Established in 1944.

CommonWealth One Federal Credit Union was chartered in 1944 as Army Air Force Annex #1 Credit Union, with only 94 members and an all volunteer staff. Since those humble beginnings, we have grown to become a full-service financial institution serving a diverse membership with branches located in Northern Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley and Washington, DC.

It amazes me how poorly long-standing customers are treated when issues arise.
Why do I have to complete a complaint to receive common-sense results!

I have been a cofcu member for some time. for the longest time I have LOVED the service and accountability this financial institution has provided. Having said that, however, there service and policies have severely diminished in the last 6 – 8 months. So much unsatisfaction I am leaving this organization and will never bring any of my business back to them. Nor will I recommend any new business for them. if you are considering an account here please be advised this is not the same financial institution many of us have loved over the years. Do your due diligence and search out other options and compare them for yourself before committing to cofcu

Well, once you go through a difficult time you see who they truly are. Horrible collections dept especially Ms. Byers cranky self. always so moody and irate on the phone. I only deal with Bilal who is very respectful. It used to be a very good bank to bank with now its just some shit. I will stick to the Navy Federal who goes above and beyond for their customers. Take your service somewhere else.

For a long time, I have had mixed feelings about my bank, and had I written a review before this, I would have rated Commonwealth One at 3 stars. However, with a recent change in the ATM card policy, I’m feeling a solid 4 star rating all the way. For years, I have begged the banking-powers-that-be for an additional ATM card as a backup in case my card was lost on one of my back backing trips through Asia or Eastern Europe.
«Look, I promise that I will place it in my backpack’s secret compartment. I swear I will only use it if my other card is lost on one of my trips.»
«Our policy is to issue one card per member.»
«What if I were married and my wife and I had a joint account?»
«That’s different. You would need two cards then.»
I wanted to point out that I was being discriminated against for being single, that there was more chance of my imaginary wife misplacing an extra card than myself, but I could see that it was a waste of time. I would just have to live with the fear that without a backup card, I might one day find myself begging on the streets of Delhi or selling fans to tourist in Hanoi. I resigned myself to the fact that I would forever be at the mercy of the Commonwealth One Banking Leviathan.
Of course, that was until recently when I went to see Heidi about another banking matter. I mention my issue with the second card only in passing, and she responded, «I think I can fix that.»
I chuckled, «Knock yourself out if you want, but I’ve tried and nothing works.»
She smiled and said she would give it a try, and the next day she called saying that my second card had been ordered. All I could say was that I couldn’t believe it. I have to confess that I had been thinking about changing banks, but with this level of customer service, I may just stick around for another 20 years.
