Meh. I’ve experienced better is the correct way to explain Dr. Chen.
Positives: Her office has a good front end staff and is high tech with the ipad check-​in and payment system.
In other news: She is an Iolani graduate, and well educated as a MD. I must say she is completely book smart but lacks tact and any trust or compassion for her patients. Being an brilliant doctor but lacking bedside manner and social skills to connect with patients is difficult in such a customer orientated-​driven business. For example, because her own office records were not updated for whatever reason, she did not trust my word that I went to my Fetal Diagnostics appointment, she questioned both my partner and I, and kept implying that we were lying to her. This is my first time being pregnant, and we are honest people… I would have told her the truth if I didn’t go. After the 3^rd degree, she then left the office and called the Fetal Diagnostics office to check if I went. When we later called to her office for the end consultation, she knew she was wrong because we could overhear her conversation over the phone from where we were waiting, she did not apologize to us and just glossed over the situation.
Watch your insurance statements because her office doesn’t give a break down of your co-​pay: She was charging my HMSA insurance and collecting from me $ 40 co-​pay per visit because she insisted on «unnecessary» scans for my pregnancy. She, nor the office staff could explain this, I had to find it out myself via my insurance company… if she was to just do the regular: monitor heartbeat, measure, check sugar levels, down there check-​ups, etc. the co-​pay would be $ 15 or covered. I only say «unnecessary» because I am not a high-​risk pregnancy, I did not need to be scanned every time I went in. That was why she was sending me to the Fetal Diagnostic center in the first place was to get scanned by the professionals there.
Lastly, I also asked her if she could send me her written records regarding my pregnancy progress and on two occasions she said that she would do so, but never did. During the middle of my pregnancy (though it was stressful to find another OBGYN), I have since left her care and am glad that I did.

I can’t even give her a star rating that’s how bad she was but because it’s required
I went into her office being that I didn’t have time to change the obgyn having confirmed my pregnancy at a clinic she began to make as much as if the clinic workers was beneath her. She told me just cause confirmed it doesn’t mean I’m going to believe .
So I pee’d in a cup and it was confirmed. She than asked me to remove my bottoms as she would like to examine to how far along I am with an ultrasound. My boyfriend ran to the car to get our money to pay for the visit. He asked the receptionist if he could be in the room to see the baby too. The receptionist said no! I asked dr Chen if he could come in and see the baby she said it wouldn’t make sense cause we were almost done. I practically had to beg for an ultrasound picture for him to see. The she looked at me and said get dressed and be in my office waiting .
Trying to keep an open mind cause my first visit was similar to this one and I hated it. She proceeded to talk about the pregnancy
She than asked me about the birth control I asked for insisting I told the company I didn’t need it cause I was pregnant. This was supposedly in the beginning of August. She had the nerve to ask me if I had memory problems ! Cause they wrote a note that I informed them I was pregnant Oh how bad I wanted to reach over that desk. But holding back I explained no one called. Than I told her I got pregnant the end of August not the beginning. And she was shocked
Than similar to another Unilocal review she told me I had bacterial vaginosis and that she’s gonna prescribe me a gel. My mom went to pick that gel up and asked if it was safe for my baby the pharmacist told her no the preferred treatment when pregnant is the pill form I never picked up the meds
Today I sit In the ER because she told me to eat what I can keep down which is sweets and this doctor tells me no treatment is the best treatment in the first trimester It’s to harmful for the baby. Also that sweets dehydrate the body thats nurturing the baby causing the mother to fill sick
Overall I wouldn’t recommend her to anyone not will I return to her for treatment.

I AM NOT SURE, WHY IN THE WORLD, I HAVE TO FEEL SOOO SCARED TO SEE MY OWN OBGYN. CHEN WILL MAKE U FEEL LIKE A CHILD, SHE WILL scold you if you did not do something, asked to repeat the answer, etc. Just talking about her gives me the cringe. I’m in the process of getting a procedure done, so can’t really change doctor at the moment, but seriously, im scared to death to seee her again. She looks as though she is in her mid 30’s… but treat u like ur her daughter and talk down at you. Her mood swing shift from one minute and next. I can’t imagine how those girls at the front desk work for her, they seemed scared to death of her. She definately trained those girls at front well, since i can tell by the sound of their voice is so low, they act like puppy, thats been beat, and scared to do, or look at you wrong, thinking, will be beaten again… I can feel that awkward vibe… go check her out, try her once, twice, third… u’ll know exactly what I mean… I have never met anyone like her in my life… I wonder if she’s happy? Or likes her job at all? Definately feel sorry for her. Since she is too young to be so bitchy and miserable…

Dr. Rosemarie Chang was the best Doctor and I’m so sad that she has retired. Dr. Hong Ru Chen and Dr. Karimoto took over her practice. I had made my first appointment with Dr. Karimoto she is a great doctor too and very caring for her patients unfortunately she left the practice. Dr. Hong Ru Chen took over my care. I made one appointment with her and NEVER AGAIN will I go back! She’s very RUDE and has no care towards her patients. She was in such a hurry and did not really take the time that she should have to see me. WORST OBGYN EVER!!!

