Quality Alterations

Lucia (Quality Alterations) is the only tailor in Ann Arbor I’ll go to. She is a wonderful person and does such great work that there’s no reason for me to go anywhere else!
The first time I went to her, I brought in a pair of dress pants to have the thigh area loosened. (I got that pair of pants from a family member and they had previously been taken in.) I was worried they wouldn’t turn out right (for some reason I assumed it would be a difficult alteration) but when I came back two weeks later and tried them on, they were perfect!
Then I brought her another pair of dress pants a few weeks later to have the waist and seat taken in. Again, they were perfect.
I am moving out of state so unfortunately I can’t give her any more business, but anytime I’m in Ann Arbor Lucia will be the person I take all my alteration work to.
I highly recommend taking your business to her as well!

QA was enormously helpful in getting my suit ready for my brother’s wedding. Idiotically, I didn’t go in until the week before I needed the suit ready. The woman there was able to work with me to figure out a timeline that worked, actually called a customer in order to ask if it was okay to prefer my alteration, and ultimately saved my butt. And the suit turned out great!

Quality Alterations has done a lot of work for me over the past year, mostly pants hemming. I ask her to duplicate the factory hem and she always does a fantastic job! Turn around always one week. Also very nice and professional. Good location, fine hours of operation. I love having pants that fit me perfectly.
Having had alterations done by many other shops in the past, I do have one hangup. She charges me $ 15 to hem one pair of pants, which is high. She does seem to be an expert seamstress and I do understand Ann Arbor is a more expensive area to run a business. But I would appreciate at least some kind of loyalty discount after the first six items I bring in. Not to mention I always pay cash. I’m told hemming is easy money, and overcharging for this particular service is unfortunately incentivizing people to go elsewhere, where they could get the same service for $ 10.

I can’t give anything less than 5 stars to this place.
The woman who owns (?) this place saved me from the biggest pinch. I flew in for a wedding, and discovered the afternoon of that the zipper on my pants broke. I checked Unilocal for any places open in Detroit, and there were none open on Sunday that could do a same-​day zipper repair.
I called Quality Alterations and the woman told me to come down and she would be able to do it. Mind you this was at around 2 PM, and she probably thought I would arrive in like 10 minutes, and they close at 4:00 on Sundays. Unfamiliar with the area and with a dying phone, I arrived at *3:15*. She STILL took me in and didn’t charge an expedited service fee.
Mind you she was about to go on vacation and had a flight later that same day, and she ended up staying after closing to fix my zipper. Feeling absolutely terrible and indebted, I tried to leave a nice tip, but her kindness and help were truly priceless.
If I’m ever in Michigan again, this is the place I’ll always try to come back to. What a life saver.
(By the way, while I was waiting I overheard her talking with a fussy customer on the phone, and she offered them a total refund for whatever they were complaining about. And she did it all with such calm and poise. Please be kind to this lady. She deserves nothing less.)

I had 9 pairs of my husbands pants altered here. They had them done in 2 days with out charging extra. They are fast, efficient and the quality of the work is amazing. I would recommend this place to everyone

I visited Quality Alterations on numerous occasions for my wedding dress alterations and each time I received the highest quality of service. I visited due to the shop’s excellent reviews on Unilocal and I’m so grateful that I did, because they did an impeccable job hemming my complicated dress, as well as altering the shoulder and removing the train. Furthermore, the price was certainly more than fair.
I’m so glad to have found an alteration shop in the city that I can trust!

Seriously the sweetest lady ever! So nice and such good quality work. Got my prom dress altered by her two years in a row and sent my friends here as well. My friends dress ending up having an issue after the alterations, which wasn’t Lucia’s fault but she fixed it for free anyways. Lovely woman, would definitely recommend.

