Specialties

Changing Gears (formerly named Cycles of Change APC) is a non-profit community bike shop located on the former naval air station in Alameda, California. It’s fiscally sponsored by Earth Island Institute in Berkeley.

Changing Gears offers used bicycle sales, full-service repairs, paid job training for formerly homeless adults, earn-a-bike opportunities for youth and adults, a community repair shop, and volunteer opportunities for all.

The mission is to empower local communities by offering recycled bicycle services that are safe, vibrant, creative, and self-sustaining.

In 2007, we won «Best Bike Shop» from the East Bay Express.

In 2009, we won 2nd place in voting for Best Bike Shop in the Bay Area on SF Gate.

In addition in 2009, we won Best Bicycle Recycler in Alameda Magazine.

History

Established in 2006.

Started in 2006 with a grant from Stopwaste.org, Changing Gears has steadily grown and expanded. Changing Gears receives over a thousand bicycle donations a year, and keeps over 30,000 pounds of bicycles and parts from going to the landfills each year.
