History

Established in 1980.

Crab Cove has been providing «Adventures by the Bay» for families, school children, and adults. People get a glimpse of Bay wildlife and their homes, both over and under the water, through interactive exhibits and aquariums in the visitor center. There’s also a brief history of the site, formerly known as the «Coney Island of the West,» which later became the Merchant Marine Officer’s Training Center, then a State Beach. Crab Cove is the first Marine Reserve designated by the State of California on an estuary. Visitors can learn about the Bay inside the Center, then explore outdoors in the Cove and find crabs, barnacles, and other intertidal animals at low tide — be sure to check a tide chart to choose a date and time to visit, otherwise you may end up just enjoying the sand and water at high tide. Picnicing or playing on the expansive lawns is also lots of fun!
