ABC Cake Shop & Bakery

ABC Bakery was my mom’s go to Bakery when I was growing up, so I have used them since I was a young child. They have, unfortunately, gone down hill to the point that I will never order from them again. I ordered some fancy cupcakes from them for my daughter’s birthday. I was quoted an expensive price, paid for the cupcakes and placed the order. I was called a few days later and told I would need to pay .80 more per cupcake– ordered 30– if I wanted the cupcakes I ordered. I told them I just wanted to cancel the order in that case. I was told I would need to pay $ 20 to cancel. I prepaid for the cupcakes, which they make you. I was told the owner would call to rectify the situation. Never received a call and my cupcakes that I paid $ 2.00 a cupcake for looked horrible. They just made 30 cupcakes, same color as the ones I ordered but nothing else was the same. Very disappointed with their business ethics. Buyer beware they pull the old bait and switch!

But I ask you, how can anything this good, be sinful?
Decadence! = Unrestrained or excessive self-​indulgence.
But is decadence a good or bad thing?
Maybe I should also add «gluttony» to the list? Because all three came to my mind when I entered this place. It’s sinfully good, and it inspires decadence & gluttony. It’s an amazingly amazing place filled with slices of heaven… Or is that just what they want you to believe? Hmm?
My employer orders birthday cakes from this establishment exclusively whenever it’s one of our birthdays. She refuses to go anywhere else and I can see, or taste, why. They use a butter cream frosting opposed to those nasty sugary ones you’ll find in the big box bakeries.
It just so happens that I drive by this place daily on my way home, and last night I finally succumbed to that nagging pull. I stopped in and yes, I was like a true fat kid in a candy store. I was actually confused as I knew I couldn’t buy one of everything, so how do I choose? Obviously I didn’t want a cake, but why not little cakes? Yes, cupcakes! How can one go wrong with a variety of cupcakes? And hey, let’s top it off with a few cookie selections to boot!
I chose a couple red velvet cupcakes, some orange ones and, of course, a carrot cupcake. All were amazing! The cookies? Meh, nothing to really drool over, but I am comparing them to the cupcakes, so inevitably they fell short by comparison.
It is a bit pricey if you’re comparing it to your average grocery store cupcakes, but these are not your average grocery store cupcakes! Try some, I think you’ll be «Sinfully» pleased!

Here’s where I openly display wrist burn from my franchise handcuffs: as a parent of a lil’ one, I’m often responsible for purchasing sugary goods for birthday parties, and as an admitted procrastinator (and cheapskate), I typically shop box stores for baked goodies. When you’re tasked with satiating the tummies of a throng of kiddos, it’s tough to ditch the franchise options, particularly Wally World. My daughter loves cupcakes, that’s the treat she wanted for her fifth birthday, and I was scoping out the sorry options at Walmart when I made the call to ABC. Naturally, I was doing this the day before the party. ABC told me that they had a 48 hour policy for special orders, but I was welcome to visit the store and pick from what was already in stock.
I didn’t buy nuttin’ from Wally World, I went local. ABC was great. On a Saturday afternoon they offered enough vanilla, chocolate and red velvet cupcakes to handle the zombie invasion, and they had these awesomely cheap, commercial plastic finger rings for the cupcakes that ensured the girly girls could be Disney princesses while the boys could reinforce their gender stereotypes with superheroes (which are, unfortunately, overwhelmingly male). Big win for the entire crowd, big props for dad, all was well in the world.
ABC is worth a visit just for the spectacle. There are three display cases featuring plenty of cakes and baked yummies for whatever last-​minute procrastination you’re suffering from, and if you’re actually the type that plans things out (I bow down to you, dear planner) there are an absolute ton of other options, these people are giddy about festivities. Check out the wall displays for local high schools, or the themed cakes and delights. They’re geeky. And here’s a note: when you’re transporting cupcakes in your car, assure that the goods are on a level surface. Otherwise you’ll be resetting the plastic rings for the celebration and the presentation will appear absolutely #BurqueGhetto.

