History

Established in 2013.

An award-winning home meadmaker and a longtime beverage writer met over beers in 2012 and got to talking about why mead isn’t more common. Then they decided to change that.

Meet the Business Owner

Greg and Mike M.

Business Owner

Greg was a longtime beer blogger (at The Pour Curator) with a background and connoisseurship of beverages including craft beer, bourbon and mezcal. He discovered craft beer and made his first batch of mead while getting his undergrad degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He worked in nonprofit before receiving an MBA, focusing in entrepreneurship at Lehigh, and has since been a startup business evangelist.

An accomplished home brewer, Michael brewed his first batch of beer in 2001 and the hobby took hold. He decided to dabble into mead making and went on to win several awards at various competitions and eventually the 2011 Valhalla mead competition best-of-show winning recipe. That best-of-show award led to a successful collaboration batch made with Moonlight Meadery in New Hampshire, which provided Michael a look into how a successful commercial meadery operates, and planted the seed that eventually led to The Colony.
