Not the sort of place you would expect to find in Anchorage. Cool place for business meetings. Spicy drinking chocolate with espresso highly recommended.

I went back to one of my favorite cafes to study and I also had a craving for chocolate today. This place is undoubtedly like the cafes you would see in the Seattle area. Everything has a modern art deco vibe along with tons of paintings and crafts for sale from local artists. The employees here are super cool and laid back. There are comfortable armchairs and sofas for hanging out and several trendy style tables and chairs in addition to the free Wi-​Fi.
The selection of chocolates and their coffee menu is what sets this apart from other cafes I have been to. Every coffee drink on their menu has an option of adding Silky or Spicy Mayan Chocolate to your drink. I ordered the Affogatto which is an espresso drink with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and Silky Chocolate mixed in. What a delicious treat. You can also order straight up drinking chocolate in a small cup as well. The Spicy Mayan has a strong kick to it and is a great addition to a Capuccino or Americano. The Silky is my favorite and I will have that on any coffee drink they serve.
One of the chocolates I was curious to try out was their Smoked Salmon Dark Chocolate Truffles. Before anyone balks at this combination of food, I can definitely tell you this was surprisingly delicious and a unique taste of salty, sweet, and spicy. The salmon truffles are $ 3.00 a piece while their salmon chocolate bars go for about $ 8.00. A bit on the pricey side, but it never hurts to treat yourself and to try something off the beaten path for a change. There’s a large room in the back where you can see them making all sorts of chocolates from scratch before putting it in their display cases at the counter. A really cool place to study or hang out and definitely a welcome addition to the café scene in Anchorage.

Best spot for a coffee meeting. They have a good selection of gifts and delicious chocolate. The décor is very unique and always feels inviting.

I am completely taken with this place. I haven’t gotten to try any of their chocolates (as adorable and delicious looking as they are) but their drinking chocolate holds its own. I don’t get cocoa often but when I can MD is stop #1. I also recently tried one of their spicy chocolate chip cookies and it was also fantastic. I saved half of it to share with my husband later so he could try it too. He also loved the spicy kick!
Their staff is nice as well, and are always ready for a short chat. I hope to try some chocolates soon, but that will have to be my holiday treat.

I bring out of town guests here for the smoke salmon truffles, they’re delicious and very unique to the area, everyone always brings a few home as souvenirs! Who really wants an Alaska magnet when they could have a smoked salmon truffle?!? Nobody that’s who!

While I first thought this place was a tad pretentious with all of its art and odd flavor combinations of pricey truffles, it is more than redeemed by its drinking chocolate. You get this little cup of excellence from a cheerful person behind the counter. It is sinfully rich and served with whipped cream. It is not overly sweet, just thick and chocolaty. It is very stress relieving to sit in one of the chairs there and look at the art while slowly eating from the cup of chocolate. While the truffles are overpriced and have uncomfortable favors like blueberry sardine and peach curry (not joking!) they are pretty to look at and laugh at while waiting in line. My friends and I like to play «If you had to eat one.»

Come for the coffee and chocolate and stay for the art. I love the spice drinking chocolate and any of the truffles too. Unique gifts and cards too…

So, I’m not sure how unique this place is on a global scale or anything, but it’s definitely the only chocolate bar I know of. The atmosphere is quirky and eccentric, and smacks of Seattle alternative chic with cute, abnormal décor, a super small art gallery, and random knick knacks. Their main products are high-​end, small batch chocolate truffles and desert items, drinking chocolate, and espresso/​coffee. The other reviews have mostly mentioned the spicy Mayan chocolate, which really does have a nice kick that builds the more you drink. Curious and invigorating, not to mention delish, but not toooo overpowering. If you like spicy.
Its not a big place and the selection is limited, but it’s a great spot for am alternative to a coffee shop for a date or small get together. Its close proximity to Café Amsterdam and La Bodega make it all the more appealing to me. You can wash down their rich, custom chocolates with a bottle of Oregon’s most awesometastic Ninkasi from next door!

This is a beautiful establishment. A must-​visit in Anchorage. The décor is as warm and delightful as the drinking chocolate. I love the Spicy Mayan Drinking Chocolate. Be sure to check out the products they have for sale.

Just 3 words: Spicy drinking chocolate! When I used to live in Anchorage, Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge was my go-​to place when I wasn’t feeling like a coffee, but I needed a warm drink that would spice up my life.
I came back to Anchorage for a visit, and I was surprised to not see its location near Johnny Chicago’s or even downtown. I frantically called my friend, and she told me they had moved into the same strip mall complex as Great Harvest and Café Amsterdam. Thank goodness. This place is what makes midtown so special to me (after Moose’s Tooth, of course). Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted by the baristas and the place had a new café-​like feel to it. The new location is considerably bigger and can accommodate more guests than the 2 previous locations. There was a girl typing away at her computer, a man checking his phone, and then me. The menu options have changed, but the goods have not The spicy drinking chocolate is as special as the cronut to me. I ordered the mocha, a fifty-​fifty warm drink of spicy drinking chocolate and espresso. This drink makes any mocha seem like a drip coffee. The smoothness of the espresso coupled with the heat of the spicy drinking chocolate is a match made in heaven (or hell?). The truffles are as rich and chocolatey as ever. At $ 3 a piece, these truffles are a great value over Godiva’s truffles. The salmon surprise (Alaska honey and black pepper ganache in a dark chocolate shell, topped with Alaskan smoked salmon) and julep jive (mint, basil, and Kentucky Bourbon ganache in 65% dark chocolate) are classic flavors that will make the day of anyone in the Lower 48.
The new location is outfitted with plenty of tables, chairs, and local artwork for sale. There is lemon water for guests, and the baristas are patient and skilled at what they do.
I recommend Modern Dwellers to switch up your coffee habit or for a special gift of truffles for your loved ones or best friend here in AK or in the Lower 48.

Amazing cup of hot chocolate, we got the silky dark. This is a pricey place, but well worth a visit.

Sent a box of truffles to my brother (a chef) for his birthday. He loved them! Great selection, delicious and totally worth the splurge. Also, the woman at the counter was really helpful in picking them out and packing them to ship.

The place is very urbanite, with a lot of for sale art on display. In fact it appears as an urban play house /​art gallery that serves amazing yet over prized hot choco.
Seriously folks! 6 $ for a drink? ummm that’s a bit high… But then wait until you taste it.
It’s a nice treat. Literally, it is something you cannot do daily for your pocket, your teeth and your health (go right ahead chocoholics do tell me about all those antioxidants …) needless to Say I will be back and I will bring my chocolate addicted friends.
