Alameda Dog Exercise Area

OMG. THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR BAY AREA ROAD TRIP!
As confusing as making it to Alameda is, this dog park is extremely easy to find. Lots of parking, double gated, and it. Is. HUGE. Plenty of wide open spaces combined with tree lined/​grassy areas for dogs to run around and feel like they’re freeeee! (With tall perimeter fences of course.)
It was an absolute perfect day, with the sun shining and the wind blowing, and there were just owners and dogs everywhere. Some were chillin, others were more playful, but overall it was a perfect place to just be left alone for the most part. Roxy got her socializing in, and lots of exercise for sure.
We will DEFINITELY be coming back here on our next trip to the Bay Area. Although it is a little out of the way, it is totally worth it. The park is clean, everyone is friendly, and the dogs are adorable!

The amount of dog aggression that is allowed under the guise of «playing» is stunning.
There is one dog walker with a cowboy hat who «trains» dogs and claims to be a «well known trainer». He is an idiot with little control over his dogs or ego. He is over the 3 dog limit by at least 3 – 4 dogs and it makes it very difficult for him to watch his charges.
The most responsible people I have seen here are pit bull owners! And I am no fan of pitties, myself. But, they seem to be on top of their dogs at this park.
I have seen a pack of 5 Huskies attack a Yorkie and the Yorkie owner be blamed and berated afterwards. I have watched a Malinois try to rip a Ridgeback’s balls off (no kidding).
Too bad. The place could great. But, it is the perfect example of why REAL dog trainers tell people to avoid dog parks.

My favorite dog park around the east bay to take my dog! I have a Shiba Inu named Cooper who loves other dogs, enjoys running around, and has horrible recall. His horrible recall makes this Alameda dog park the perfect place for me to take him. It’s a pretty large fenced dog park which gives Cooper enough space to run all he wants while still being small enough for me to keep track of him. I’ve been to places like Point Isabel and Fort Funston which has tons of space but it’s harder for me to keep track of my dog cause he doesn’t like to come back to me unless he wants to. This has led to some very long walks on the beach where he appears to be walking me instead of the other way around.
In general, the dogs and owners here are very friendly and responsible. Most owners pick up after their dogs and pay attention to their dogs so fights don’t happen. There have been moments where my dog has gotten bullied/​picked on but owners are pretty good about stepping in and calming their dogs down. This dog park seems popular enough that there’s always a few dogs to play with whenever I come but not too crowded on weekends so all the dogs have enough space to run around. There are plenty of trash bins and shovels for picking up after your dog. I like that the place has a mixture of grass and sand. The sand part is more of a love/​hate relationship. It’s soft for dogs to run on but always gets in my shoes unless I wear boots. The sand is also really bad if it starts to rain while you’re there. My dog is also picky about picking up sandy tennis balls sometimes. These are just small complaints though as overall, the sand is a good thing! This dog park has a big dog section and a small dog section. When Cooper was a smaller puppy I would usually switch around between the two but now that he’s 20lbs, he’s a little too big to play with the tiny chihuahuas in the small dog section so I always take him straight to the big dog section. Whenever my dog gets too tired of playing with other dogs, he usually runs to the water fountain for a quick drink. I’ve noticed the water fountain area appears to be a safe zone for dogs. All the dogs put play on hold while in that area and will resume once they leave. How amusing.
Overall, an awesome large fenced dog park to take your friendly pup.

We’re pretty spoiled living just a block away from this dog park. My dog and I love it. It’s big, has a large and small dog area, lots of sun and shade areas, and it’s fairly close to the walking trails along the waterfront.

We love this dog park. There is a large area for big dogs and smaller area for little dogs. We’ve lived in several states and cities with various dog parks. I like this one a lot because it’s big and spacious. There are some grassy areas and some sandy areas which is nice for their paws. Other dog parks we’ve gone to have gravel or concrete. My dog likes to play with other dogs and there are always at least a few dogs there every time we go.

A dog park is only as good as its owners. A WARNING TO ALL: Due to a horribly socialized dog and owner at this park, my pup wound up with two severe lacerations needing 8 staples and cost me $ 300.
This owner deserves far worse than this, but I’m providing a detailed description so that if you ever see him, tell him to get the hell out of there.
He is a wiry fellow, often in painters’ clothes. His dog is a german shepherd mix that is always biting dogs’ tails. He barely pays attention to what his dog is doing and pays no heed when it is consistently upsetting many other dogs in the park.
If you see him, tell him to leave. If he doesn’t, record his dog and call the police. I wish I had caught it on tape so I could take him to court and ban him from the park forever.

Great park for large and small dogs. OWNERS need to make sure they close one gate before opening the other to prevent dogs from running out to the street. Yesterday one of the dogs got out because of an inconsiderate owner.
Also, this is a DOG park, not a place to bring toddlers to play in the sand. Too many parents bring kids and pets and are bothered when dogs jump on their kids. Hey, asses, it’s a DOG park. Take your little ones to the kids park up the street if you don’t want dogs jumping on them!

