Description

Specialties

For most dogs, daycare is an entirely new social environment. Even a romp at the dog park is very different as your dog usually has you around to provide a personal connection and supervision. Though we wish we could open our doors to every dog, not every dog wants to be, or should be, in dog daycare. We conduct a careful screening and orientation process to safeguard all the dogs in our care.

We have developed a temperament evaluation specifically designed to provide us with insight into which dogs will adapt to and enjoy our Positive PlaycareSM. We perform our temperament evaluation as part of your dog’s Orientation Day Program. On that day, specially trained members of our staff conduct a physically and socially interactive «interview» with your dog to evaluate your dog’s comfort level with being in the highly social environment of a dog daycare.

History

Established in 2003.

The roots of our company are in the dog-loving community of Alexandria, most specifically the neighborhood of Del Ray in which we reside. In 2003, a movement sprang up among the residents of Del Ray to attract a dog daycare into their area. Your Dog’s Best Friends is the result of their efforts. One of those early advocates, who became an adviser to this project, Sandy Modell, captured our guiding principal in one simple phrase: «Create a profoundly positive place for dogs and success will follow.»

We have done just that. Our mantra is «A devotion to dogs is at the heart of everything we do.»

Meet the Business Owner

Paul H.

Business Owner

Initially, to some folks, Paul Haire would be an unlikely candidate for being the owner and operator of a leading edge cageless dog daycare and boarding facility. He was, before this, an established real estate investor and broker –and a former policy wonk.

His own experience with cageless daycare and boarding, taking his black lab, Bella, was enough to convince him that both cageless daycare and cageless boarding had real benefits for both a dog and the dog’s owner. They weren’t just a «luxury» to him but were both essential to the well-being of his dog.

Decades later, the director of the porpoise training at the Institute where Paul had learned his skills adapted those training techniques to training dogs. That director, Karen Pryor, is considered the founder of clicker training for dog obedience. Now, Paul is applying the lessons about behavioral conditioning he learned in her program to create and manage a stable, happy and vibrant community of dogs.
