History

Established in 1999.

After returning home from 5 years in the United States Army I began working for another deck restoration outfit. I spent approximately 4 years during the day gaining experience in the trade repairing and refinishing all sorts of wood structures (including cedar and redwood siding), and at night I went to junior college to gain knowledge in business and in marketing. After a those years of working for someone else, I thought with my professionalism, discipline and skills I learned in the military on how to be a leader, I could be a better businessman than who I was working for at the time. And since my workmanship was/​is very detailed and clean I knew I had all the skills needed to start Deck Doctors. I applied for my first contractors license, took the test and received it in 1999. I just received my second contractors license in 2013 which allows me to do new construction and remodels of decks and many other types of wood structures including siding.

My name is Richard Alvarado owner/​operator of Deck Doctors. I’m 42 years of age and I live in Danville California. I spent five years in the United States Army and recieved an honorable discharge.

I have two contractors licenses, the first license I obtained in 1999 which is the C33 (painting) license. The second license I obtained is the C61/​D41 (Decking & Siding) specialty license which I received in 2013. The specialty License C61/​D41 allows me to do new construction and major repairs on most wood structure and siding.

Richard worked with us to stain 3 decks and paint our fence lines, back retaining wall and upper and lower deck rails. It was a job that took awhile to complete because we were faced with the challenge of the rainy weather and a few color mishaps on the part of the paint store.
However, Richard stayed on top of it and went out of his way to deal with the store, exchange the paint several times and come back out to finish the job the way he intended. He paid attention to detail and really coached his team to meet his expectations. His team was friendly, professional and really considerate about being on the property.
We faced one communication challenge early on, but Richard not only acknowledged it, we discussed it and he made sure that from that point forward, he was super communicative about scheduling and any changes whenever they came up. I really appreciated his taking responsibility and then making sure that he met my expectations going forward.
The decks and fences look great and Richard made sure that even with the weather delays, he stayed on top of it and made sure it got completed. He definitely takes pride in his work and we were pleased with the end result!

Richard came out on December 10 to inspect the project and said he would get back to us in a few days with an estimate. After not hearing anything back for a couple of weeks, I called and left messages multiple times through January 7. Never heard a word back.

Richard is a detail-​oriented professional who takes an enormous amount of pride in his work. It is very clear he treats your deck as if it was his own.
Meticulous work. Impeccable results. He wants to see your deck «shine».
He is overly communicative about scheduling & sequencing, he’ll help you move furniture off (or do it all himself — but I insisted), provide color samples so you can choose the right finish and won’t leave until you’re happy.
The level of service provided for my initial staining leaves me with no one else to call 2 or 3 years down the road for a re-​finishing. I will not search for anyone else.

Richard and Jason did a great job on my ancient falling-​apart deck. They replaced the wood rot areas, did the sanding/​power-​washing and painting in a timely fashion. Our house was built in 1926, added onto in the 1940’s and 90’s etc. I had done some work on the deck since we moved in 20 years ago, but it was getting pretty rundown. They fixed it so now it will be fine for years to come. (they applied two coats of a four-​times regular-​thickness paint.) Richard even used his truck to help me transport some personal items that didn’t fit in my Honda van. Deck Doctors worked fine for me!

I called and spoke directly with Richard last week. He is very cordial and was available to review my job the following day. I found him professional by phone as after he suggested a time — he change course suggesting that he had family plans and wanted to allow for enough time to insure he could commit to his agreed upon 1 hour time window.
The following day he was a no show. I called to and left a message to see if he was running late or sidetracked with his family. Immediately he sent a text indicating that he was talking with a customer and would call me in 10. When he didn’t call back, I left another voice mail followed by a text in the hopes to reconnect and determine if he intended to make it later or reschedule. Again, no response.
I don’t mind a change of plans. That’s life — but I do like to be notified. Nobody likes to be blown off. However, our conversation the previous day lead me to believe and appreciate that he valued the time of his clients. In this case, clearly he did not.
Deck Doctor may well do good work — there certainly are a number of positive reviews that suggest that. However, upon looking at other reviews — I am not the first customer who’s time wasn’t appreciated.

Wish I had taken the other reviews more seriously. No show. Waste of time. Disrespectful. We have to call over 5x to get anyone to call us back (a bad sign to begin). Then we had an appointment with Richard that he cancelled the day before and rescheduled. Then on the rescheduled day, he never showed and after multiple calls never even called back to apologize.
This whole process set us back a month on our project and now we have to start looking for someone else.
Richard had no regard for wasting our time and clearly has no clue how to run a business or doesn’t care enough to try.

Called set up an Appointment they no called no showed, I called 2 times and left 2 voicemails no answer and no returned phone call. Id trust previous comments on here of the same behavior. On to the next deck repair company.

