Charlie’s Chicken

Excellent fried chicken on a Sunday afternoon! Found this place via Unilocal on a trip from Virginia to North Carolina. The food was excellent (fried chicken comparable to nationally famous Gus’s in Memphis), service was great and friendly. Had a nice chat on the way out with Charlie and his wife who were genuine. So glad we stopped and found this hidden gem!

Let me begin by saying that I am a BIG fan of fried chicken. Charlie’s may not be the best in the country, but I’ve never had better.
Got some right out of the frier this summer. It was food porn at its finest, perfectly crisp and golden! Highly recommend that you give it a try.

Charlie makes some serious fried chicken. The patio is a nice place to sit when the weather’s warm. Charlie goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need. If you’re passing through Amherst, this is the place to stop.

At the suggestion of my SBC classmate DE, we ordered the fried chicken, chicken tenders and the taters for our recent reunion class picnic. We were delighted by all three — they were well-​seasoned and perfectly cooked! Your chicken is rockin’ — Hot or Cold!
Thanks for making chicken so succulent & scrumptious that I dream about it on the West Coast! Keep it up Charlie’s Chicken… you’ve got a great thing going! :)

Great place to get fried chicken. I’m usually in there for lunch. I have occasional conversations with Skippy and Mrs. Brown as well as other chicken goers that want to know the happenings with Lancer Football! Always better to go in the week after a win :)

I don’t normally write reviews but I signed up to for Charlie’s Chicken. If your looking for non chain but fantastic southern cooking, this is it. You’d never find this place driving by due to its location but the chicken pieces are plump, juicy and tender. The breast was Hugh!
They don’t over do it on the breading but its still crisp and tasty! The ladies serving you are very fast and hand you your plate with a smile. The sides were awesome and they wouldn’t let our group of seven pay until we finished eating.
If you’re towing to VIR, this is a great place to stop and its not far off the highway at all. Better than the McDonalds on the way here. However, it’s not a very trailer friendly location. Worth the effort though.
The laundrymat attached next door has nothing to do with the great food they serve here, but adds to the charm. It was too cold to use the outside deck but I imagine it would be jam packed during the summer.
Decided to take a chance coming here. Wish I wasn’t giving away my new Virginia chicken place secret but its worth the trip.
