Specialties

The Back Porch Thrift Store is owned and operated by United Community Ministries, one of the largest providers of human services in Fairfax County. We have served the Mount Vernon area for over thirty years. All the proceeds (100%) remain in the local community to help those in need. The Back Porch carries women’s and men’s clothing, furniture, housewares, home décor, books/records, antiques and collectibles, jewelry as well as the unique and unusual items.

History

Established in 1969.

Originating in the early 1960’s, people would bring clothing donations to Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church and store the donations in a small trailer. Each Saturday, the donated clothes were distributed to residents of the Gum Springs community. The trailer moved to the corner of Fordson Road and Sherwood Hall Lane when Bethlehem Baptist Church relocated. In July 1969, UCM was founded and the thrift store moved to the UCM location on North Kings Highway for a time. By the early 1980’s the store, along with UCM moved back to the back part of Fordson Road. Donations were dropped off on a rear loading dock, which the community named «The Back Porch». Over time donations began to grow and the store became more formalized. By the early 1990’s, UCM’s Back Porch moved into The Crossroads Shopping Center off of Route 1. During the mid ’90’s a second location was opened in Woodbridge, VA but closed after a brief time. The store moved in 1998 to another location in the same shopping cen
