Vick’s Vittles

Vicks Vittles is a spot that my boyfriend and I were happy we stumbled upon. Our service was quick, friendly, and efficient. The food was fresh and tasty. I was pleased that they were able to make my eggs exactly the way I wanted. In addition, their western décor makes it a fun atmosphere. Only draw back, I cannot get Leann Rimes out of my head. I’d go back to Vicks in a heartbeat. I’m excited to try them for dinner!

One of the best places in town! Their green chile gravy is superb, breakfast burritos are amazing, the service is amazing, Robert (owner) amazing… only negative about this place are their hours of operation. I wish they were open past 2:00pm everyday, especially Sunday as we sometimes don’t get out of church till 1:30 or so.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I pulled in. The parking lot was packed but we sat down immediately. This country themed kitchen had great service. They were on top of refills! The menu has its own NM twists. I was pleasantly surprised. Check this place out!!!

Vick’s is a great breakfast place, and it opens at 0700 (for some reason, breakfast places in Albuquerque seem to open kind of late – I’m looking at you, Duran Central Pharmacy). I’ve been there twice now, and each time I had the … um … I forget what they’re called, but they’re pancakes with green chili, cheese, and ham mixed in. And they come with a couple eggs and your choice of meat – I can recommend the house-​made sausage. The cakes were really good, and the ham was kind of chewy – almost like thick bacon, but less salty.
The coffee was adequate – I think it could be drunk black, but it was better with cream and sugar. Both times I saw at least six items I wanted to try on the menu, but the second time I spent two days trying to figure out where I’d had those pancakes and once I figured it out, I had to have them again.
That’s what I get for not posting a review the first time. The service was very attentive. I felt kind of sorry for the staff because they apparently are required to dress like someone in a cowboy clothes catalog, but I guess it would be worse working at Hooters.

We tried Vick’s this morning for Sunday brunch… We always drive past it on the way to the antique stores on Central and, based on some great Unilocal reviews, finally stopped in.
It was so worth it. We seated ourselves and were quickly served by a friendly waiter who took our drink order and shared menus for my husband and me, and a kids menu and crayons for the little guy. We were evaluating the pros and cons of ordering from the menu vs going full-​on brunch buffet when the owner, Robert Vick, stopped by our table. He told us all about the buffet, shared that they are planning a 5,000 sq ft expansion and will be bringing horses to the restaurant for the kids. He also brought us some blue corn, green chile pancakes from the buffet to try. Nice, nice guy and really made us feel at home.
Sooooo… My husband did the buffet, I ordered a green chile cheeseburger, and we got the little dude biscuits and gravy, since he’s a southerner at heart. Oh. My. Goodness. All the food ended up at our table. All of it in the entire world. The portions were gigantic and everything was delicious. The cheeseburger was so juicy, cheesy and spicy, and just what a green chile cheeseburger should be. The biscuits and gravy were hot and chewy, with lumps of sausage. My husband got bacon, sausage, eggs and biscuits and gravy (like father like son) and went back for a second heaping plate, so I assume everything was delicious there, too. So good.
Great service, friendly owner, awesome food, good value. We will definitely be back!

It’s no secret that Albuquerque serves up a mean breakfast burrito. To really experience this first hand, I decided to come to Vick’s Vittles and was not disappointed. The google maps ap originally took me to some scary house but after searching for the actual restaurant and not the house belonging to Vick Vittles, I found the right place and got settled into a comfortable booth and got to ordering! Cowboy burrito please!
It came and it was magical: all that I expected and then some. The chicken fried steak was delicious. Awesome white gravy everywhere. And, I normally dislike potatoes but these potatoes kept me coming back for more. They were crispy!!! The whole thing was delicious and I single handedly polished it all off. Friendly service, easy going, hometown décor. Opens really early for those early excursions on and about the town. This place is truly a gem.