ABC Cake Shop & Bakery — Albuquerque, NM — I really want to love this Bakery so, but I just can’t entirely, but theyre alright. My sister in law had a few scares ordering her wedding cake from this bakery, ranging from a very poor filing system to a complete lack of communication from employees to one another. My situation was much the same. Also, on a birthday cake ordered by my mother about a month after all of this also experienced similar problems, so we’re not sure if we are going to order from them again, but anyway, here is my experience:
With some faith, I trusted them with my own wedding cake last year as well. I encountered the same problem twice with different employees regarding the poor filing system. They tried to charge me when I had already paid, twice. And, let me just add, I almost left here twice due to poor customer service because they tend to like to ignore those in their shop, or just be plain rude and snotty. You’ll notice other people have said similar things, and they’re all true I can imagine based on what I experienced.
Now, the bigger issue I had with them was partly my fault because about a month before I made some changes on how to color the cake, and while I sent a picture of a pink ombré effect, but I explicitly said to keep the colors we chose initially because they were my wedding colors. Day of the wedding, a barbie pink wedding cake is delivered (I ordered lilac/​purple ombré, so vastly different colors).
Nothing could be done, and luckily I did use some pinks so it didn’t entirely stick out like a sore thumb. While I was on our honeymoon they contacted me about the mistake and offered $ 100 refund, which was fine since it wasn’t a HUGE mistake by only being a color issue. That made the situation better, I don’t know what else they could have done, so at least they tried to remedy the problem, it’s not like they could have re-​done the cake last minute or anything.
Today when I went to pick up our anniversary cake, it was there on time ready to go and decorated nicely. I can applaud them for that, they taste great in both icing and cake flavors. They also had the best wedding cake deal I could find at the time. They offered to give you a free top tier as your anniversary gift too, so you don’t have to freeze one which I appreciated. They don’t keep track, so it’s up to you to remind them about 48 to 72 hours in advance. Also everyone that helped me in the past week or so with this cake was really nice, and the guy in the store that helped me today was really nice also, so it looks like maybe they are coming around. Don’t get me wrong though, this company has burned us several times, so I do not likely think we will be back. It’s nice that they have tried to fix their mistakes, but how about just not making them every single time we order? I understand human error, and that it happens, but it can’t be every single time someone orders something. Shame on us I guess for still trusting? Hmm.
Anyway, allll in all, I do like the store, but they did cause some unneeded stress and it seems to be a common problem. That’s why they get 3 instead of higher. So tread their waters carefully, and if you order a wedding cake save every receipt you have and keep on them to make sure everyone’s on the same page.

I’m very disappointed the out come of my daughter cake. I sent them a picture of how I wanted it and they told me it’s gonna coast about 252dollars. Then they told me they can always edit the cake to provide me with the same over all appearance (just simplified) but to fit within my budget. Which I completely agreed and the price went down to 130. Trusted them with their works. Yesterday when I saw the cake after my daughter dad picked it up I was blown away how ugly the cake was for the price. Wasn’t even near close looking like the cake I wanted in the picture I sent them. I was embarrassed even having it at the party. 130 dollars for a cake like that when I could have bought a Walmart cake cheaper than that and looks 100x better!!!

So disappointed! I’ve gotten just sheets of cake from ABC in the past and have had no problems. I suck at baking but love making awesome cakes for my son… last year was a 3D fire truck:) Their customer service was great and so was the quality and price! This year, after my failed baking attempt I called in an order. Not impressed with the ladies attitude at all:(AND over $ 45 for 3 9inch round pucks/​sheets! Just the cake part! WTF?! Only 10% off for just the cakes wrapped… no filling/​frosting/​decorating?! BS! She told me their prices went up. I will never be going back to ABC… got Whole Foods to bake for me, $ 15 total! That’s more like it! Good luck staying in business ABC! Total rip off!