I chose Quality Alterations for my wedding gown alterations because of the positive Unilocal reviews and location. I was not disappointed! I’m not originally from the area, so I didn’t have any experience with alterations in the area.
I took the dress in around 6 weeks prior to my wedding and had 2 fittings before picking up. I had the dress taken in and some mesh sleeves completely taken off. The prices were what I would’ve expected, I was about $ 350 for the bustles, taking off the sleeves, taking in at the top & pressing. She was extremely professional, extremely efficient and everything looked great!
I know of others who have taken their dresses to bridal shops and paid just as much, but then had issues with the dress.
Everything held up great all night and I was so comfortable in my dress. I had no problems with the appointments & everything was ready on time.
While I was picking up my dress another customer came in with an immediate repair for a dress she needed the next day, she didn’t hesitate at the request.

I have been going there for years with all of my alteration needs. The owner is always very helpful and provides high quality alterations very timely.

Lucia and her team are the best around. I have never written an online review before, so that should give you an idea of how happy I was with Quality Alterations. I tried on my wedding dress 2 days before the wedding and not only was it inches too big, I was unsatisfied with how the top was fitting and wasn’t sure what to do about it. I brought it to Lucia and she listened to my concerns and genuinely cared. She rebuilt my dress in a day and it fit like a glove — wedding saved! I will never go to another tailor. A few people have commented about their prices — the prices are actually quite reasonable when you consider the high quality work that they do. The storefront is no frills, but don’t let it fool you — this is the best alteration shop in SE Michigan.

Everyone says that it is a bit expensive, but still gives five stars. That’s right. We’re willing to pay a lot for good meals, beautiful houses, relaxing vacations, and many other things we consume and enjoy everyday. So, why not pay a little more for the things in which we constantly present ourselves to others?
I had my shirts, a suit, and trousers done by Lucia. I don’t care whether she personally alters my clothes because I trust her decision in hiring the right workers who have done amazing jobs on my clothes. In the end, she is a problem-​solver, exactly knowing what to do in order to improve how we look in clothes.
This is how Lucia handled my concerns:
1. First and foremost, she asked me what I wanted.
2. Then, she used her expertise to draw limits on what she can do and what she can’t do. We as consumers do not have full knowledge about tailoring. For instance, I wanted my shirts to be slimmer, but being too slim would have made me look ridiculous. Lucia advised me on this wisely.
3. Lucia makes her pricing criteria clear. You decide whether you want to get her services depending on the prices she suggests. Sometimes, it is not worth tailoring a cheap baggy shirt.
4. She promised me a deadline, and I was able to pick up my stuff on or after the promised time.
Now, let me talk about the results. All of my tailored clothes look like expensive Italian products. In addition to the excellent look, they fit me perfectly well. Lucia encouraged me to try them on in the shop. I was very satisfied with the results.
I am coming back to Lucia whenever I need to get sometime tailored. I believe in the value of establishing and maintaining trust with a tailor. Someone on Unilocal complained that Lucia charged $ 20 for sewing a button. Guess what? If you brought over $ 200 of business to her, she might have done it free of charge. You can’t expect discounts and free services when you’re just a new customer to a tailor. You give loyalty in exchange for excellent services Lucia provides. And, you may get a little more from her.

I have been taking clothes to Lucia for 6 years. All of the alterations have been meticulously done and always on time. As Hunter Y. says, Lucia is honest and tells me like it is. I appreciate that. To Mike H.: Lucia is Romanian and not Russian. Your derogatory comments about her and her employee were both racist and uncalled for.

