitude like I’m the one that has done something wrong. Other than that the gym has plenty of machines, if I didn’t have to deal with the front staff then this place would be amazing, maybe I should just cancel my tanning so I don’t have to talk to them, ever!

Awesome facility! Great place for a family or just yourself. And… They have Les Mills classes!
Just make sure to bring your hair dryer!

The chairs in the waiting lounge needs some cleaning or probably replacements they all look filthy.

Awesome gym! Go see Harvey, he will take great care of you. I travel for work and always have to look for a good gym on Unilocal to go visit for whatever city I am in for the week and I can not say enough about this place. Super clean, all kinds of equipment, free weights, no shortage of cardio machines, friendly staff, towel service, the locker room feels like you’re at a spa or resort or something. Wish I could stay longer to check out the pool.
I’m from Bellevue, Washington and my home gym is David Barton Gym so I’ve been told I’m somewhat of a gym snob and my standards for a gym are very high but this gym truly blew me away. I’m surprised it doesn’t have a higher rating on Unilocal so more people can come here. Again, ask for Harvey, he’s the man!

Ok I can’t let this go. I have posted this review on all sorts of review type websites such as consumer reports, google, yahoo, and will continue to do so! I also called and emailed In Shape’s Coporate office and gave them an earful. Corporate did tell me that they would forward my message to the Area Manager. Yeah right! I did get a default message a month later on both Unilocal and Consumer, from «management» asking what they can do to make my experience better and if I can be contacted. I responded– same day– and gave them my contact info.
I HAVE YET TO HEAR FROM I SUCK (IN SHAPE) so what this is telling me is that if the public (you) should ever read my review that it can be noted on my review page that they «tried» to reach out. Let me tell you that NO ONE HAS RESPONDED TO ME SO THERE IS NO REACHING OUT.
I am sure that lame ass HASSIB is still working there turning down new customers. This goes to show you the level of customer service at this third rate gym.