Dr Chen is a horrible doctor. Initially when I started seeing her two years ago I thought she was awesome, very caring and thorough when explaining things to me.
Recently I have gone through personal and very life changing problems and doctor Chen knew about it for reasons I don’t wish to explain. She had no care what so ever about my well being and was so rude to me because I was 8 minutes late. Late to check in time, not appointment time so technically I was 3 minutes late.
Dr Chen had prescribed a medication for me and did not explain how to take the medication so I had called her after I picked it up via physicians exchange. She called me back immediately which was good but man was she super rude and made me feel stupid when I asked her about the dosage that she forgot to explain to me earlier, and there was no exploration on the bottle (targets fault or dr Chens fault? I don’t know) but bottom line, I was being cautious and decided to double check, for that I’m an idiot and deserved to be treated like one by DR CHEN
I was supposed to follow up two weeks after so I had an appointment to see her, however life happened and I CALLED TO RESCHEDULE a day prior. When I did make it to my rescheduled appointment, they charged me 50 dollars for missing the last appointment! I was furious! They brought me all the way there to tell me that doctor couldn’t see me unless I paid the outstanding balance along with the dues for that days appointment and they knew I needed to follow up and do blood work so they knew I would HAVE to pay! Then when I do get to see dr Chen she lectures me about missing an appointment and running late and that it messes up all her other patients who are on time! Seriously, it was twice and I had called to let them know I would be 3 minutes late or I gave 24 hr notice that I needed to reschedule. This lady is a trip!
She is so unprofessional and rude and very sarcastic. I’ve grown to despise this lady because she does not care about your feelings, health or well being! She is disgusting!
Recently I received a letter in the mail from her office saying they cannot have me as a patient anymore because I missed an appointment. Really? You cannot be serious!!! I paid for the appointment that i rescheduled whoops i mean in accordance to them it was a no call no show! I’m not too mad about not being a patient of this heartless woman anymore, but just furious at the way everything went down.
I do not recommend dr Chen for anyone! She’s a rude, selfish money hungry non caring health provider… Take it from me, don’t waste your time, go somewhere else!

I was shocked when I looked at the reviews for Dr. Chen’s practice to see all of the not so positive comments. I came to Dr. Chen’s office because my former OB retired and her practice was recommended.
I was actually seeing Dr. Karimoto who left the practice (for reasons I don’t know). I really liked Dr. Karimoto and was hesitant to move to Dr. Chen since I was about 5 months pregnant. My world was shaken at the time and I had my first pregnancy meltdown.
Dr. Chen is a great doctor and very knowledgeable. She is straightforward and doesn’t beat around the bush, something I appreciate. I know for my yearly checks I’m not there to socialize. Anyhow, Dr. Chen assured me I was in capable hands and left me feeling like I would be able to get through the rest of my pregnancy.
Throughout the last 4 months or so, I have gotten to know Dr. Chen. She is serious and has your health in her best interests. As a first time mom, I asked many questions and she was patient and understanding when she explained. I even had to call outside of normal hours because I got very sick and she called me back fairly quickly after her procedure and was able to give me care instructions over the phone.
During my delivery Dr. Chen was amazing! I was nervous and anxious and she came in with a calm but excited energy. This helped ease my nerves and she talked me through the whole thing. She is also pretty funny and I appreciated her humor that lightened the tension in the room.
All in all, while their office may not be the most up to date, Dr. Chen and her staff are amazing! Given the option to switch doctors now, I wouldn’t want to leave. Despite the negative reviews, I love the convenience of her practice being at two locations. They are a busy practice but they do their best to accommodate their patients. I have and will continue to recommend Dr. Chen to friends who need to find a new OB.

Several months after I began seeing Dr. Karimoto, I received a letter from this business/​Dr. Chen saying that Dr. Karimoto was leaving the practice. Dr. Chen seemed to imply in the letter that she was the head of the practice and that Dr. Karimoto was hired after her. I had been a client of Dr. Rosemarie Chang for over 15 years, and when Dr. Chang announced that she was retiring, she introduced her patients to the team of doctors that would be taking over her practice together, Dr. Karimoto and Dr. Chen. There was no indication that Dr. Chen was in anyway the primary doctor.
The way in which Dr. Chen handled this situation with Dr. Karimoto seems extremely unethical and left a very bad taste in my mouth. I refuse to go to Dr. Chen. Dr. Karimoto is an excellent doctor who cares deeply for her patients. The few times I talked to Dr. Chen on the phone for after hours emergency, I found her to be rude and not at all client-​centered like Dr. Karimoto is. Dr. Chen is one of those doctors who don’t seem to listen and only wants to talk. This island is small and word will get around. Very sad that this happened.

