I have been looking for fabric to re-​upholster my sofa and love seat for 2 years now. I’ve been to South Philadelphia to rows of fabric outlets and to every fabric store I’ve passed in my travels. I finally found «Fabrics By Allen» in a shopping center on Tilghman out towards the turnpike entrance. There are some fabrics hanging on big bolts, my preferred way of seeing fabric as the pieces are so large. But they didn’t have anything I liked in the large bolts so I ended up choosing from the huge number of fabric sample books they have in the shop. All kinds of brand names and types of fabric are represented.
Richard Bass is the man in charge, and he was friendly and helpful. He offered to let me take home the samples I was interested in so I could see them in the ambience and lighting of my own home. It turns out he knows the upholsterer that I have chosen to do the work, and he will arrange for the pick up of the fabric so I don’t have to pick it up and take it to the upholsterer — a great convenience for me :-)
Be sure to ask about a discount if you order a large amount of fabric — I asked if there was a discount for large orders and got one (ordered 34 yards, which is a lot!). I had my sample at home for two weeks, agonizing over the color red, velvety micro-​fiber that would be just right — 4 shades of red to choose from — and washable! I feel so daring — just had my bedroom painted a deep red that turned out stunning, and now a beautiful shade of red for my sofa and love seat to further spice up my life.