ABC has been my go-​to cake shop for much of my life, however, I doubt I will return after my experience today.
Despite having ordered my cake a week in advance (and moving pick-​up time up by 24 hours four days before it was supposed to be), the cake was not ready when we arrived to pick it up. This was after numerous hick-​ups along the way:
–Although we had asked to only pay the 50% deposit on the cake when we ordered it, we were charged the full amount instead. It was frustrating, but I haven’t had a terrible cake when I’ve picked up prior orders, so I mistakenly assumed that the cake would be fine as every other one has been.
–As noted above, we requested on Friday that our order be ready on Tuesday at 5, rather than Wednesday as we had originally asked. The representative on the phone seemed less than thrilled to be speaking with us. She noted this change on paper order sheet, but didn’t update the order in their electronic system, which is why my cake wasn’t ready when we arrived this afternoon
–Finally, my cake hadn’t even been made when we arrived to pick it up at 5:20 (ordered for 5pm) and ABC initially chose not to be honest about their error. Bryan (who is the only redeeming quality of this experience!!) notified another employee about the issue, and a woman, who I’m assuming was some sort of manager, came out to let us know that they were «finishing up the floral decorations». I was pretty sure that this was BS and later confirmed that it was when the cake was ready at 5:50. Unfortunately, the cake was a huge disappointment. There is only so much you can do to a cake in 30 minutes and ABC really dropped the ball by giving us this cake. Despite the cruddy situation, Bryan was a sweetheart! He apologized profusely and likely sensing my disappointment, he comp’ed us two cupcakes. I really appreciate his effort and honesty!
Although I appreciate the cupcakes, they aren’t sufficient for rectifying this error and ABC management should know better. I completely understand that things occasionally fall through the cracks, however, they should have been honest about this error upfront and worked with us on a solution. I was so embarrassed by the cake and disappointed by the fact that they were fine sending me off with this cake that I didn’t feel comfortable asking for a refund. Having worked with difficult costumers before, I didn’t want to make a scene over a less-​than-​appealing cake. If management had been honest upfront, I would have much rather waited till the next day to pick up a cake that was worth the $ 24 that we had unwillingly paid, rather than the cake that was thrown together at the last minute.
We could have gotten a cake for at least $ 10 cheaper at a grocery store, albeit a lower quality cake, but I would be getting the cake I expected and of the quality that I had paid for. I’ll be sure not to make the same mistake by ordering from ABC in the future.

Impeccable customer service as always. If you’ve read my previous reviews for ABC you know I’m being sarcastic. After waiting 15 minutes to even be acknowledged and listening to the guy behind the counter grumble about the «phone ringing all day» I left without ordering. They obviously get enough business since they are complaining about being busy. ABC!!! READ YOUR REVIEWS! Your poor customer service is unacceptable. You are a cake shop, not the DMV. A smile would go a long way

What a disappointment! Albuquerque being the largest small town that it is, has very few good bakeries left. I can remember as a kid getting an ABC cake for most any occasion. As an adult we have used ABC almost exclusively as well, from birthday cakes, to wedding cakes, to reveal cakes, king cakes, etc. I mention that only to express the point that we have spent a lot of money there over the years. The customer service here is TERRIBLE! Being locally owned you would assume that a sense of pride be taken not just in your product but how you treat your customers. Upon putting in our last order we asked for a manager because we couldn’t get a straight answer on the product we were ordering or a set price. The manager came out only to demean my wife and insult her. I have called and left messages for the owners to call over half a dozen times but not one has been returned my call. It’s a shame that they don’t care about long standing business. We will never go back as we would prefer to eat crappy boxed cake rather than be treated with such distain!

I’ve used their services about 4 time. Although their cakes are nicely decorated and flavorful, their customer service is not good. I’m always anxious ordering because they are so snooty and rude. Smiles are non existent. Because of this, I now go to Swiss Alps where their customer service is good, food yummy, prices are cheaper, and they decorate lovely cakes! I used them for 2 birthdays and was not disappointed!

As a new patron, I was VERY disappointed with customer service-​from the manager, no less! I went into the bakery with an idea of what I wanted, but who knew how many choices go into ordering a cake?! Immediately, it was obvious she lacked patience with me because I didn’t have a clear idea of the cake I wanted up front. I almost said forget the order and wanted to walk out but I did need a cake for my daughter’s birthday for the upcoming weekend. I will say when I went back a few days later to pick up the cake the guy who helped me was really pleasant and helpful. Also, the cake turned out super and it was GOOD.
I happened to mention my experience at the bakery to my coworker the next day and she had the exact same complaint! Poor customer service and a lack of patience from the staff when she ordered some cookies for an event at her kids school. She said she didn’t realize how many choices of sizes, flavors, etc. there were for cookies and the girl was a bit snippy with her. Word of advice to the staff at ABC Bakery: you attract more bees with honey not vinegar! You may know your products very well, but have more patience for the first-​time customer who is willing to spend money in your business for a special occasion. Not sure if I would return to your business based on that first experience even though the cake was quite tasty. If you read through some of the other reviews you will see there is a theme of poor customer service experiences… what a shame! If you like making cakes, but not serving customers then maybe you should be working in the back!

Ok, it was really good (if expensive) cake. Maybe I’ll just be sure to order ahead next time.

I called ABC Cakes last week to place an order. I needed to have a deposit which I did not have at the time. I was told that my order would be placed in the pending file. I called today, and a very rude woman answered the phone and abruptly said she was with another customer and placed me on hold. I remained on hold for about 10 minutes. Another woman picked up the line and they were not able to find my order. She sounded agitated to be on the phone. I firmly expressed I would be calling another place for my cakes. I used to love ABC Cakes — they made my wedding cake 9 years ago. I now get the feeling that they KNOW they are great and therefore slack on the customer service which in my book is he most important.

