Before I take a single photograph, I immerse myself in your story. I approach families much the same way I approached the news stories of my photojournalism career: deeply interested, observant, curious, gently uncovering what’s underneath, hidden, forgotten.

I listen, question, observe. I bring my skills as a journalist and a storyteller. I bring everything but judgment. Because I’ve seen enough to know there is no typical, nothing is perfect, and there is beauty in every single thing.

History

Established in 2001.

A township in war-​torn South Africa is not the kind of place many people want to remember. But 20 years ago, this is where my photojournalism career began. My purpose was to tell the truth of every moment, to help change the world through the power of photography. In family, and in these seemingly ordinary moments, just as much truth can be uncovered. Simple joy, deep feeling. Love, essentially. These stories are rarely told. I’ve dedicated my life’s work to telling them, because they matter more than any passing news story ever could. Today, rather than appearing in the pages of The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and Newsweek, my work appears in the most-​loved rooms of my clients, poignant doorways back to feelings of connection and the simple joys of family.
