The Mark

I just moved in a couple of weeks ago (April 2016) and luckily for me all the construction has been completed. Which by the way isn’t a bad thing, it just means out with the old, in with the new! I will say that the property management is simply stellar and by far the best management team I’ve ever worked with. From my very first interaction with the staff at The Mark, I have been extremely impressed. Both Tunisha and Tina in the main office have been very accommodating with showing apartments and their hospitality has been great! Tunisha was available every step of the way for my move-​in and in working through the application paperwork. The property is clean and the amenities will WOW you! I live in the modern renovated unit and I love the space and the natural sunlight.
Again, great property and management team!

DO NOT EVEN LOOK OR CONSIDER THE MARK!!! I challenge anyone reading this review to locate more than two positive reviews of this building. Also the language used by the management in reply to other negative comments («We apologize that your experience at The Mark so far has been less than favorable. However, this review does not paint an accurate picture of this property.) is dismissive, copy and pasted, and sadly does nothing to solve any real issues faced by the tenants of this apartment. I have lived here for several months and there have been a plethora of issues. First, the heat and AC is controlled by the property staff, and tenants only have access to one or the other. The current schedule is heat from September-​May and A/​C May-​September. This is not a fact that is disclosed in the tour or lease. Secondly, the water is only available intermittently. I have in front of me 18 written notices provided by the apartment that the water/​or hot water will be unavailable for periods of 12 hours or greater, bordering on the line of «unreasonable» as outlined in Virginia Landlord Tenant Act. This is not to include the many written notices I have of gas/​power and other critical utility outages. As I am writing this there is a multi-​floor hot water outage, that was unannounced, and this isn’t the first time. The office staff are, much like the written replies of management, dismissive, rude and as before do nothing to address the real issues faced by the tenants of The Mark. Paying over $ 1,000 a month, just in rent, to be treated as a nuisance when issues arise, and to hide important facts about the property is unacceptable. Unfortunately, I will get the same cookie cutter response to this post, and I, like many other current residents whom I have spoken to, will not be renewing our leases at The Mark. I would rather pay more somewhere else in order to have a decent quality of life as I live my life and raise my family in the D. C Metro area.

Do NOT LIVE HERE– a roach motel is a better option! This management company lies repeatedly about asbestos. It is every where! The kitchen floor, ceiling, walls& they drill with out containing asbestos. Their on-​site asbestos monitor moonlights as the cable line runner! Honestly, this apartment building is your classic bait and switch… the gym they show you in the walk through isn’t even available to use! Instead is a gym circa the 1990s. What ever you do, do not fall for the shiny model room they show you, once you rent your apartment is less than luxury— all be it habitable. RUN RUN RUN!!!

We have been living in the apartment for almost a year now, and I can honestly say I cannot WAIT to move out. First of all, there is a huge trash problem. People leave their disgusting trash in the middle of the hallways (even in the elevators!!!) constantly. Second of all, there are kids playing in the hallways until 1−2-3am every night. They ride their scooters down the hallways, scream, cry, spill food and drinks everywhere, and their parents are nowhere to be found. We have complained a few times to management, and NOTHING has been done. Management simply does not care. Third of all, this building is in the middle of reconstruction and there is an asbestos and black mold problem. I’ve NEVER had any respiratory problems until I moved here. It’s a living nightmare and I’m counting down the days until our lease is finally up.

This is the worst place to live ever. Positive for mold and asbestos. Asbestos has been found on the first floor and the top three. Only a matter of time before they find it in my floor. Construction at every end of the building. Staff are rude. I personally talked to the pest control supervisor, who has to come into the building once a week. The pest control supervisor advised me that the building is so old there is no way to eliminate the bugs. The bugs all living in the structure of the building. Then the pest control flashlight shined his flashlight in a door crack to show me the biggest amount of roaches i have ever seen. The apartments all have gnats/​flies in the room.
Don’t live here. No exaggerations.
If you are still thinking about living here, at least walk through the building and ask the current residents how they feel first!