I saw Dr. Rosemarie Chang since I was in college 10 years ago until she retired about a year ago. Dr. Chang retired and turned her practice over to Dr. Hong Ru Chen and Dr. Maxine Karimoto. In August, we got these stupid letters in the mail indicating that Dr. Karimoto was tired and needed a break and is no longer with the practice, this sounded lame and fishy. Then we got letters again this past month saying that Dr. Karimoto requested this to be clarified and it seems like she was let go by Dr. Chen. It seems like Dr. Chen owns the business, although Dr. Chang had implied this was a shared business.
The one star review comes because I got a letter in the mail a few weeks ago saying that I will be terminated as of January because Dr. Chen will no longer will take Quest insurance. I have NEVER had quest insurance, for the 10 years I have seen Dr. Rosemarie Chang I have had a HMSA PPO plan NOT a Quest plan. I called Dr. Hong Ru Chen’s Aiea office numerous times and left messages to please return my call so I can clarify this. No one ever calls me back. I guess I’m terminated as of tomorrow. What kind of bookkeeping does this office do by sending me a letter saying I’m terminated for an insurance I never had??? and doesn’t return phone calls. This is not a doctor or office I would entrust my health with.
Dr. Chen also did not treat a relative’s biopsy with good bed side manners. She had the results of a relative’s biopsy but would not tell us over the phone. Dr. Chang would always call us with biopsy results. Dr. Hong Ru Chen makes us wait a week then we all come in for results thinking it will be bad because she refused to tell us results over the phone. We all take off from work to go to the appointment. Dr. Chen comes in the door and beats around the bush even after asking her what the results were. After 5 minutes of beating around the bush, she tells us the biopsy had no result, it missed the spot so she basically had no results. What??? She had to charge an appointment for this and have my family all take off from work to hear a «no result» response and refused to tell us this over the phone? Then beat around the bush and not say the result? She lacks bedside manners.
I think it was a blessing getting a letter in the mail a few weeks ago saying I’m terminated for an insurance I never had. I found a great doctor at Queens who I will continue with.
AVOID this office.

First timer. They told me come in by 130 to check in. (Which took less than 5 min) I was literally the first patient in and then 2 more came after. I noticed the 2 people that came after me went in right away before me. I kept my cool. Then I asked how long is the wait because my apt time was 145 and it was already 2pm, in an instant less than 1 min the nurse called my name. I went in nurse was really friendly. Then I noticed the time just going by… By 235 I just had it. … Waiting for a full ONE HOUR knowing you were the 1^st patient there… And no one letting me know as for courtesy they running behind? No whatever so ever «just to let you know she will right with you in 10−15» NOT «she will be right with you» and literally wait another full 60 min to get seen after checking in that took 5 min ! And checked in way before anyone else did .
Perks: an iPad upon check in, that’s all

Be careful!
I came to this doctor pregnant and in need of care. She saw me monthly until the day came when I tested positive for gestational diabetes. On that day, her office made me an appt with a diabetes educator and then left me a voicemail saying to call them direct to reschedule if needed. I ended up rescheduling it for 5 days later.
During that 5 days, a certified letter was sent to my house from Dr. Chen stating that because I missed my diabetes education class and i am a high risk, she can no longer treat me and that I must find another doctor. (Mind you, I am 6 months pregnant and without a doctor). No phone call asking if everything is ok or have I rescheduled the appt. Nothing! NO, Hawaii Obgyn does NOT Care. She dropped me just like that. I had kept every other appt. This was not a habit or anything that would justify being dropped. But when doctor’s allow the power to get ahead of the purpose they serve, things like this happen. What’s more is that she is NEW. Not a lot of experience to know bed side manners but I do expect a baseline knowledge of courtesy and respect. At the very least, Dr. Chen, consider leaving the patients you drop with recommendations of other doctors they can seek help from. It’s a horrible feeling to be dropped. It implied I was an irresponsible person, which I am not.
Remember this Dr. Chen, the people you pass on your way up, may just be the same ones you pass on your way down.
Until then, don’t be misled by this doctor. She cares more about herself than her patients. Sorry if this is rude but when you are a first time expectant mother, trying to do everything in the best interest of your unborn child, having a doctor who understands and cares means the world. I thought I found that with Dr. Chen but was wrong.
Thankfully I found a doctor who still cares about his patients. I’m so happy now with my new Doctor. I should have switched a long time ago.