Deck Doctors did an awesome job on my deck. The deck is 9 years old and had been sealed a few times, although not professionally or particularly well. It took 3 days just to strip and sand the deck before the sealing process could begin.
Richard’s crew is courteous and they maintain a clean work site. As a result, the process was quite enjoyable.
It’s interesting that some of the reviews relate situations where the home owner never heard from Richard at all. I really can’t speak to that. Maybe I was just lucky, but that was not my experience.

Richard and his crew did a great job on our deck. We live near water and our deck needed extensive repair. His crew was professional and did a great job repairing the deck. Richard was very professional and responsive to our questions. He had good follow through on what he promised. We will use Deck Doctors again when it is time to refinish our deck.

Richard and his crew were polite, conscientious and did a great job on my deck and brick. They were both power washed, cleaned, sealed (bricks) and refinished (30+ year old redwood deck). Richard also kept an eye out for dry rot and termites, saving me future problems. My deck and brick feel like new and I’m enjoying my yard again. I never had a problem getting in touch with Richard or getting a response to my calls.

Richard just finished my deck rebuild and refinishing project. The rebuild was large and difficult so I was amazed at how fast it was completed. Coming in ahead of the scheduled completion time! Quality of the craftsmanship was outstanding. Highly recommend!!! 5 star service!!!

First: I will say that the work that Richard did on our decks and other wood surfaces was great. It looks beautiful and feels like it will last.
However, the two-​star rating has everything to do with his customer service. While this was a 2 – 3 day project, it took a couple of WEEKS to complete due to Richard repeatedly not showing up when he said he would, and going dark on me for several days without any communication.
It turned out he was experiencing a family emergency that needed tending to — that part is okay. However, instead of being upfront and contacting me to let me know what the situation was and that there would be a delay in the project, he just did not respond to any emails or phone calls for three days, while our deck was completely vulnerable to the elements and all our plants/​pots were cluttering up the other yard space. Once I finally threatened to have the job completed elsewhere, he finally reached back out to me. However, even after that he did not show up to complete the project on time. The final day or so of work got dragged out to 2 or 3 because he didn’t come when he said he would.
Very frustrating to work with this contractor. Unfortunate — if customer service and prompt communication had been a higher priority, this would have been a five-​star review!

I recently needed to make repairs and refinish my two-​tiered deck. The bottom section had several boards that we’re breaking (dry rot) which made the deck unsafe. I obtained 4 bids, all seemed very professional. However Deck Doctors (Richard) was the most personable and seemed to really care about my project. I had used DD about 5 years ago for a refinishing and was pleased then also. Deck Doctors bid was very competitive. When additional dry rot was found once the lower tier was removed, Richard worked with me to make sure the additional repairs were appropriate and within my budget by giving me a couple different options and discussing the pros and cons of each. He also kept in touch with me via cell phone on project progress and any delays/​issues. The entire project took about 6 days. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome. My deck is now safe and good looking! I will be using Deck Doctors (Richard) again.

Recently bought a home in Pleasant Hill and needed the front yard and backyard patio/​decks to be done. I was referred to Deck Doctor’s by a co-​worker of mine so I checked out some of their pictures on Deck Doctor’s Instagram, and gave them a call. I called and left a voicemail for Richard and we followed up two days later when we scheduled a time for him to come by. My boyfriend and I had him take a look at both the front and back deck and patio. After that he gave me an estimate based on the work we wanted done & he was scheduled to start the following Monday. The job came out how we hoped it would and his workers kept their work area clean and made sure everything was out of the way by the time the day was over. The weather was not so good over the couple of weeks we had Deck Doctors scheduled to work, so the job took a little longer than we had hoped due to the rain, but when it was complete we were happy with the results.!! Definitely recommend Richard and his team. Thanks guys

Deck Doctors are doctors! I recently purchased a new home. The back yard and deck looked horrible. I was ready to start over and had Richard over for an estimate. He did arrive on time for our appointment and was very easy to talk to. After a look around he made some suggestions to brighten things up. I had know idea what he could do to the deck and fence… The price was fair and after the job was completed. I would say well worth it in the end my back yard looks like a whole new place. My wife really enjoy entertaining in our back yard are now. The deck and fence look like new and the finish is perfect. I would highly recommend Deck Doctors and Richard for any deck or fence job. The team works fast and cleaned up every day after the job.

My experience was exactly like A.C. From walnut creek. I called and set up an appointment and he never showed up. He didn’t even give me the common curtsy of a phone call to reschedule or tell me he wasn’t coming. I read the other reviews and figured I had a 50% chance of him showing up, I figured I had better odds since it is winter! Nope, not a chance, this guy must be flakey.
