Specialties
Cedar Knoll is a one of a kind restaurant with a storied history. Once part of River Farm, one of five farms possessed by George Washington as part of his network for Mount Vernon, the restaurant has views of the Potomac River from each of its four unique dining rooms. The Botanical Room features slate flooring, large picture windows with views of the mighty Potomac River, a stone fireplace, and farmhouse style tables and chairs. Scientific drawings of plants and flowers help the room to live up to its name. The Presidential Room is very rich in design with nailhead and leather banquettes as booths, a stone fireplace, views of the Potomac, oak panelling, and chandeliers. Our Log Cabin Room was built in the 1800’s and features a stacked timber design with a soaring stone fireplace and antique oxen yoke. The Lafayette Room is our largest room and provides a great space for private events.
History
Established in 2015.
River Farm was one of George Washington’s five farms associated with Mount Vernon. Cedar Knoll lies on the property that was once River Farm. The property has changed hands over the years following Washington’s death in 1799. In the 1800’s a log cabin was built on the knoll between two cedar trees overlooking the Potomac. That log cabin is still a part of Cedar Knoll as the building was expanded around it.
The property was first used in a commercial capacity in the 1940’s, when it was an antique shop and tearoom. In the 1970’s, it was converted to a full service restaurant and event space, and it has operated as such ever since. There have been multiple restauranteurs occupying the space over the years. The Joy of Eating, a local catering company, is the newest business to operate Cedar Knoll.
Along with the property owner, The Joy of Eating has rejuvenated Cedar Knoll and the result is a beautiful restaurant that has retained its natural beauty and charm.
