Love this business! It’s very eclectic and is great for both small and large items. They also offer custom reclaimed wood furniture and other items. The employees, albeit quite busy the first time I was there, did a great job helping me out with what I was looking for. I bought some cool old military antiques and old picture prints of Albany. I plan on having a custom coffee table made soon as well. Prices seemed quite fair, and the custom made stuff is incredibly well done. If you just want a cheap plain table or something, go to IKEA or something like that, for a high quality and custom made piece, this is the place to go to imo. The prices for custom made furnishings are not very expensive especially when you consider everything that goes into it.

I still absolutely love this place! The last time I went, they were selling large prints of vintage photographs of major landmarks in Albany and I ended up buying two of them.
They have a great selection of vintage furniture and home goods, and a lovely selection of DIY projects. I also love all their reclaimed wood finished pieces, if we lived in our own home instead of renting in an apartment, I’d buy a piece. But since we’re in a tiny apartment, no room. :(

Certainly not the nicest and most welcoming establishment around (actually quite snooty) but its decent browsing. Mostly junky stuff but with enough creativity and cash, a treasure could be had.

Silver fox is a terrific place to browse around, get ideas for your home, and find really cool odds and ends to suit just about any purpose. Their staff take salvaged materials and make beautiful furniture, custom tailored to just about any need. One guy spent some time showing me a custom-​built bar they were working on for a local restaurant; I guess they’re renovating the entire interior for the owner from reclaimed wood!
Their staff has always been super friendly and helpful! On another trip they showed me a cool toy they’d made in their spare time with a laser pointer and a bunch of mirrors mounted on a motor, which created all sorts of interesting shapes and designs of light. It was just scrap material before they got to it (besides the laser pointer, I’m sure!)
I’ve brought several friends to Silver Fox to look around. It’s really quite an experience. Their prices are reasonably high (they do all their work by hand, after all), but just the experience of browsing can be quite fun… and if you find something you like, all the better!

Another shop that screamed «my kind of place» from the barbed-​wire chain-​link fencing enclosing the architectural remnants to the yard of reclaimed wood to the incredible wonderland of old-​house objects on the inside.
It’s not quite the salvage yard for old houses I was hoping for, with a gazillion of every type of thing (for instance, trying to find matching door knobs and door hinges for a house restoration project), but it’s a wonderful array of things ranging from vintage furniture and fixtures to small art treasures to the types of objects you can’t really identify but look cool. They’ve got some prefabbed (mostly) concrete garden sculptures outside mixed in with heavy fixtures, old slabs of marble, metal machine parts and standpipes, et alia. It’s mostly residential (as opposed to industrial) in origin so the art-​object-​assembler in me was slightly disappointed, but there’s plenty of tinkertoys in this box for those who like to make something new out of a number of old parts.
Some notes:
— they don’t have too many doors, the ones they have are mostly for a particularly special characteristic of some sort. Similarly they’re light on any plumbing items (as opposed to the Habitat for Humanity store).
— the reclaimed wood was a bit so-​so, and they’re storing it outside, although some of the furniture projects they have made from reclaimed wood they have for sale looked nice, albeit at a premium price. They don’t buy wood at this point, I was told, although they do buy other things.
— I don’t know whether they’re amenable to haggling; I didn’t have any purchases in mind in my survey-​stop the other day that were worth haggling over, but since a lot of the pieces seemed to have antique prices for nice-​junk quality, I am hoping they will.
I’ll have to make a few repeat visits to assess the vibrancy of the place — any used shop is, in my opinion, only as good as how much they refresh their stock — but it is the «worth a special trip» kind of place if you’re into vintage, old houses, or the unusual.

Ohhhh… if you are a junk shop junkie WITH a discerning eye or penchant for the DIY (like me), you NEED to go here! It looks like a busted out garage behind (RIP) the Miss Albany Diner and the only advertisement on Broadway is a little, handpainted sandwich board sign. GO TO THERE.
Parking — no problem.
Entrance — a yard full of junk — mannequins, old oil and gas drums with graphics, rusty things, doors, amusement park rides, more mannequins, statues.
Inside — architectural salvage of molding, windows, lights, mirrors, furniture. Not only does Silver Fox have quality salvage and antiques, but these guys actually craft new furniture out of reclaimed wood or pieces you bring/​buy! And their prices are excellent!
My only word of advice is that if you see something you like, buy it on the spot. It WILL be gone if you try to go back for it later. I speak from experience. :(

(I wondered why «Silver Fox Antiques» had not been reviewed before discovering they are actually the genial proprietors in the center of the «at the warehouse» building. So this review applies to both.)
This is a bazaar housed in an old warehouse and well worth a visit if you are dining at the nearby Miss Albany Diner (the vibe is complementary) or looking for that odd whatever. At first glance it looks like a lifetime’s accumulation from a schizophrenic packrat but at closer glance you’ll find distinct «stores» in different areas of the space selling architectural salvage, ceramics, old comic books, seashells, woodworkers’ curiosities… you get the idea. Some of the proprietors are burrowed in among their stuff, either working on restorations or chatting with one another; if the stuff doesn’t appear to have an owner you negotiate for it with the nice folks at the checkout in the center.
One room is a hardwood floor dance/​yoga studio (rents by the hour for special events) with fireplace mantels lining the walls. If you go on the weekend you’ll also find a café serving sandwiches and soup and a tarot reader and, well, who knows what else. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
