Global Food

I just discovered this grocery store. And I am upset with myself for not finding it sooner. An amazing selection of foods from all over the world. Lots of value for you money here, for the same amount of money you would spend at Safeway you can walk out of here with triple the amount of grocery’s.

This place is cheap! !!! Like seriously if you are trying to save money this is the place to get food. It’s crazy weird in there in terms of items. Whole isles smell like weird spices and there’s loads of Chinese candy and Mexican herbs and whatever. I don’t shop for meat here but they have a deli if ye dare… no more for you Harris Teeter the stealer of my paycheck… they keep it affordable here.

This one star is heavily based on the fact that they don’t carry steamed bun here.
It’s also based on the fact that I spent a good amount of time walking around shopping then as soon as I get to the line they tell me that they’re only accepting cash. Excuse me? I know there’s a manual credit card swiper in there, you didn’t just me come up with arms full of groceries to crush my soul by having me go home empty handed AND not have steamed buns. Also, they close at 9, but who knows, maybe that’s a convenience thing for them too.

We’ve been fans for a long time of LA Mart down in Springfield, and it’s great to find a place like Global Foods that’s closer and, on many fronts, even better.
While it doesn’t have quite the amazing array of international fresh fruit and produce you find at LA Mart, it’s not bad at all, and everything seemed fresh and in good shape — we found everything from pomegranates to spaghetti squash, along with great-​looking cauliflower, mandarin oranges, etc. There are lots of far more exotic choices as well, from cactus leaves to all kinds of things I couldn’t begin to identify.
The meat department, if you’re only used to Harris Teeter or other purely Western supermarkets, might be a little off-​putting — everything is clearly meat, not tidily wrapped small items with no sign of blood or gore — but the quality looked good and the selection of halal choices is large. Seafood also looked fresh and clean, with some especially nice looking shrimp.
Everything else is one step up from LA Mart (and most international places), being far better organized and less chaotic. Aisles are clearly marked and mostly contain what the signs say. There’s a larger selection of «American» choices than you’ll often see, along with endless choices of spices, beans, and snacks of all kinds.
And then there’s the prices. We walked out with a stuffed cart piled high and paid about the same as we do for half the amount of items elsewhere. With the exception of a few specific items, we can find everything we buy weekly — Global Foods is going to be our new regular food-​shopping destination.

It’s an odd shopping center; you could easily find yourself parking on the opposite side of the building to where the store actually is, though it’s no great distance still.
I’ve been to the Global Food Market in Montgomery Village often enough and found this one to be slightly worse on its selection of things I like, namely vegetables, packaged Indian foods, and Asian noodles. Nonetheless, you’ll find plenty of cheap stuff, and some of it is hard to find items. A few things I saw were past their expiration date, and it isn’t exactly ritzy, but it’s not a bad idea to check this place out and find something new to try.

I was on a quixotic quest for raw sugarcane. A visit to H Mart and a call to New Grand Mart netted no luck. Finally, somebody mentioned this place which I didn’t even know existed.
If you were familiar with the Giant Food near the Mark Center that closed, this is in that location. It is a bit hidden from the street and the lighting makes it naturally look dingy (much like the Giant did). However, it is pretty well put together. The staff was not super helpful, but were able to point me in the general direction of what I needed.
On the whole it was a good experience, and it will most likely be my go to place for international foods.

This is probably one of my least favorite Global Foods stores. They have a limited selection on Asian and Indian items which is my usual go to’s. They carry mostly Latino items which is probably based on demographics. Their produce is also limited, and a lot of the produce were bad and not very fresh. It’s also not very clean. The service isn’t good. And the layout is not navigational friendly. Much better International market choices in Northern Virginia!

It’s hard to find good international options that are both fresh and decently priced. Global Food has both. This store has replaced my weekly grocery trips to Giant and Trader Joe’s and is always fully stocked with the freshest fruits and vegetables.

This place is cheap and wonderful with TONS of options from kosher and halal to your everyday eatings such as pigs feet and oxen tail… oh wait…
It pretty much covers the name being very global. I liked that it was pretty huge with its variety of foods and it was clustered in there like some world markets are.
The customer service is solid. I haven’t had any trouble with anyone since I’ve been shopping here the last few grocery trips, and on top of that they’re cheaper than Harry Tits, Giant, and Safeway. All bonus points in my book!

Good selection of items. Staffs are friendly. Enjoy the halal meats. Sale items are great. I shop between New Grand Mart and here and some things they carry best. Wish they would stock up on more Jamaican /​Caribbean items.

Like others have said, Global Foods has replaced some Giant locations in select areas. It is nice to have a store that has groceries from many different regions of the globe (with a name like Global Foods who would have thought?!) The store was fairly clean, it didn’t have an unpleasant smell and there was a sizable halal meat section that wasn’t too expensive. Looking at the pictures that others have posted though I was disappointed that some of the items weren’t stocked. I was looking for ryazhenka and mango lassi but they didn’t appear to be on the shelf, I couldn’t find my Ulker cookies, and there were also some foods in the Asian frozen section that looked a little freezer burned (including my poor Japanese mushi-​pan!)
HMart is a bit further, but it definitely feels cleaner and a little more upscale. A reviewer said that they wish that Global Food had a food court, but I don’t think I would actually want to eat there. That said, I appreciate that there is a store close by that I can take my mother and mother-​in-​law to and get Indonesian and Pakistani/​Indian groceries and they would both be fairly satisfied. Produce was pretty fresh and fairly cheap. I plan on returning, but next time I hope all the items I’m looking for are in stock.

Best supermarket in the area to find all those ethnic products we so much love to cook with. It’s like traveling around the world in 15 aisles, you have from Asian to Latin, middle eastern, Caribbean and American cooking products. Trying to prepare that cultural home dish? Give them a visit and I get you will be able to find the most fresh and rare to find ingredients.

I was hoping this would be close in terms of quality and selection as the other Global Foods or your typical H-​Mart. Unfortunately it was not. Fruit and veggie selection was underwhelming and not very fresh. For example, many of the veggies looked tired and limp. I’m surprised they didn’t have chives. I had to look way too long for a few apples that were not bruised. Selection of asian snacks is minimal. On the bright side, their prices are very good. I think next time, we’ll make the longer drive to check out the other Global Foods, which sounds much better from what I’ve heard. I doubt I’ll be coming back to this location.

The prices are the best in Alexandria and the produce is outstanding! I can’t comment about the quality of the meat as I only eat seafood and vegetables; however, the seafood is great (live lobsters are cheap) and you can by tofu by the tub for a few dollars. The rice selection is immense and if you like to dabble in Indian, Latin, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, or Asian cooking, this place will have every hard to find ingredient out there. As a former chef I am delighted that this place opened and my wallet will be happy about the less frequent trips to Whole Foods on Duke Street.

This is so much better then the Giant that was here before. Global Food will thrive in this location of Alexandria! Lots of fresh Fish, Great Halal meat selection and decent produce. I hope Global Food will come to the old Bloom store in Annandale! Until then we will frequent this location.

Very good produce and fresh halal meats/​fish selection. One of the standard korean/​asian/​chinese groceries. Wide array of produce, herbs and indian food as well. Priced nominally

Global Food has replaced the Giant Food that closed about a year ago. It seems to be a Korean owned establishment with Korean, Latin, and American food offerings, in addition to a few other countries thrown into the mix. It’s not as expansive as some of the larger Korean grocery stores in the area (and subsequently doesn’t have as much selection as the others), but it’s less cramped which I appreciate. I do hope that they will offer something for the lunch time crowd in the area and get rid of the silly $ 10 minimum for credit cards.