I decided to pay a visit to the actual store because my numerous phone calls went unanswered.
Walked in, immediately took a number (#1) and my number was called shortly after. Showed the teenager at the counter my ticket and requested for a custom cake estimate. She took me to a counter where a second, frazzled employee was already helping a couple and she asked me to wait.
Frazzled employee suggested that I look at sample cakes on a nearby computer. However, when she showed me to the computer, it was in the process of shutting down. So, she told me to look around while she finished up with the people she was already helping
While waiting, numbers 2 – 15 were called and the employee that originally said she would help me disappeared. Needless to say, I left without an estimate.

I have been coming to ABC for nearly 20 years. The cakes are pretty good, and the buttercream icing is the best in town. Their icing is what has me return in spite of some issues. Their cookies are marginal. Their prices in the past were excellent. They renovated a few years ago, and along with the slight upgrade to the shop’s interior, the price of their goods rose astronomically.
Also what has changed over the years is their customer service. Used to be decent. Over the last couple years, it’s become increasingly deplorable. Very unfriendly staff, often even rude! Buying sweets should be a pleasant experience. Here, I often walk out with a bad taste in my mouth from the service I just received.
Note: the last birthday cake I ordered came with a little surprise. I ordered a white cake with buttercream filling and frosting. When we ate it, we discovered there was peanut butter in a good portion of it, but not the whole cake. It was a pretty disturbing and disgusting addition that we didn’t expect. ABC is lucky no one in my family has a peanut allergy or they might have found themselves in a world of hurt. But finding the peanut butter in the cake makes me wonder what other items, food or otherwise, might end up in their cakes?

Ordered a birthday cake for a friend’s party at home, and it tasted just like cake! Nothing extraordinary or amazing. It looked good and tasted good.

1. Just went in for a couple pieces of cake and noticed the lack of ethnicities that were represented among the counter people the last time I checked in. Whassup’, ABC? Are you taking a step back? I thought you guys finally cracked through the color barrier and managed to hire a few people that better represented Albuquerque and New Mexico? Now, we are back to square one.
2. The service behind the counter was seriously lacking. There was no friendly service. The staff IGNORED me until I stood behind a customer who was cashing out after hanging around the counter while other people — who had come in five to seven minutes behind me — were waited on first. UGH!!! Maybe we need to get back to the «number system» where customers grab a number and wait to hear their number called. Simple. Fair. But, what could be more simpler than just being FAIR and non-​discriminatory, eh’…ABC?
It will be awhile before I head back. I hope to see more friendly faces next time and a few more counter people who actually can open their mouths to speak to customers than ignoring them. I get better service down the road at Swiss Alps Bakery who are totally cool with anybody who walks into their establishment.

Have had the pleasure of working with ABC over the past 10 years, so many cakes I visioned and ABC Cake Shop always created the exact vision I wanted, from elaborate Birthdays, to Women’s Glamorous & Fabulous events to beautiful Birthday memories ABC will always be The Cake Shop to fulfill my exclusive request! Thanks again to Paul & all the staff over the years who made wonderful memories to last a life time!

Is there a way I can give this place like eleven stars? I live very close by and have tasted many of the decadent delights of ABC Bakery. It is heavenly. The buttercream frosting is otherworldly (and I swear, a cure for PMS!) My boyfriend’s favorite is the raspberry Napoleon, mine is the vanilla éclair. I tell you, these pastries are pieces of f*cart. They are gorgeous and delicious.
Definitely try: Lemon Lover’s Cupcake, Cherries Jubilee Cupcake, Devil Dog Cake (OMG SO GOOD), crème puffs (the whipped crème here is DIVINE), any éclair, or the strawberry shortcake– can’t recommend that one enough, and it’s enough for two! Don’t skip the danish, either. These are buttery, otherworldly treats nothing like what’s previously passed for danish in your life.
The staff is always really attentive and patient. They still haven’t asked me why I eat pastries for breakfast and sometimes lunch every day, so I consider them pretty polite, too :) But really, they work very hard and do a great job.
I realize this review has a lot of exclamation points and caps lock, but I’m passionate about good bakeries. I grew up in New Orleans, home of some of the best food on Earth, and ABC reminds me of bakeries back home.
Give this place if you haven’t already, it’s heavenly! It’s worth the drive– I’m lucky enough to live just a couple miles away!
