Seeds, deck furniture, cast iron pans, mason jars, tomato starts, potting soil, Filson vests, and a cup of coffee to sip while you shop. Stellar.
The drive-​through is shaded, which is a huge win during hot summer dirt pickups. Bike parking is a little spotty but not usually full; I usually pick up birdseed and other medium-​sized things that way.
One recurring problem: The bulk-​dirt-​and-​seed guys occasionally try to railroad you into certain purchases — on my last visit to buy topsoil, I had a 5-​minute fight with the guy who really, really thought I should buy pearlite and peat instead. Those are fine things, but not what I asked for; just sell me the topsoil, please.
It’s great to have a place like this in the middle of town; I really don’t want to have to organize a car and drive out on Jackson Road just to get some birdseed and potting soil. And I like browsing the Le Creuset while I pay.

It’s become a habit to visit this store every time I’m downtown. I’ve always been approached by a staff member asking if I need help. They’ve always been friendly, knowledgeable, and really down to earth — easy to talk to. I enjoy visiting their small greenhouse and admiring the orchids and air plants. I also appreciate their selection and knowledge of organic gardening tools. This was the only place I could find cocoa mulch when I wanted to try it out.
Downtown Home & Garden is also on my list of nurseries to visit when I am shopping around for rare herb seedlings in the spring. I’ve been surprised with their selection. I think I got Lemon Basil and Ginger Mint last year.
As other reviewers have stated, I appreciate that they stock the high quality stuff. I’ve been disappointed with garden tools I’ve gotten from big box discount stores — I always manage to break them. It gets expensive replacing them… so I bit the bullet and pay a little extra for tools that won’t break every year. Worth it.

This place is fantastic. I stumbled in when my brother was visiting me from NY. He’s a big Filson fan who visits the store in NYC almost every week. He says the selection and prices here are the best he’s seen, better than online. While he browsed the clothing, I checked all the rest of the selection of kitchen supplies (Le creuset!) and garden supplies. The coffee bar is great, the drive through is an awesome concept which I will be taking advantage of shortly. And the staff are so friendly and knowledgeable.

Great place overall. Bought a number of oddball items there including a ground hog trap, bird feeder items, and some plant boxes in recent years. Great selection of high quality housewares and cookware. If I was looking for an odd kitchen item, Id be going there first for selection and quality. Usually everything is sold with a smile and a story, that alone is worth paying a little more for. Couple that with the lunch carts in the summer and the beer garden and this place is close to ideal.

5 stars for the excellent customer service in the garden department (and free parking)! After leaving another nursery that was unable to help me, I brought in my houseplant that was starting to develop brown, fungal-​looking spots for some help. James was quick to greet and assist in identifying the culprit (rust fungi), finding the appropriate fungicide, and repotting my plant for FREE! They have a wide selection of pots, including self-​watering, that are reasonably priced. The greenhouse-​looking store and warehouse are filled with tons of unique home and garden goods. Will definitely be back!

We just moved to AA and needed (well, wanted) to purchase some outdoor furniture. Both of the sales people that helped us were very helpful, without any hard sells. They had a good selection at different price points and we ended up purchasing a french set and two adirondack chairs w/​foot rest. What really pushed our experience from a 4 to 5 star was that they assembled and delivered the items that same day at no extra charge, which we really appreciated it.
Great service, friendly staff and we’ll be back and will recommend!

Sure — it’s pricey on some things, but it’s reasonable on plants, seeds and gardening tools and has Louis, a sweet orange tabby to boot. They’ve also got an inexpensive/​good cup of coffee and Zingerman’s bakery goods. There are a number of really unique and fun kitchen gadgets and crockery — I got my apple peeler here and will often buy a piece of the hand painted Polish pottery for one of my colleagues who is a big fan. I’m surprised by the comments that someone here was rude or short with a customer. My office has been down the street for over a decade and I’ve never encountered anyone there that has been less than helpful and welcoming.

This is a wonderful store. I cannot help but stop in whenever I am on this street even if I originally had no intention to come. They have very high quality home and garden items, as well as a very cute «kid shop» with fun and hard to find elsewhere little toys. They also have an interesting selection of locally themed books. I have found the staff to be immensely helpful, despite them being quite busy most of the time I have been shopping. I absolutely love that you can pull right into the store with your car and have items put directly into your trunk, which comes in handy when purchasing large or heavy items. I watched Lewis the cat stalk a spider this morning, it was highly entertaining.

I will never, ever forget the rude service at this store. Don’t shop at this store. I sure hope they don’t have this short review taken off of Unilocal.I will watch and see, and then I will Unilocal again and again to make sure I let everyone know not to shop here… store might be cute but staff was horrendous and I will never forget it.

We drove all the way just to pick up a German spaetzle press. The original one by Kull is hard to find for a good price and here they were. We emailed them ahead of time and they kindly placed it aside for us. They are a very busy store specializing in gardening supplies but with a nice selection of European housewares. Excellent place to browse on the weekend. Staff are busy but very courteous.

Really friendly people+1 adorably lazy cat that sleeps on the bench. They had lots of gardening things here. Bird seed. Kitchen stuff. Bird houses. Plants. Seeds. Gardening books. Some things were a bit expensive, but it was still fun to browse around. They even had bread and coffee!