Vick Vittle’s is something else! I got to speak with Robert Vick, the owner today right after I had breakfast. He informed me that their restaurant is not associated with Roper’s but an independent establishment. He was super friendly as he made sure every customer was satisfied including my boyfriend and I. I liked that a lot. An owner who makes himself present and takes the time to meet his customers gets an A+ in my book.
So obviously, the service here was great but I bet you wanna know how the food was! The food was surprisingly delicious. I liked the fact that everything wasn’t drenched in fat. My potatoes were cooked to perfection. I talked to Robert about this and he informed me that they use a technique called «broasting.» This is the very first time I’ve ever heard of this. Basically they cook their potatoes and chicken in a pressure cooker that basically roasts the food quickly to perfection! This method helps cut the fat pretty much in half! So if you appreciate food that isn’t at all greasy and very delicious, I highly recommend this place!
One more thing. Their French toast is the best I’ve had! They make it just the way my mother makes it. It’s a very simple recipe that doesn’t need much to shine. They aren’t overly sweet like how many French toasts are and are not stuffed with unnecessary bull shit. Come on in and visit them!
They’ve only been open for 2 years and are going to expand soon! So they are obviously doing well! I am extremely happy for them!

Pros: Good food, 4 stars. Had the Sunday breakfast buffet. The biscuits and green chile gravy were my favorite. Grits! Attentive staff with very good service. $ 26 for two buffets and drinks. Apparently made to order eggs can come with the meal– would have liked that information prior to filling my plate.
Con: The ladies bathroom was atrocious. Odd set up. Dirty toilet. Full trash. Dirty floors/​walls, dusty ceiling vent. Makes me wary of what the kitchen looks like.

Had the Santa Fe Pancakes. What an interesting combination of ingredients, but super good.
Can’t wait to come back to try the Cowboy burrito and the tamale omelet.

I’ve been going to Vick’s Vittles since it was Roper’s. .. and I’ve been enjoying their amazing Santa Fe Griddle Cakes since I first tried them «back in the day» at Grandma’s on Osuna. The savory combination of blue corn, pinons and cheddar-​jack cheese with a little maple syrup. .. you just have to try them! Another Vick’s favorite is the Cowboy Burrito with chicken fried steak, eggs and delectable green chile gravy. The servers are polite, efficient, and upbeat; their cowboy hats, flannel shirts and big smiles are icing on the cake!

Perfect french toast and bacon.
Hope it wasn’t a fluke. .will go back for linch.

How am I just trying this now?! So much selections. From breakfast, to sandwiches, to burgers. Just way too many to chose from. My husband and I was a little overwhelmed with the nice detailed menu. We settled with the smothered chicken fried steak and the cowboy burrito. Both were delicious. The chicken fried steak was crispy and tender.
Great service too. Everyone was attentive and friendly. The owner even takes his time to go to every table to talk and see how we’re doing. We’ll definitely be back to try the many choices. Maybe I’ll try the fish sandwich next time, or the Sunday breakfast buffet.

Thus far, this is the best breakfast place I’ve been to in ABQ. I can’t rave enough about the food. We got the French toast and country breakfast. The chicken fried steak was done to perfection! Moist, tender and not over cook. The French toast was also cook perfectly, not to moist or too brown. The flavor was also really good, not needing much syrup at all.
Added bonus, the have non-​dairy creamer to those (like me) who can’t have the dairy stuff. I was so thrilled to be able to have my coffee with breakfast.
Can’t wait to go back!

I love the broasted porkchop and enchiladas. For me, the portions are big. I was very satisfied with the food and friendly service! My daughter’s kid’s hamburger looks more like an adult’s burger. It was so good she ate it all. My husband ate his chorizo burrito called the buckboard breakfast burrito. My enchiladas’ the best with green chile. We will certainly come back especially for the breakfast buffet on Sunday mornings!

Wow, this place is something else! If you want to get your grub on, Vick’s will make you «Happier than a tornado in a trailer park.»
We dined on Halloween day, so I’m not sure if they were wearing costumes, or if they always wear cowboy hats? Nevertheless, the décor & the staff really pile it on thick here! There’s some serious country vitals here!
I had the The Buckboard Breakfast Burrito & it did NOT disappoint! Huge! Flavorful & smothered in green chili sauce. Though you can order it with red if you’re so inclined. My wife had the Pork Chop & Enchiladas, and it was a very stout pork chop & the enchiladas were very tasty. My daughter had a cheeseburger off the kids menu, and naturally they’re accustomed to feeding Texas kids! It was huge, I would have been satisfied with the size of that burger.
We liked it & we’ll be back! Though it’s in a crappy part of town, so much it warrants a security guard patrolling the parking lot! Nevertheless, all & all, it was good, enough so that you might say we were «Happy as a dead pig in the sunshine»!

