History

Established in 1991.

SafetyGirl has a unique 24 year history. Tanya Brown is the Curious Executive Officer, at the age of 17 she was a single teen mom going to night school and running her own home business selling lingerie.

A few years later she incorporated safer sex merchandise including adult toys and novelties.

At 20 years old she opened her first retail shop in downtown Ann Arbor. During the 90s, Brown was a sex educator and public access television host and producer. She pushed the boundaries with her award winning underground cult hit T.V. series, Get Curious With SafetyGirl. SafetyGirl educated and entertained collage students about safer sex with fun and upbeat lectures and provocative interviews.

Brown calls the boutique her «Girl Cave.» «It has everything I love, ladies vintage lingerie, sexy shoes, accessories, fishnets and clothing along with a massive collection of fun adult toys, lubes, oils, games, bondage wear and novelties. It also has local art, skulls and hula hoops, and more.

Business Owner

Brown studied human services, psychology and human sexuality. She became a certified HIV AIDS testing counselor and helped pilot safer sex parties for the HIV AIDS Resource Center HARC, in Ann Arbor, MI. She received her Bachelors from Eastern Michigan University in 2002, majoring in Telecommunications and Film with a comprehensive minor in Communications.

During the 2000s Brown left a traumatic 2^nd marriage with her baby girl, after living in a Domestic Violence shelter and temporary housing she reemerged back on the local Ann Arbor public access television station as «YpsiGirl» a tutu wearing, pink haired gal about town, showcasing the night life, local business’s and college scenes around Ann Arbor & Ypsilanti Michigan. She was awarded the 2011 Community Spirit Award through the city of Ann Arbor, Community Television Network.

As if by magic along with the help of a dozen friends, Get Curious With SafetyGirl was reborn in the lower level of Bongz & Thongz downtown Ann Arbor.