I don’t know much about tailoring, but I know what a suit should look like. I spent over $ 100 just getting a jacket tailored and pants hemmed. The jacket pulls in the middle when buttoned, despite repeated trips back up there to get it fixed. The back of the collar has a lump from the not so perfect seam. When asked why putting the buttons on the sleeves cost $ 20, the Russian woman said that it was because they take time to get it perfect. They were crooked and some were too close together, so they push together, causing some to bump out (not lie flat). It was a battle I decided not to pick.
The quality of the work, which was indeed poor, is not the only problem. It was clear that a Chinese woman did the work for me, not the Russian woman that everyone seems to be talking about. That’s fine. But, I expect it to be done right, especially after multiple trips. My real issue is that the Russian woman acts like its fine when it clearly is not. I would have no problem if she said «Oh, I can see what you’re saying. No problem, we can fix that.» Instead, she just sort of acts like «Whatever. Tell me what should be different and we’ll half-​ass it again.»
I came here based on the stellar reviews. I really don’t know what everyone else is talking about. This was terrible, and not cheap at all. I think my suit is ruined. I’m sure a quality tailor could fix it, but again, I don’t want to spend another $ 100 on a $ 500 suit. And, I certainly don’t want to bring it back here for another three rounds of wasting my time and money. I would avoid this place.
EDIT: Had Lucia introduced herself at any point in our interactions, I would not have had to refer to her as the «Russian woman.» I did not intend that to be spiteful. I was never given a hand to shake or a name.
The sleeves of my jacket were not shortened. Is $ 100 still a modest price? It was over $ 120 actually. And, the work was poor. In addition, when I attempted to get things fixed, I was never given any indication that Lucia or her employees actually took accountability for the mistakes. After a few trips up to Quality Alterations without getting things right (and not getting any indication that they were taking me seriously), why would I spend more time (and potentially more money) coming back to try to get the suit right?
I still have that suit. I still wish it fit right. I still wear it when I need to, but I never go out of my way to wear it. When I do wear it, I can’t button it because looks terrible buttoned. The buttons on the sleeves are still, unfortunately, crooked. I’m not convinced, however, that the solution is to bring it back to Quality Alterations for another round.

It was a little more expensive than I had hoped, but it was MORE than worth it. She made a suit that didn’t fit (I was too chubby) expand out and fit perfectly.
AMAZING WORK. I’m taking the rest of my suits there soon!

Lucia can make a cheap suit look like a million bucks, and a $ 4000 Tom Ford look like it is worth every penny. And if a jacket can’t be tailored the way I want it to look, Lucia is honest and tells me like it is; she doesn’t try cutting the jacket and risk ruining it.
Also, Lucia tailored my shoes. Can’t get better than that.

Over the past year… I have brought more than 100+ garments to Lucia, for myself and my husband. We couldn’t be happier. I like Lucia so much! She’s angelic. Their work is very very precise. She knows what to do far better than us, the customer, and the clothing comes back perfect. We have done men’s shirt sleeves, dresses, silk women’s slacks, and many suits. Best place I’ve been to.

I never write reviews about anything, even if I had a bad experience, but I wanted to stop by and write something because I am amazed with Lucia’s work.
She is extremely professional and courteous and her work is impeccable. I took her my wedding dress, which was 3 sizes bigger because I bought it as a sample, and she fixed it so well, it looks custom made. She also added a bustle to the dress and made it look even better!
I highly recommend her. I only have good things to say about her. And also, her prices are very reasonable! I’m so glad I went with her, even though the bridal salon I visited recommended a different seamstress.

I brought a baby blanket I knit for two friends of mine who are having a baby in the fall to Lucia to have a piece of fabric sewn onto the back of the blanket to hide the mess in the back from the colorblocking work. She helped me figure out the best fabric to use that would make it easier to back the blanket and that would look the nicest. I had no clue how to sew the fabric to the blanket, but Lucia found a way! And it turned out looking AMAZING! The parents-​to-​be are in love with the finished product.
Lucia was so nice about letting me know that she had never done something like this, but the final result looks professional and the price was very reasonable. I will definitely be coming back to Lucia for all my non-​conventional (and conventional!) alteration needs.
I also ditto everyone else about how nice and sweet Lucia is!

Went in to get 2 suit jackets taken in, got them back a week later and they fit perfectly. I thought the price was reasonable, and I got some Romanian language lessons tossed in for free. The owner of the alteration shop might be the sweetest person I’ve met in Ann Arbor.
What is probably the best thing this place has going for it is that there is a Chipotle about 50 yards away, so you can drop off/​pick up your stuff AND get a burrito in one trip. Can’t beat that.