Nothing over the top here… just a dog park where your dog can run amuck and have an occasional fight. Works …

My dog loves this place! It is the biggest fenced off dog park in the Bay Area.

I really loved taking my Louie Jasper to this dog park. It was the best dog park I have ever been to. I love the sand. Much better than dirt that turns into mush. It is such a huge park and the free parking helps. I didn’t like the place for the water. It was all muddy and there was only one watering hole. I wish there was another water for the dogs. Very well kept. My little wheaten terrier 7month male had a great time!

My favorite things about this place are the open plentiful space, sand, and the fact that there are always several dogs that my pup can be social and play with.
Another plus is plenty of parking and a nearby restroom in case you need it. I wish they had bags as some owners don’t pick up after their dogs (not sure that’s the reason but might be helpful).
Otherwise, my dog loves this spot!

My pup loves this place. Great enclosed space for large and small dogs. Soft sand for the dogs ro run on so their paws dont get torn up. Beautiful bay view and plenty of walking paths if off leash isnt your thing.

This dog park in Alameda is always busy and crowded with people and dogs. There is a small dog area where small dogs can run around. I for one, have no small dogs, only big dogs, so it is nice to be able to not worry about the little yappers mos of the time, although I have seen some in the large dog area in the past. There is sometimes a human groups here that are kind of like a clique — I don’t generally like them because they tend to be more engaged in their conversation and not attentive to what their dogs are doing. This dog park is much nicer than the other exercise area (by the base), but it can get crowded with not so savvy dog owners and dogs with not so good social manners, so watch out and leave if there are inappropriate humans and dogs. The dog park is generally clean and fairly well maintained.

Having been to a lot of East Bay dog parks here are my thoughts on this one:
Positives: Very large space. Quite a few free parking spots close by. Benches/​chairs to sit on and quite a bit of shade to sit or stand under.
Negatives: The sand isn’t ideal at all. At times there are certainly bigger dogs that can be a little overwhelming for both your dog or other owners; more Pitbulls here than I’ve seen at most dog parks.
Not a terrible place but it’s not on our favorites list.

This is a very lovely dog park! Simone can escape the JM dog park so I will take her here now. Very large, nice weather, and I see a lot of people focused and playing and talking with their dogs.
The sand feels good on my dogs feet, I can tell by how fast she runs and her happy smile. I did not think she would like the sand so much but she did!
There are trees and shrubs and lots for a smaller sized puppy to do and explore!
I do not see any dog bullies. Simone loves when bigger dogs show interest in her by chasing her or playing with her.
People in Alameda seem to be hyper sensitive — esp when it comes to dogs barking. I have cried because people say such mean things to Simone. Luckily, no one like that was in the park today — come on people… dogs love to bark and play and jump!

Basically, I’m here to speak about the irresponsible owners which reflect through the behavior of their dogs that attend this park on a regular basis.
I’ve been going to this park for a year now, when I’m too lazy to make the drive to Point Isabel. When I first moved here, I noticed many reviews complaining about their dogs being bullied and owners getting into fights. I barley contribute to the Unilocal Community so I usually assume negative comments on Unilocal are usually coming from unhappy people with nothing better to do… but the previous negative complaints were spot on. I witness dog fights here maybe once every couple of visits. I also see the owners get into it equally as often. There are just a bunch of bad owners/​dogs that go here regularly, and it’s usually the same dogs and people. I’ve already familiarized myself with a couple different ones, and I leave as soon as I see them show up.
After a recent fight that involved the police, I visited this dog park for the last time.
I think the owners that go to Point Isabel are on a whole different level of maturity. Owners that can trust their dog in that huge open park with no fences more than likely have trained and obedient dogs. The Alameda dog park is fenced in making it easy for people who can’t control their dogs.
It’s sad — Alameda is full of great neighbors and people everywhere, but I’m not sure where all these disgruntled and ignorant owners at the dog park come from.
If you are new to the area or looking for a new park, I highly recommend you check out Point Isabel.

I have mixed feelings about this place.
Likes:
large, windy since its close to the water, busy at times, has parking lot.
dislikes:
my dog has bullied a few times here and the owner did not take responsibility of their dog’s behavior.
when it rains, the sand part becomes muddy.
no doggy bags but scoop stuff instead. People do not pick up their dogs’ crap.
Twice I had observed dog owners yell and scream at each other… too much drama.

To be simply blunt, this place is awesome! If you are a dog.
What is more exciting for a dog then being with a bunch of other dogs that have been dying for the weekend to come so that they can play with each other?!
However, it may be a tiny bit boring for you because you’ll be sitting/​standing and watching for however long you want your dog to enjoy themselves for. There is plenty of parking and an awesome park (tennis, bball, softball field, swings, lake, beach view) next to it if you want to go on a stroll, but make sure your dog doesn’t go crazy!
5 stars for if you’re a dog, 4 stars for the normal person because of the surrounding park!
