History

Established in 1981.

We are very proud of the fact that the food served at the Calico Cupboard is honestly made from scratch with an unusually high standard of food quality and lots of old fashioned goodness. Fresh and unprocessed ingredients are used when ever possible. All our bakery products are made right here at the Calico Cupboard from freshly milled, organically grown whole grain and unbleached flours, honey and other natural ingredients. Our soups, salads and sandwiches are carefully made daily using the freshest produce and lots of fiber rich beans and grains. Many meatless and heart-healthy breakfasts and lunches are available. We realize that many of you are on restricted diets, have specific food allergies, or simply like things eliminated or substituted for something else. So, whenever possible we will make every effort to accomodate your request… just ask.

You’ve probably heard that saying, «that so and so has a white thumb.» Well that’s me! As a young girl I spent a lot of time baking with my grandmother, who was a school baker, and with my mom, who made some great pies, It wasn’t long before I was baking my own masterpieces and experimenting with different recipes. My early love of baking and cooking lead me to major in Hotel & Restaurant Management at W.S. U., with summers spent working at various restaurants. After graduation I worked for Sky Chef, an airline catering company, out of their Tulsa locaion for about a year. Then came marriage to my college sweetheart, Rod, birth of our daughter, Hilary and a short career in real estate. I opened my first Calico Cuboard Café and Bakery in 1981. I was the baker and cook in those days. A second Calico was opeend in Anacortes in 1992, followed by Mount Vernon in 1996 and in 2004, Seed’s Bistro & Bar, located in the historic Tillinghast Seed Company’s origional building.