Outstanding. Every single little piece of my breakfast is perfect. I cannot decide on a favorite. Definitely get something with green chile white gravy or order a side of it. How do the French say it? «Brilliant!»
Listen to other customers’ table talk at your own peril, there’s plenty of cuckoo to go around here (you’ll see).

I’ve been here a few times now, the food is always good, there’s live music and the staff is amazing. Chicken strips are what I recommend and get the green chile gravy it’s very tasty. I’m still loving this place after three or four visits and it’s a nice option for that down home cooking that you typically can only find at places like Cracker Barrel.
They also have a nice breakfast buffet on the weekend you might consider and they’ll cook eggs to order so you can get whatever style you want.

This is my very first review, so I hope this comes out right.
The Sunday breakfast buffet is the best I’ve had in years! There are regular scrambled eggs, and eggs with chorizo, as well as potatoes, assorted pancakes (the blue corn, green chili, piñon & cheese are OUTSTANDING!). Pinto beans, grits, tamales, enchiladas, and such are great. The biscuits are nice & soft/​fluffy, and the green chili gravy is phenomenal. I’m not the guy that ‘must have’ green chili in everything, but this was AWESOME! The thick sliced bacon is the best I’ve ever had. Every single thing my date and I had was truly great.
And the owner, Mr. Vick, was so happy to see us, and the most gracious host. The staff was very attentive and kind.
This was the greatest restaurant experience I’ve had in a long time!

We went here for a late lunch today (around 1:30). The Texas motif made me miss my home state. I loved that the servers and bus boys were wearing cowboy hats.
The food was not that impressive. I ordered the lunch combo of a half chicken salad sandwich, garden salad and green chili chicken tortilla soup. My husband ordered the Reuben with fries (FYI he judges all restaurants on their Reuben and how quickly they refill his tea).
My salad was the basic bagged salad but they added kale, mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese. I did appreciate that they kicked it up a notch. The chicken salad was bland it was just chicken, mayo and celery. some grapes and onion would have been nice. The soup was okay. My husband gave the Reuben a 7.
I will give them another try for breakfast because that seems to be their strongest.

I must preface this with the admission that as a New Mexican, I have anti-​Texan syndrome. ATS, abbreviated. I’m simply not a fan of the entire shebang; I take exception to those who consider themselves exceptional, I don’t trust ‘em, and history proves there’s plenty to support my neurosis. Simply put, Texas is what’s wrong with America. There, I said it. Honestly, if they really want to secede from the rest of the country, they can have at it. They can keep their crappy country gravy, Ol’ Boy politicians and infant debate about the righteous superiority of Ford vs. Chevy. New Mexicans shouldn’t breed with Texans, period.
Yet somehow, a visit to Vick’s Vittles manages to prove that a little culinary copulation can help bridge this chasm, and it all starts with with the country gravy. I’ve pitched this mantra for most of my adult life: white chocolate is not chocolate and white gravy is not gravy. At Vick’s, white gravy incorporates New Mexico’s holy grail, green chile, and the sauce is so incredible I’m tempted to eat my words about the gravy debate. Ain’t nothin’ sheepish about the heat in this here joint, so be prepared. The barbecue sauce is hot, the peach turnovers snuggle into green chile (brilliant), it’s everywhere, which is totally not the case in Texas.
Still, the place is indeed Texan. Chaps, longhorns and cowboy art deck the walls, and the plates are Texas HUGE, like, the biggest this side of the border, and insanely cheap. The baby back ribs are all grown up and hang off the edges of the plate. If I lived in relative vicinity to this place, I’d be a regular for breakfast (served all day) and my kids would come on weekend evenings for the music and family events. Listen to me, here, I sound like I’m actually coming around on the Lone Star State after just one visit to Vick’s. I reckon that just may be the case, pardner.
Scratch that. Screw Texas.
