Fountain Hills Golf Course

The guy in the shop was very rude. Wanted me to share a cart with someone else. I was planning on doing a quick 9 holes It was over packed took 4.5 hours for 9 holes. Never will go back. Don’t recommend this course. Id rather go back to Stoney Creek.

Quick nine holes. Well maintained for municipal course. Friendly staff. Love the outdoor patio close by driving range. Favorite quick course. No frills.

Last Friday I called and made a 3:16 tee time. I arrived and was at the counter to pay and check in at 3:13. I then was berated by a grumpy manager for not being five minutes early, which he said is club policy though they never tell anyone that. He asked how the heck I thought I could get from the counter to the tee, tee up and hit in three minutes. I noted that it was of course impossible to do that when one was being yelled at in the clubhouse rather than being rung up and moved along. Guy then called me a smart *ss and we ended up leaving and playing the course next door. Someone needs to remind these guys that this is not Augusta National. And they need a course in hospitality. Despite the rudeness, they get two stars since I do like the course for the money.

The beer lady said she had blue Gatorade. She did not have blue Gatorade, she only had red All Sport. I felt jipped. Get blue Gatorade and you will get more stars.

This review will be both for the golf course and the clubhouse/​reception area. I had a golf outing followed by a wedding reception the next evening. My overall experience was wonderful.
The course was maintained well. A few unique holes and greens. I found this course to be pretty easy. I think most beginner and novice golfers would agree (other than a few narrow fairways). There is road next to a few of the first holes, so try to keep it straight or you might be buying someone a new windsheild. The crowd on the course was a bit older than what I like to play behind. The play was really slow.
The reception was very well prepared for and looked beautiful. Its not a very large room, but enough room for maybe 100 people. Service was also pretty decent. The food? Eh. I could take it or leave it. Your standard chicken veggies and mashed potatoes. It was ok, nothing terrible, but nothing special. The salad? A bit of wet iceburg on a plate with some shreaded carrot and a small slice of tomato. Wasnt here for the food, so I wasn’t bothered much.
If I was in the area I wouldn’t think twice about catching a quick nine and having a few beers at the 19^th.

I attended a reception at site over the weekend. The food was very fresh and tasty. It didn’t have that «banquet hall» taste. The chicken was tender and marinated. The veggies were steamed just right and the mashed potatoes were maybe some of the best I’ve ever had. The staff were accommodating and polite. This venue is beautiful and clean. I’d definitely recommend it.

The publicity description for the Fountain Hills course describes it as «one of the finest 9-​hole courses in the Chicago area». This is true, and the reason why it deserves the five-​star rating.
Has a good combination of variety, challenge, and conditioning. Longer and more complex than any of the 9-​hole courses in the Park District. Has a nice driving range for practice located in the center of course behind the clubhouse, as well as a chipping /​putting green.
In particular, Fountain Hills is an excellent value for the money, with very reasonable fees. They furthermore have discounts for residents, senior citizens, and regular players.
Has enough challenge for good players when playing from the tips. May be too difficult for beginners, but no one will be judgmental on the basis of ability. For city-​dwellers the course can be reached in about 30 minutes from downtown Chicago.
Numerous deep, well-​sculpted bunkers, and a sand «beach» that runs along the edge of the water. And, true to the name, there are some large hills and significant elevation changes. And fountains in the middle of the lake. The fairways and tee boxes were average condition, the greens are well maintained.
Both of the par-​5 holes are long and play into well-​guarded greens. The 6^th hole is a dogleg and therefore has an interesting risk/​reward option for very long hitters: it is possible to reach the green in two, but requires a blind shot into an area in which there is a lot of potential trouble.
The 9^th hole is perhaps the most difficult, and is more visually intimidating than what is typically seen at municipal courses. There is a water hazard along the entire right side, narrow landing area, and obligatory second shot over water to a sloping green.
We are impressed and grateful to the kind staff. Very fun place and good value!
