All Star Driver Education

Do not take your road test here! Especially if your instructor is Carol Lachaterian.
My sister took her road test her. She did everything perfectly, even according to her instructor save the following:
1. Forgot to signal when she left ramp on highway. (¹⁄₁₀) people do this in real life.
2. Did not yield to a pedestrian. Pedestrian had not even noticed he could begin walking and was on the left side of the intersection and the driver was turning right. Plenty of time before the pedestrian would have reached even the left turn lane.
That’s it!
Two measly mistakes that are extremely debatable and Carol did not pass her for her exam. I vehemently believe that this woman discriminated against my sister, whether it was based on her age, height, or even race.
In Michigan, «Vehicles must yield the right-​of-​way to pedestrians within a crosswalk that are in the same half of the roadway as the vehicle or when a pedestrian is approaching closely enough from the opposite side of the roadway to be in danger. Pedestrians may not suddenly leave the curb and enter a crosswalk into the path of a moving vehicle that is so close the vehicle is unable to yield. Pedestrians list yield the right-​of-​way to vehicles when crossing outside of a marked crosswalk at an intersection.» — this was extracted from the National Conference of State Legislature,
. This source asserts my claim. This woman is in the wrong and must be brought to justice.
This goes on top of her bitter attitude and horrible customer service. No hi, nothing. License and registration like a cop. And I’m not going to pass you because of this goodbye and gets out of the car.
Smh if you hate your job don’t take it out on others. And we’re probably not going to get a refund because of this ridiculousness. Definitely doing this road test at a different institution.

This place sucks! I had an appointment at 9AM at Ecorse and they canceled without notifying me. I waited for half an hour and had to call them and they told me that tester could’t show up. They didn’t even bother to apologize! Why are they still running?

They offered a free test as a makeup for the NCNS. The test was taken at Ann Arbor and the tester is a nice guy.

So as I said in my previous review, the 1-​star review was for A SPECIFIC INSTRUCTOR, rather than All-​Star as a whole. (I’d recommend you read if you ever have any issues with a specific instructor).
In the last several weeks, All-​Star has done a phenomenal job in making sure my sister’s needs were met and that she was able to finish segment 1 without any other instructor issues. The people in the office reassured us that Paula would be receiving much additional training before she is sent out on the road with another student. My sister and her friend both got make-​up drives and they both had very good experiences from then on out. All-​Star also called home and talked to my parents to make sure any other concerns were addressed, and I actually even got an e-​mail from Brent W himself (owner of All-​Star) as a follow-​up to make sure that we were satisfied and to ask if there were any unaddressed concerns or issues. I was very surprised, but ultimately pleased. Even my dad, who was seething on the day that the «Paula» incident happened, was very happy with how All-Star’s leadership handled this issue. I’m happy to say my sister and her friend successfully passed Segment 1, and she’s now excited again to keep driving and continue with the process.

Staff is friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, classes and times kept getting changed. Had to reschedule the kids 3 times. Then, once they were done with Segment 1 and driving, All Star has not gotten them their certificates. Very poor organization and communication. I would recommend going to another provider.

Awful. We called to schedule driving and they said they would put us on the list and call us back. 3 weeks went by with no call, so we called back. We asked about our previous call only to be told they had forgotten to put us on the list. They apologized and said they would write our info down and call us back (again). That was 3 months ago, and to this day we have not gotten a call back from them. We ended up going with the Sears driving school, which actually followed through for us. From what I’ve heard Sears is also cheaper.

