Dr. Lee diagnosed my step-​daughter a few months ago. We were told that she needed what are known as pre-​treatment. Basically, we pay $ 4k for her pre-​treatment now. She will have this contraption for 6 – 18 months. She will then have no form of braces for 0 – 24 months. The next step is for us to pay ANOTHER $ 4−5k for the actual braces.
Growing up with braces and having 2 sisters and numerous friends with braces — I’ve never heard of such a thing as pre-​treatment. For many years braces have worked just dandy for many people. So why should we pay for pre-​treatment? And why should we pay for pre-​treatment when her teeth are straight and not crowded? Yeah, that’s the $ 8,000 question my dear readers!
Pre-​treatment can correct thumb sucking, abnormal swallowing and speech problems (per Dr. Lee’s website). Fantastic! Too bad my step-​daughter doesn’t have any of these problems.
It can do a few helpful things such as «regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth» — again, I say FANTASTIC! and too bad she doesn’t have any of these problems either.
While I will openly admit that I am not a trained orthodontist, I do have what I like to call common sense. This is something a lot of people (doctors & parents alike) lack. However, being a business savvy women I can appreciate the need for independent doctors to make money, lots and lots of money. Dr. Lee and his fellow orthodontic specialists who have decided collectively that pre-​treatment is the way to go, and that only evil parents would withhold this from their thumb-​sucking children, have found a money maker!
Does that make me an evil parent? No. No it doesn’t. I see the $ 4k that could have been saved for college. While I agree pre-​treatment is a good idea for those children who are unfortunate to have horrible teeth (I’m British, I know about horrible teeth!), it’s not suitable for children who have «normal» teeth that can be fixed with the typical treatment — braces.
Dr. Lee and his staff push pre-​treatment. Do they care what the families financial situation is? No.
And that brings me to my last qualm with Dr. Lee and his staff…
Linda. We told Linda that we needed to move an appointment that was set for 1pm. My husband called and she just said she will not change the appointment — there is time available in the afternoon, but no, she won’t change it. When I spoke to lovely Linda she told me, and I quote: «The template will not allow me to schedule her appointment for a later time.» She again verified that there was time available in the afternoon, but would/​could not book our appointment for this later time. Well thanks for your help Linda! So glad you are here to help the people who give you $ 8,000 for a $ 4,000 procedure.
Linda said she would call us back on Monday. She never did. We called on Tuesday, she was «busy» and we were told she would call us back. Did she? Ummm, nope!
Again, thank you for the unnecessary pre-​treatment (which was authorized by the bio-​mom of my step-​daughter who was conned into believing this treatment was necessary) and thank you for the wonderful customer service. I’ll be sure to recommend all my friends to you… oh wait, no, I won’t. I’ll write a review on
and utilize my freedom of speech amendment, or something like that, to steer business away from you.
