I went to the Golf Club of Georgia on Monday as a participant in the Cadillac Innovation Golf Clinic( ). While I didn’t play the course, I got to walk, take lessons, and practice shots on many of its holes, driving range, and practice putting green and short game area, as well as explore the clubhouse, golf shop, and men’s locker room and grill. As with any private golf club, the facilities and course conditions are top-notch. The club was established in 1990 and the clubhouse is grandiose and traditional. However, it’s not as outrageously big as some newer clubhouses are, such as the one at TPC Sugarloaf. The dining area, which has a plethora of windows, looks out onto lush lawns and the practice area and the men’s locker room looks over No. 9 green(Lakeside). Speaking of which, there are two 18’s on this course: Creekside and Lakeside, both designed by Arthur Hills. We spent most of our time on the Lakeside course, which is the more scenic and modern of the two tracks. The course was in outstanding condition from the fairways to the bunkers and to the greens, which were firm and fast by the time we got to them in the early afternoon. I enjoyed exploring the men’s locker room where I ran into 2008 Masters champ Trevor Immelman and golf instructor David Leadbetter. I also noticed some golf bags on display with names of various amateurs including my hometown’s very own Drew Weaver(High Point, NC). I was surprised to see his name here and later found out that he played against Colt Knost in the 2008 Georgia Cup, which pits the reigning U.S. Amateur champ against the reigning British Amateur champ. The Georgia Cup started in 1998 and has been played at this club each year ever since. Overall, I found the staff at the Golf Club of Georgia to be very hospitable and welcoming to our large group of attendees and they were great hosts for the golf clinic.

The Golf Club of Georgia is a fantastic golf club offering 36 holes of championship golf. Lakeside and Creekside are two great examples of Georgia golf with rolling hills, mature trees and enough water to provide errant balls with submerged final resting spots. Bring plenty of balls when you play here! The club house is well maintained with many artifacts from the Georgia Cup that the Club hosts each year prior to the Masters for the American and British amateur champions. The food is quality fare that is well prepared such as steaks, seafood and the menu includes Georgia traditions such as a delicious peach cobbler. If I lived in Atlanta, the Golf Club of Georgia would be my home club…

I used to be the sous chef here. The kitchen puts out GREAT food. Soups from scratch, sandwich and entrees of the day keep you wondering just what you have to have now and what you may have to try next time. Chef Vicky — Audrey — Carlos — Celina put a lot of love in all of the food. If they still do the Cuban sandwich and the grilled peach salad you won’t be disappointed. Tip your servers they will take good care of you.

Outstanding golf challenge and great course conditions. 1. lakeside course is more scenic and fun 2. creekside is much more target and challenging golf that is mentally challenging. overall course conditions are phenomenal. yes, there are rules… so you have to tuck in your shirt, big deal, but you can smoke a cigar and cigarette in the lounge with all the flat screens in the mens bar. Whats so wrong about that? Anyways, i would recommend this place, as I got to play as a guest of a friend of mine and it was fantastic

So I am not entirely convinced that any prospective member will be consulting Unilocal before they drop the $ 80K to join here — but just in case, I will share my thoughts about this place. I played here a few weeks ago as a guest of a friend who is a member. He is a total golf nutter and told me that this place is the most beautiful golf course in Georgia after Augusta National. I haven’t been to Augusta but it is certainly a phenomenally beautiful course — almost every hole is a signature hole, with stunning vistas, lakeside views, majestic slopes, undulating fairways and challenging greens. There are two courses — I played Lakeside — the other one is supposed to be incredibly tough. I had a putt to par the first hole and I thought I was off to the races, but playing with borrowed clubs my round went downhill. I still enjoyed it. The clubhouse is the last word in design for manly men. Lovely bar, flat screens a-go-go, leather chairs with which to relax with a post round brandy — it is all a picture perfect Atlanta Golf Club from central casting. It seems perfect. Too perfect. It is, There are three fundamental flaws and even if I had it to spare there is no way I would throw my $ 80K at these guys for the following reasons: 1. No carts on the fairway. Ever. Come on, That is ridiculous. I actually like to walk sometimes but when I take a cart I want to take a cart, not take a cart and walk. 2. Shirts must be tucked in at all times. Give me a break. What is this — middle school? 3. The golf course is spectacular, but every hole is spoiled by a little sign which says«cigars and other trash must be disposed of properly» Are you guys kidding me — you want me to pay $ 80K so you can treat me like a child? Hmmm… maybe that is part of the attraction for the members.