If I could give this negative stars I would. Spending your money here is foolish.
Look folks, this company is just NOT an option.
Find a place where you can drop the kids off, go through the classes and in car training all at once. Somewhere that has a center, with multiple instructors, contingency plans when the instructor is out, etc. Read on to find out why.
Scheduled for a three week course. Showed up at the high school at the day/​time that we were supposed to be there. Room was dark. Called the number to find that class had been rescheduled (condensed from a 3 week course to 2 week course but would run longer in order to meet 24hr class time state mandate). Lady I spoke to was nice and apologetic. I was informed that a voicemail was left for us. Not sure if that’s the case, but it would seem that confirming with your customer that the plans had been changed instead of hoping that the customer was informed might be a better way to ensure communication was received. The problem is that as working parents we make arrangements to get non-​drivers to the place which means jockeying work schedules and other plans only to get those changed with no notice. Frustrating. I see others here had the same issue and had even more rescheduling during the process. It would appear that their is a corporate office supporting the franchises in various cities — maybe the scheduled change and communication issue stemmed from there? I assume mileage may vary at each location? We’ll see.
I will post back as to the quality of the instruction and if more changes are made to schedule.
UPDATE: Day 1. Teacher arrived right at 9 when class was to start. About 15 – 20 kids waiting in the hall. Some had different room numbers for the location and had walked around the halls looking for it. Was informed that class would not be running longer as told by office last week. Our state has a min 24 hr of class time. So now I have to call again and find out why I’m not getting what I paid for.
UPDATE: the teacher was OK and the coursework was applicable, good. I would imagine your mileage may vary based on the teacher you get.
The driving lessons were booked so far in arrears that they were 1 – 2 months AFTER the in class. Then the instructor had to cancel one of the in car training sessions. He did so 1 hour prior to the in-​car. Which in my case was horribly inconvenient given that the students don’t drive yet and special arrangements had to be made around work schedules etc. to plan to get them there for the day. Given the backlog, and impending start of school not sure how we will cram in our other day of driving. And, it’s a $ 40 fee if we would have had to cancel on the instructor???

Lesson cancelled 30 min prior. After we drove there. Reschedule.
Update
Told us 4pm on Sunday for lesson. Arrived at 3:50 pm. Got a text at 4 that we had missed a lesson at 2. So why did he wait until 4 to tell us we had missed the lesson at 2? Informed us that there would be a $ 70 penalty fee per kid. Yeah my arse. So we show up as planned, he doesn’t, we get a fee?
Three months to complete this course. Completion is required in Ohio.
This is throwing money and time away.

Enrolled daughter and was called a few days prior to say that the class was to be rescheduled. On the first day of the rescheduled class 3 kids didn’t show up and the instructor said the class was cancelled. Turns out those kids just couldn’t find the class. Not surprising as there was no room number given for what classroom it was to be held in. The following day I get a call explaining this and that class will resume on Wednesday in the same room. My daughter goes and sits in the classroom by herself for a half hour before calling me and walking to a friends house. I call the next day and they say that the class is completely cancelled and had tried to call everyone. Ridiculous. I asked for my money back and said that I will be sending my daughter to a competent school. They did send a check out quickly but it’s for the wrong amount. Now I need to deal with them concerning that. Horrible.

Very poor customer service– Rude and not helpful
Instructors do not teach State requirements– At All Star they have three packages (bronze, silver, and gold) This is only supposed to give an option to pay a little more to get more experience with one of their instructors. However, they will get their money from you in another way.
There are plenty of other driving schools, with good ratings to choose from!!!

We signed our son up for segment 1 because it was available at his school. The day he was supposed to have his first class he called me and said no one was there. I called All Star and was told the dates for the class had been changed. I asked why I had not been called since they had my home and cell numbers. After being put on hold for about 5 minutes she said that someone had called. I asked why no message had been left and she said «because no one answered.» her tone of voice was very rude.
I have caller id, answering machine and even voice mail on my home phone. there was not even a call from them. My cell has similar features
THE INSTRUCTOR WAS GOOD I do have to give them that.
THEN came segment 2. the Friday before his Monday class I got a message that the class he registered for was cancelled, but that he could go to another location. I guess I should just be glad that they at least called.
We chose another driving school and were very happy with that. There is only so much incompetence I can tolerate.