Really taken by their ‘home’ half, not quite won over by their garden half (yet).
Their ‘home’ half is this store’s greatest asset. Whenever I have a new cooking or baking project, I come here. Everywhere else in Ann Arbor fails me but Home&Garden comes through with top-​quality, specialized kitchenware. There are meat grinders, real cookie sheets, cooking utensils, etc. Every time the store has everything and exactly what I need. Most kitchen appliances are manual, i.e. not electric. Rustic cooking and baking is where this store is at. And I like it!
Speaking of going back in time, they have a surprisingly good little collection of retro (1920s-​1960s) hats. It’s completely odd and unexpected. But there it is. There are also wooden children’s games, boots, pastries, Polish pottery, greeting cards (with birds on them), and so much more. I mean, they even have corks, for goodness sakes. Just corks. Hanging out. Three sizes. Just in case.
I stocked up on gourmet vegetable seeds for the spring and the salesperson was willing to help a helpless n00b like myself (yea, I killed all my seedlings last year without even knowing how it happened). I’m ready for some sweet, spicy, crunchy, and bitter veggies this year! I will succeed — and they will survive.
So, their garden side… Not as impressed with it thus far. I bought a bunch of indoor plants here in the summer and found them at home depot for half the price. But I also found some gems that I couldn’t find anywhere else. But they do have the best potting soil for the best price I’ve found anywhere ’round town.
Of course, the star of the shop is Louis, the orange tabby cat that reigns supreme. If you are out late at Old Town or the diner, you’ll see the little man on the prowl after hours. Otherwise he’ll be there when you least expect him, under a chair or sitting in front of the checkout counter.
The selection of home goods is limited but of high quality. Good selection of seeds and big healthy bulbs. Some overpriced plants. Not sure about the soil, yet. Definitely worth a stop in to explore, though. The book’s contents are different from its cover and you’re sure to discover something you never thought you’d find here.

I love any store where I can get tulip bulbs, a new bird house, a winter hat shaped like a Christmas tree, a new cookie sheet and a loaf of Zingerman’s bread.
Yep! You can get all of the above and so much more at Downtown Home & Garden. Tons of good gifty things for those who like gardening or puttering around in the kitchen, some fun off the wall gag gift type stuff like the aforementioned hat and more, etc, etc. I just love this shop and could browse here for hours. Admittedly I rarely buy anything because as much as I fancy myself a green thumb I just can’t get it together and I’m such a kitchen equipment junkie I pretty much already have everything they carry but still! Love! Love coming and looking at the flowers, love scouring the shelves for something new that I don’t yet have, watching the seasons change both from outside the store and inside via the seasonal displays… awesome awesome. A little pricey, sure but great for gifts and little splurges now and again.
Also love that they carry treats. Every so often I’ll just be walking by and think to myself «I would like a pastry.» And I’ll walk in and get a Zing pastry. How good is that?

This is one spot I return to again and again when in need of a special gift. As is mentioned, prices here are slightly higher than your standard garden store, but not by that much — and the service and selection are great.
From bonzai tree to orchids to herb garden starters to seeds, you’ll find plenty of intriguing greenery to suit a variety of tastes. The garden/​outdoor furniture and décor here all seems high-​quality, and you’ll find very practical things you may not have seen before either.
This last time, I spotted some very simple, colorful solar-​charged lanterns. There is also a small selection of cards/​stationary — some cool letterpress items (though I always wish there were a few more cards).
The home side also has plenty of gadgets and cooking-​related items for the avid cook or baker — and there’s also a small bread/​bakery counter with Zingerman’s goods. For friends who love gardening or are in nesting mode, or for parents or relatives who just appreciate unique gifts, this is a worthwhile stop.
Some days, they even fire up the big green egg smoker (new ones also for sale) and you can smell roasting meat for blocks!

Expect to pay more for your items here than other gardening locations, but also expect to be pleasantly surprised by their selection! They offer unique kitchen items from around the world and a great sunhat selection. Allow yourself plenty of time to explore this store!

An Ann Arbor institution? Yes — but mainly a great shop! Nice selection of kitchen ware and gardening supplies, tulips, bulbs, and orchids. I work about a block from the shop and I probably buy Zingerman’s bread there more than anything else ’cause it is so convenient. They also sharpen knives.

High quality merchandise and high quality service:
This store epitomizes Ann Arbor – or the way AA stores SHOULD be. The merchandise is selected with exquisite taste and is both beautiful and durable. The garden equipment includes both classic and very uptodate items. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The store has special jam tasting, tomato tasting, pickle tasting events, as well as special holiday occasions. Conveniently located with its own parking lot and a drive-​through area, as well, there is also Zingerman’s bread for sale! Check out Lewis the huge marmalade cat guarding the store.

I usually come for the garden stuff but end up finding something I can’t live without on the kitchen side. One of the places to reliably find canning supplies in Ann Arbor, right alongside the gourmet kitchenware. Good place to shop for home– or garden-​related gifts. Make sure you say hello to Lewis, the large orange cat who lives on the premises.

This is more of a home-​and-​garden botique than an actual home and garden store.
Lots of expensive benches, trellises and decorative things that you can stick in the ground. You can get supplies like soil, pots and bulbs if you want to do some gardening. The indoor area of the shop also has housewares and books about gardening and cooking.
I knew I was in the wrong store when I saw the display case with zingerman’s pastries. Maybe it’s the right store for a lot of people who live close to downtown.
I like to think that I’m getting a lot of work done when I do something outdoors, so I want it to involve five or ten yards of mulch, a pickup truck full of pavers, or a dozen bags of concrete. You won’t find any of those things here. It’s a very precious little store.
